Mario Maker [Wii U] is real, folks.

This will be awesome.

Imagine the infinite possibilities, sharing levels online with people.

More importantly, it means the official death of the NEW series!

This is Nintendo catching up on a trend, sure. LBP was a hit (even if not commercially) and Minecraft even even a bigger one. But Nintendo has a very good franchise for this and even some history (seems that they are angling this to be the spiritual successor to 1992 Mario Paint).

Sometimes it's good that Nintendo follows what others do, and then mixes its own stuff with it. Don't have to reinvent the wheel every time.

Doubt this will be anything big, but it will probably be fun.

I think the saddest thing to take from this is that it's releasing in 2015. It's a Level Editor, not a new take on an IP, lol.

Was also sort of hoping for Super Mario World tilesets.
It's releasing in 2015, I think it's pretty safe to say it'll have more than just SMB/NSMBU. This is pretty early and more content is sure to come.

I wonder if they've been sitting on this awhile. Maybe waiting for the large touch screen to effectively do it with.

After demoing a few levels from the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii, we asked Miyamoto if he'd ever consider giving everyday players the tools to make their own Mario levels. "This is an area that I have a lot of interest in, and I think that the side-scrolling Mario games in particular are well suited to that idea," Miyamoto said (as translated by Bill Trinnen).

(Found that link in my own article from 2010 speculating on this very idea… I even mentioned a tool to illustrate jump arcs! But I wasn't that original otherwise.) 😉

Well I think they were interested in securing LBP and MediaMolecule too, circa 2007 or so... so, yeah, they have been wishing to get into this field for a while, I agree.

Hope that one day they do the same to Mario Kart, either as DLC component or as a standalone spin-off.

little bummed you cant swap between mario 1-3 and super styles... that would basically make it the greatest... i mean... being able to swap between 1 and nsmbu theres no reason that they couldnt do all the other styles... unless... oh god... DLC packs? noooooooooooooo!

I'm looking forward to some brutal fan levels for this. I hope the use the Pullblox/Pushmo system of having to beat a level before uploading it.

I feel like I should be more excited for this, when I noticed the NSMBU tab tucked behind the SMB one during the trailer my hype damn near exploded until I noticed you still seem to get left with the more barebones SMB selection just with NSMB assets instead of a toybox of NSMBU stage design elements and enemies.
Still early days I suppose, the range could expand further, consider me cautiously optimistic for this.

Seeing that Mario Paint-esque look.

I'll pay $5,000 for a new flyswatter min-game.

...okay, not really. Just $4,999.

Loved the concept of littlebigplanet but found it a bit complicated and hated the floaty controls. This look much, much simpler (just some things you can place on the level) and controls like, well, Mario, which is perfect.

The possibilities for this with dlc/sharing levels is amazing. Hope they run with it!

My main problem with the idea is SMB is not a very complex game. You are not going to be making that big of levels. Now if it was SMB3 for the Retro game, then I would be all up on it. If it is 15 bucks, I will still probably get it.

SMB 3 levels are tiny tho...

so...as someone not interested in editors, but truly in love with new mario u gameplay, would I be able to download tons of user generated levels for free? if so, I'd be in

I'm kind of surprised this (doesn't seem to be) for the 3DS as well. I hope they at least make a companion app of sorts for it that can let you play levels people made, but not be able to make your own.

Edit: And yeah I hope we get some SMW assets in it. Now and forever my favorite looking Mario game. I also hope they load it up with every single OST Mario track ever to use.

It looks pretty cool on the stream! I really like that they're taking a Mario Paint style approach to it with all these little touches.

It's being showcased on the Treehouse livestream right now. Jump tracer tool shows where Mario landed so you can design levels accordingly.

Looks pretty limited sadly. Levels don't look very big and it doesn't seem like you can change the level type (Outdoors, Castle, Water, etc)

Shame :(

I'm mostly excited that this is a spiritual successor to Mario Paint.

Hopefully they have a music section as well.

WarioWare DIY is way closer to a successor of that game. It's basically everything that Mario Paint was plus the ability to create small games.

This looks really great. I'm hoping that it won't be too limited to basic SMB1 stuff, or if it is at first, that there will be lots of iteration on the game and future content. I'd love to see SMB2, 3 and World stuff in this. I think this concept is super extensible and it would be a shame if they only release a basic version.

It's a Demo....

So who was the sneaky one who took the Mario Maker picture at the convention hall a few days ago?

I would honestly be very surprised if they didn't add more. It's still deep in development and what is there seems very functional, so I have to imagine they're working on variety of content at the moment.

Does anyone else wish that they would add the assets from Mario 2, Mario USA, Mario 3, and Mario World in this game?

I know I'm asking for a lot, but I just want to be able to make the most definitive Mario levels ever! I'd even pay for them as DLC!

If the only items you can place are the ones at the top of the screen then not interested.
Too limited.
I'd get bored after 15 minutes.

I can't create a sloping hill, or add P switches or anything.
It has to at least be as sophisticated as Mario 3 for me to care.

Nice idea, but undershot on execusion.
