I think one thing that make achievements stand out to me is the fact that they have potential to be really fun.
That Civ 5 achievement that was brought up earlier is a good example on how to make achievements interesting: Create situations that you normally wouldn't find yourself in, for instance.
If it's just dull "kill 1000 enemies" grinding, that's just boring. The same goes for achievements that require a massive stroke of luck in regards to RNG. For this game, it would be, say, requiring you to find a specific unique with a specific stat having a specific digit (idk, say Ghost Rider's slot 1 unique giving a +666 to health or something). Stuff like that is boring and uninteresting, as well.
