As much as I want to support Skullgirls, I can't touch it with that art style. Don't think I've ever seen one so off-putting. I may just buy the game to support Mike, but I doubt I'll play the game for longer than 20 minutes.
I think the animation is superb and a lot of the nuts and bolts, from gameplay to UI and beyond, sound very appealing. But... yeah.

Ultimately I'm just grateful that I don't have to buy it over the counter.

On the flip side, Ameriboos apparently love it because of the American art style.

Yep. And I'm saying this as guy who will probably have a lot of fun with the game.

I don't get why people are so bent on wondering "who is going to buy this game?" with Skull Girls. If you like it then buy it if the don't... then don't.

You know there ARE people who buy games based on just quality and solid word of mouth? If a game's genuinely good there is a market for it, aesthetics aside.

Same reason people like tier lists, it's fun to speculate on how well something will or won't do.

I think Skullgirls is a very powerful idea with a lot of mechanics that should become standards. The animation raises the bar and its got a lot of gameplay to enjoy. The only thing I think will hurt it is the idea of rocking an almost entirely female cast. It just won't stand out strongly enough in its characters to appeal broadly. A lot of folks initially buy a game because the cast looks cool. Their arent' really any cool guy marketed characters in the game yet to appeal to that crowd heavily. Folks will buy because its good, but its pretty limiting in terms of mass appeal when they don't cover their bases on making sure to market some of the cast to guys.

I hope I'm wrong and it rocks the market like Castle Crashers, but I'm really worried about this. Especially with how cool Ravidrath and his crew were to me with their advice and letting me experience their art tests to gauge my own work. I want this game to succeed pretty badly.

I haven't done this in like 30 years.

Amazon/eBay generation right here.

I just caught up on Assist Me videos... I'm kind of sold on Vergil now. Looks like I may be running Vergil/Zero/Nemesis day 1.
Yeah that video really sold me on him. His assists looked weak though. Since he's a meter hog, I think he will be relegated to second slot in most teams. Plus he has maximum orbs which looks great for DHC purposes.

And I'm buying Skullgirls just to support them. Whether or not I actually put time into it depends on the strength of the community playing it.

I'm thinking that it will do well for what they're expecting. I'm thinking that their bar isn't really too high since it's a niche market. And Mike Z SHOULD know because he comes from GG/BB background. The game mechanics has its quirks that some (maybe most?) people won't like. Still, custom assist is awesome.

His assists are actually pretty good and the best part is that they get super buffed in DT mode (bigger hit boxes and faster activation).

Rapid Slash is like a beam attack only it causes soft knockdown on hit which in UMVC3 is going to be a rare commodity. In the corner against in coming character it's a massive wave of slashes that you can't avoid and coupled with a teleport character it makes for some silly powerful mix ups. The soft knockdown pretty much guarantees that you will be able to combo off of it. The Judgment Cut is basically a quicker Dark hole only Vergil backs up when he does it so it's a bit safer overall. Rising Sun isn't particularly good but it causes enough hit stun that you can follow up after it in an anti air situation.

Vergil basically benefits other rushdown/teleport characters.

Oooh interesting. Well I think he's my #1 contender for new character pick. I mean I'll clearly give Pheonix Wright, Frank West and Rocket Raccoon some time just for fun player matches, but Vergil just looks "worth the work" to get good with him.

I also feel like XBL Ghostriders are going to be a major bane, so I really want someone with a teleport.

Yeah, after I made my post above I realized Zero/Vergil/Nemesis is a better order. Zero can build meter for Vergil.

BTW, do you guys think Vergil or Nemesis would be the better anchor?

Dahbomb said:

Zero likes the sound of that.

Edit: The more I think about it the better this team is sounding. With Vergil in the 2nd slot, both of my first 2 characters have supers that can power up their assists nicely. That'll give me a lot of nice DHC options.

Vergil can get a combo after his OTG with Nemesis's rocket bounce move. But Nemesis alone as anchor I am not really down with. I mean it's great for online play but it's not a long term strategy you should be banking on.

