Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

Jesus at that 7.5 NWR review. I don't care that he scored the game low-ish, but the review itself is abysmally written.

The fact that they scored it the same as they score Coaster Crazy Deluxe says a little about them. The game clearly has high marks across the board of the actual professionals.

I think I "know my Mario Kart" and this is really the best one since MK DS and probably the most balanced. Too bad for the absence of any new interesting mode and the worst battle ever!

Anyway, it was fun while it lasted LOL

Good to hear since I am in the camp that Mario Kart DS is the best of the series. So refreshing to hear this after Mario Kart 7.

That's exactly what it's like. Also makes it hard for very young players who're getting to grips with the controls.

That's a real shame. Seems like battle mode is somewhat of a write off. Seems odd they'd do this. Different battle arenas have been there since the beginning. Big omission imo

That Simon Parkin review is on another level entirely. Beautifully written.

Also, I didn't even know Battle Mode was a main attraction for some people. Strikes me as similar to showing up for Spelunky for the deathmatch.
For people who like to play local battle mode is definitely a major draw. Playing local battle with my friends is some of the most fun I have playing games.
It's such a shame they did what they did as I was really looking forward to the battle mode this time around. Hopefully some arenas are patched in at some point.

now this is how you make a review legit lol you own the charts :)
Some reviewers are really badass online! André from Gamexplain is a beast!

I'm glad to hear this. Mario Kart DS is my favourite in the series but I also know it had certain balance issues (mostly due to the karts not all accommodating snaking). Mario Kart Wii had poor item balancing, but then Mario Kart 7 improved things quite a bit, so I'm glad to hear Mario Kart 8 is potentially even more balanced.
Mario Kart DS is my favorite too! This is basically MK 7 a lot more polished with better tracks, I can't even think wich one is the best one!

I was never the biggest battle mode fan before, but it seems I'm the only one who thinks it being on actual stages is a lot better than on separate arenas.

reminds me of wipeout's eliminator mode, which i like more than any mario kart battle mode.

lol at NWR being the party pooper. Not the first time it happened, either...but that's also one of the reasons I have respect for them

wasn't expecting EG's 10 tho. MK8 must be really bloody excellent if it managed to gain their attention

Might as well post this:

Come now, he said that Mario Kart 8 is a fun game, but not one without stern looks while it passes through.

Infinite cringe.

Huh. I suppose because Wii and Double Dash were so bad that I didn't realize this was still a main attraction for a subset. I agree that'd it be nice if they patched some in.

Wow. I'm not impressed at the scores themselves as much as I am the consistency. It's mostly ~9/10 across the board.

Not only that but pretty much everyone agrees on the game's weak point: Battle Mode. Though some have brought up the roster as well.

I think you really know what you're getting with this game and that's a good thing.

Mmm, a month's worth of games media players time trials to beat.

well it is good Nintendo will not reset everything for the retail launch of the game
it does not really matter how long these guys had to play ahead of you, you are going to get the time you were going to get anyway based on your own skills and work on improving that over the months you will spend with the game

I am just glad this game does not have the stupid checkpoint systems like Sonic Racing if I suck I can still unlock things in this game lol but in Sonic All-Stars I just got bored of trying to improve my performance and still missing checkpoints

racing a ghost is much more fun when it beats you than racing static checkpoints. So hopefully I will find MK8 motivates me to keep trying and not just give up like I did Sonic

You misundertand, I think. I like it because there are good player times to aim right from day one.

Oh then I think you can join friends from your Friends List in the Wii U OS.

Pretty damn sure that the join friends feature doesn't actually work on 3DS or Wii U.

Mario kart 8 doesn't alow us to invite friends to play.

Why do Nintendo for stupid things like This?

I am mad hyped for the game though.

was really that difficult to make 4 new maps for battle mode ?
add this to the pile of nintendo decisions that don't make any sense.

I don't want to keep bringing up DLC and patching but...

Since most sources agree that Battle Mode is flawed, and it's pretty obvious that BM is the result of time constraints, wouldn't it be in Nintendo's favor to continue working on this game and either patch in "walls" in the BM courses to close in players, or add BM-specific obstacles? And if we're talking DLC, they could flat-out provide actual arenas. Maybe a starter pack for free and paid packs later.

Wondering if they might add classic battle mode arenas via DLC.

