I'm still not understanding the Marvel vs. Fox issue.
Marvel SOLD the movie rights to Fox. The movies Fox made were successful.
Is Marvel upset because they won't sell them back? Shouldn't there be or have been a clause in the contract stating that: "Movie rights will revert back in 25 years regardless of the success or lack there of our intellectual property"?
I just DON'T understand.
Marvel, a company about to go bankrupt, made very bad deals with Sony and Fox for the cinematic rights to their characters to stay alive.
The successes of these films saved Marvel, and eventually allowed them to take risks on an Iron Man film, produced by the newly formed Marvel Studios.
The Marvel Studios line of films became wildly successful, propelling Marvel's B, C, and even D list characters to popularity levels that rival Spider-Man worldwild.
Disney purchased Marvel.
Disney wants the film rights to their characters back from Fox and Sony, but the old bad deals are still in play. In fact, these deals are so bad that they last forever so long as Fox and Sony make and release a film every so-many years that meets some unknown set of quality or performance guidelines.
Disney decided to try to devalue the Fox held IPs in order to get their character's film rights back. They struck a 'sharing' deal with Sony for Spider-Man.
This should be pretty easy to understand after reading the above. There is more to it, but this is the basic story of why this is happening.
Fox's Fantastic Four films have been terrible, and X-Men stuff was a little rocky for a time but is performing very well again, and the mega-hits Deadpool and Logan pretty much ensure those characters are not coming back to Disney for film anytime soon, if ever.
