Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite Characters and Stages Roster |DT2| oh dear...

I still feel like the biggest element of curiosity for me is the Monster Hunter character, not just because I'm a huge MH fan but I also have no clue how they would even work. There's just too much to work with, and it all goes in different directions.

What are his neutrals based around? Probably the Greatsword or Sword and Shield, but that's like saying he can be anything from a moderately balanced to heavy bruiser character.

And what about specials and supers? Will he focus on showing off different weapon types being a "weapon master" of sorts? If so, would he use them as specials or have maybe 2/3 different stances? Will his playstyle instead focus on utilizing traps and tools? Will he have a Felyne partner, or summon monsters?

The Monster Hunter could be damn near anything from a gameplay and aesthetic standpoint. You could easily make 3-4 different Hunters with no crossover in function. That's a pretty rare opportunity for the developers in terms of freedom, but it also makes it impossible to know what to expect even with the character having been leaked.

what if Monster Hunter is just a Taskmaster re-skin, since you use bows and swords and shit in MH afterall...

What I always wanted for the Hunter, in a theoretical hyper fighting game or Smash, would be if they could switch styles between having their weapon out, and having their weapon put away. With the weapon out, it would more or less be their standard move set from the game, and generally be a strong but slow fighter if they went with something like the Greatsword. With the weapon put away though, they would have a more light hearted moveset where they could set up traps, use barrel bombs, attack with the pick axe, maybe have a felyne assists, use items, and other various attacks. While the hunter would have a more tricky style than when he has the weapon out, he would also gain better mobility, maybe with a dive that can pass through people.

I'm a few pages late but man Super Skrull in this game would be so sick.

He was my favourite character in UMVC3. Meteor smash into Inferno was one of the best looking things in that game.

Meteor smash with the tag system will just be sublime.

Couple of Max and JChen tweets about how MvC2's initial reception was about as bad as MvCI's. Lots of familiar bells ringing. Lazy roster, worse graphics, casualized gameplay, etc.

Probably useful if you're either a zoner or your opponent lives on momentum.

MVC2 didn't exclude Doom and the X-Men sprites, had tons of characters, has the biggest roster by and far. It also had more new characters. MVCi has some very big problems. When it releases it'll be mostly a "sprite dump" with the smallest roster since MVC1, all while maliciously excluding Doom and the X-Men. Characters that could have easily been ported over. It's got all the negative aspects and none of the good ones going for it. Sprite dump, major legacy lost, and smallest start up roster. A story mode and basic 2017 features are not going to change that.

What do ya mean "easily"? Isn't there a whole legal/license issue with the X-Men and Doom?

It is also the first 2v2 marvel since part 1 so the need to have 40 characters at launch isn't the same. Besides, if it ends up how it's looking like it will, it'll only be short 4-6 characters from vanilla mvc3. I don't see the issue with that. And have you played mvc2 with the entire cast? Half those characters were "useless"

Nope. Legal had nothing to do with the ban. It was completely self imposed.

MVC3 is made up of new characters, systems, resources and nothing was ported over. It'll have had made 38 new characters vs 7 + 20ish ported over. MVC2 threw everything in possible with 7 or 8 new sprites on top of that.

I played MVC2 with the entire cast, everyone was playable before the tournament scene figured out who was and wasn't viable for top level tournament play.

I just realized that people criticized MvC3 for having too many X-Men characters and now people are criticizing MvCI for having not enough of them.

I think the thing there though is just how different the environments are compared to back then. Hell you can say that did hurt the game since we had to wait so long for MVC3 and if anything back in the day MVC2 became more of a cult game on consoles (Which was why the PS2 and Xbox versions slowly kept rising in price as the game started gaining a cult like following).

I definitely wouldn't want the same for MVC:I. IMO the closest comparison will be SFV. Hopefully the fact that it isn't exclusive and there is a supposed day 1 patch can eliminate a decent amount of things. Since they at least have the content over SFV at launch it seems.

As somebody who its really into the .vs capcom series of games, i want to give my complete opinion on this game, since we are really close to get almost all the info. related about how the game will finally end up looking, playing, and overall feeling.

