Market size and trends in Spain?

Well, I live in Barcelona and I can give you my two cents.
The Spanish market is the least big of the European Markets. That's because it is also the one where piracy is bigger.
The main platfform is PS2 and in second place come the XBOX and the GC. Don't know which one has sold more here but I certainly know that they are very far away from the PS2.
As I already explained piracy takes a big role in the decision of purchase of a system. That's why PS2 sell so well. The cogswap is almost free and people know it.
XBOX owners also practice a lot of piracy. I think that more than a 50% of them have their system chipped.
Preferences in games are no surprise...
Casual gamers rule the market. So EA takes all the profit.
Nintendo also sells a lot and so certain franchises such as PES (A LOT), GTA, Gran Turismo...
The typical european market where Sony rules...Just that the piracy rates are MUCH higher.

GBA sells a lot I think. There is also a lot of piracy with people using flash carts but since GBA is mainly targeted to kids I think the degree of piracy cannot be compared to the PS2 one.
Dreamcast was killed by PS2 hype, just like everywhere. However there is a STRONG comunity even in those days.
That's the people that have pushed the emu, that still release games or that just do Partys to make an homage to the DC.
Dreamcast was very loved here by the hardcore gamers. It was the end of an era for a lot.
The proof that DC didn't do very well here is the fact that you can still find new DC games on big stores at ridiculous prices. That's the way I have completed my collection

The latest news I have is that they plan on creating some kind of recreational center just dedicated to videogames here in Barcelona (not just an arcade center). They want to call it the Videogame's Cathedral.
Other events I have news of are the classical PR events or the Playstation Experience.

Most spanish gamers have basic english reading skills but can't sustain a conversation, so subtitles are present in a lot of games with quality dubs becoming more popular. People like their games propperly translated and it shows, the lack of spanish voices in MGS2 caused quite an outrage among PS2 owners (the first one was a fine example of how to localize a game)

So it means that the localization is already made before the US version comes out and when you arrive in North America, the games are in english only, sometimes there is a spanish option and if you're lucky, a french one.