LOOKS LIKE I ACTIVATED MY LEVEL 3 IN THIS THREAD

:D

I can see nem working as a last guy BUT only if you got the instinct to pull off counter hit type crap

Yeah, this is just my starter team. One character I know and two I want to play around with. I'll branch out.

That piece with Hayato is freaking amazing. I get the mean outlaw star vibe from that one. When I look at all of those images and I compare them to the current dominant IP(and the ones they are producing) it makes me a bit sad.

I don't know if we'll ever see such unique characters and worlds again... ;_;

I can't get over the hyper muscular designs being pushed on us these days. I mean... I loved the shit out of DBZ, but it seems like I can't turn around without bumping into another bodybuilder with 2% bodyfat...

Skullgirls isn't the only thing that makes me feel like a teenager when I look at the stuff being sold to us.

Nov 5 - Canada Cup
Nov 11 - NorthWest Majors
Dec 3 - NorthEast Championship (first major to feature UMvC3)
Dec 17 - SoCal Regionals (first to feature AE2012)
March 2 - Final Round

These are the ones that has been scheduled so far..... there's also Winter Brawl and WestCoast Warzone but so far they are yet to be scheduled (as far as I know). There's a UMvC3 tourney scheduled for Nov 19 in Super Arcade which is guaranteed to feature the WNF crowd.... before that I have no idea if they are playing UMvC3 in WNF or Guard Crush, but yeah that will be the eariest you'll see high level UMvC3 action. Yipes's Curly Mustache tourney will probably occur again during that time too.
I have no idea if I acknowledged this earlier so I figured it would be nice to quote for anyone who missed it besides me. Thanks for looking it up.

I like the graphics in SF4.
Yeah the art style in SF4 is far superior to the one in Skullgirls.

Come to think of it, the art style in SF4 is one of the best in gaming period this entire gen.

It's pretty difficult for me to put my finger on why I don't like the look of Skullgirls, but one thing I do respect a lot is a focus on art style and the importance of that. I respect that to a degree I can't explain in words. Art makes/breaks games for me at times.

Yeah, I respect Skullgirls art in that I can appreciate that they put a lot of work into it. But I don't think it actually looks good.

So, Skullgirls gets a certificate of participation, I guess. Congratulations, you guys made a game.

So I need them to be even remotely good?
No. It's all a preference thing. There are plenty of people who do great in fighting games with regular old PS2 pads and the like.

However if you feel like you have a problem performing certain motions or doing other things on a regular controller, then I would totally recommend trying out an arcade stick. Don't buy thing thing thinking you are immediately going to become godlike and start pulling off crazy ass shit though. That takes practice, with or without an arcade stick.

Edit- Here are some well regarded sticks:

Madcatz TE stick - $149.99 I own one of the Round 2 models and I love it to pieces. Have had for more than year and have had absolutely zero problems with it. I love mine to pieces.

Madcatz SE stick - I'd recommend going to the local game stores by you for this one and see if you can find one for cheap. I know a dude who picked one up for 30 bucks during a sale at the mom and pops by his place. Warning: These have lower quality parts than the TE and I've seen some people complain about how some of their buttons stop responding after a couple months of use.

Eightarc - $169.99

Dualmodded Eightarc(works on both PS3 and 360) - $184.99

Hori Real Arcade Pro.VX SA - $139.99

My friend highly recommends the Real Arcade Pro 3 if you can find it for a good price.

Qanba Q4RAF(works with both 360 and PS3) - $149.99

Man, I don't even really like the art style of Skullgirls and I'm WTFing at this. I know it's all subjective, but still... wtf.

It really depends on what you're more comfortable with, imo. You can be just as good on pad as you can on stick, but if you're not comfortable playing with a pad, a stick might be better for you.

Door2Dawn said:

Not at all. But personally, a TE is way more comfortable than an xbox pad. Dialing out combos using all my fingers is more comfortable than doing it all with a thumb and shoulder buttons. After getting some experience with the stick I think I can hit most inputs on it more consistently than on a pad. Also, say goodbye to those left thumb calluses from hours of d-pad inputs.

They are better in the long run if you want the absolute max out of your characters or if you play characters that require ridiculous amounts of execution.

I wouldn't recommend it unless you are very very serious about the game. There are also high level pad players at tournaments too.