I meant to post that GIF because no one else did... usually, it would come up when a lower score was posted in a high scoring review thread.

I'm honestly fine with the review itself (after reading it over a few times).

I'm being tongue-in-cheek. It reads as if it were written by a child.

got you, I don't think I'll have any chance to post good times against these guys but it will be fun to see where GAFFERs land on the charts

we might need a community ranking thread so we can stay motivated to beat top times

I've been able to join friends on Mario Kart7 from my Friends List no problem.

Surprised the reviews are so high, but happy to hear they're mostly pointing towards a balanced, well presented iteration of this franchise. Balance is a pretty big one for me, the skewered balance of Mario Kart Wii throwing me off that title. Reviews are a hard metric to judge balance as issues tend to require time and a larger player count before they're exposed, but early impressions have me optimistic.

Score fluctuations seem more to do with subjective elements, which is fair and just, as reviews are not a science. The gutting of the battle mode is a valid and heavy criticism if that's a component certain players have always found so appealing about the Mario Kart series. I've never really loved it, but there's no denying I've always associated battle mode with the series since Mario Kart 64. It's part of the franchise identity, and to see that damaged is a disappointment.

I can also appreciate criticism towards the roster, which stinks in my opinion, and has a value relative to how much you love baby characters and the Koopa Kids. Regressing Donkey Kong's representation is a bit confusing, as is the lack of Dry Bones, Dry Bowser, and so on. DLC could fix this. Not sure they'll bother.

Looking forward to playing the game for myself come end of the month.

non of the reviews i've read so far mention any about the gamepad uses
imo the reviews should have docked points for no gamepad uses
here is a game where they could have done gamepad multiplayer (2 players, 1 on tv 1 ov gamepad)

what a waste

Knowing how well some Dutchmen can write in English, this isn't an excuse.

It shouldn't be an excuse in the first place - write the review in your native language and translate it later with help if need be.

I don't want to seem like I'm shitting on this guy's review but some of it really does not make sense, even though he does have valid points for criticism.

The "not an evolution" or "not revolutionary" comments in reviews irks me, to be honest. It's a kart racing game, nobody's reinventing the wheel, here.

NWR's review does.

If this is true, then I agree. Has anyone used the gamepad for proper 2 player split screen yet? Fucking Nintendo…

Also, Gamepad rear view mirror. It was a no brainer and would have been awesome.

I'm not one to usually call out bad reviews because they are subjective, however:

NintendoWorldReview said:
Mario Kart 8 is a fun game, but not one without stern looks while it passes through. The game looks and plays beautifully, but the Grand Prix racing feels quite redundant. They are alright to do in multiplayer and there are some options for you in there. Either way, you will be done with them pretty quick as the unlocks are not really spread out. As a solo person, Time Trials and online will be the places where it will truly matter for you. These options are quite fine and seriously well put together to have a go with your mates. The decisions with the Balloon Battle are questionable though and the Wii U GamePad doesn't do much in terms of unique uses, which does make it feel more like a step downwards. While we could moan all day, it does matter to say that Mario Kart 8 is still a good game and sometimes that is all what matters.

This has got to be the most badly written review summary I have ever read. I actually had to read it twice. That last line, oh boy.

The option sounds nice, but in my case could be a disaster. Looking down at your rear view mirror while driving sounds like a dumb thing to do in a race.

Pikmin 3 multiplayer although fantastic in it's own right was a downer because of splitscreen.

This game too could have benifited from two screen multiplayer big time aswell, get on this Nintendo.

I dont have time to go through all the reviews, but what is the explanation for the less good reviews? Only "more of the same Nintendo never innovates [insert false statement here]", or do they actually have genuine issues with the game?

Mostly battle mode and occasionally the roster.

I wouldn't expect anything but solid reviews for this game.

89 on metacritic now, based on 33 reviews

Get your hype on! It's almost time!!!!!

I watched a couple review videos and I couldnt find an answer to this.

Does this have a split screen cooperativo mode? Mario GP.

This was my favorite mode with the SNES & N64 version and was absent im MK Wii.

What's wrong with the online?

From IGN's review

"Chat is restricted to lobbies with friends only. There’s no option to invite friends into a game, and Mario Kart 8 also doesn't provide message notifications. This is seriously disappointing because you have to use outside means to coordinate friends-only races."