This series have a significant feeling for me, and i dont really know why. I have been a fan of Marvel Comics all my life, reading almost all regular-series since 2000. Im also a big fan of capcom fighting games (and mortal kombat series), so you can do the math. For some reason i don't buy consoles at launch, but i always finishing buying one, and everytime, a capcom .vs games its part of the reason. I bought a Dreamcast almost for all Capcom catalogue of games (mostly Cannon Spike and Marvel .vs Capcom 2), i bought a Wii mostly because Tatsunoko .vs Capcom, and i bought a PS3 only AFTER MVC3 was announced. Hell, i want a PS4 only because of this game and Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy

What im trying to say with this is that i really love the series, i think it has a legacy to live for, both as a concept and for the fans. So it hurts to me seeing that MVC has (and you are free to say otherwise) become a reality only to do as part of a merchandise concept for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

People believe that the ones we aren't happy with this product its because of the character roster of the way he looks. And in part is true. MVC its a series based mostly in the fact that we can see OUR favorites characters from both companies beating the crap out of each other, and since its a capcom game, they had to do it with amazing gameplay mechanics. It always has been like that.

MVC:I feels, to me, like a product that still need to polish. Still need to improve. And im doing free for the game, because two months ago it looked way worse to me.
Its about everything.

* About the graphics: the game had good graphics! but its the art style that it feels that its not following any direction. I remember somebody saying that MVC1 was the way how capcom and japanese saw marvel characters, and UMVC3 was how western people saw Capcom characters. This game, as far as i can say, feels like is trying to appeal to a group of persons that i'm not part of. Its look different, not exactly bad. But i don't like the colors, i don't like how sometimes looks too much darker, and in other times looks to bright. It doesn't feel consistent. You guys remember how TVC looked while playing in Orbital Gate stage? The characters looked only a little bit more darker, and most of the time they looked brighter because of the lights in the level. This game looks like Contest of Champions design, and i don't like that

* About gameplay: I have zero complains. At first i though that using 2v2 with no assist was an step back, but now i believe the game its going to be extremaly fun to play and watch at high level. My mind has changed in this aspect

* About sound: I have a complain here too, actually. I can't sense any hype for the music, or any details like that. You guys remember how MVC3 was really good about this? all the remixed themes from previous games (people was hype even about the I wanna take you for a ride song!), the menu music, even the music remix from the mission mode and galactus battle. Here feels worse. I do remember people saying that not having the characters main theme changing everytime the player changed characters in Tatsunoko was a bad decision, similar in MVC3. But here nobody says nothing (or maybe i haven't read enough).
I feel the same about the way punching sounds. It lacks...i don't know. Maybe its just me in here talking

*About characters: This is my most biggest complain. I felt offended when ComboFiend told everybody that in the end this is game about mechanics instead of characters...do any of you actually believe that? I certainly didn't. Lest just say we get a new Marvel .vs Capcom...but instead of capcom characters, we get those shitty Marvel Nemesis EA created...do you guys would be happy with that? Yeah, me neither. Im not trying to say that im mad because i ain't get the characters I LIKE...but instead we got almost the same characters of the previous games...but even LESS characters! This is way i say that this game need both more time of development. Because my only conclusion here is that its certainly feels like a product that exist mostly for the solo purpose to sell a game about MCU. We didn't got highly popular and legacy characters...and only few news. Whats the fun about that man? I think that what makes this series fun, for me at least, was the fact we goth crazy characters doing crazy things. Unique, surprising, crazy characters! I feel the same for Smash. Bros series...For me, 50% of MVC was just about that, about characters. To be totally honest, i was expecting crazy comebacks like Captain Commando, new ones like Asura, and outta nowhere adds like Jack Krauser from RE4 or something...It was fun to not being able to predict anything!

* About presentation: i feel this has gotten worse too. I had complained a lot about this previously, but this game feels like its being rush in this aspect. Cover art feels flat, menu art looks boring, and we got almost nothing of original art outside of variant covers and some art from Shinkiro the other day (that i believe was also a variant cover). We are talking about a MARVEL .VS CAPCOM GAME here. You can pick 3 artist from each company and every art they do probably gonna do miracles to this game. Put the characters in a way that this game SELLS the feel of every character actually fighting against themselves...Yeah its about ultron-sigma and shit, but who the fuck cares.

There's other little details that for me make this game feels like i need to be more time in development. It doesn't feel really like a product of both companies putting they resources and imagination to create something that collide in themselves...Like Ryu saying he hates spiders against Spider-man...Characters endings, introductions...and a lot more of etc.

Yeah maybe its me here. I do feel the game its going to be good in gameplay aspect. But everything else feels like a step down...

I just realized that people criticized MvC3 for having too many X-Men characters and now people are criticizing MvCI for having not enough of them.

I don't think that's even remotely true since it's well balanced. I don't even remember any complaints about too many X-Men. I guess it's in case for certain communities.

Honestly, the game has issues, but as soon as it has more than one people magnify and multiply the importance of each one. Then when shit like appearance improves and Capcom announces a day 1 patch for the things people are complaining about, everything else is still at a deal breaker state.

Imagine if people went at Souls games' UI the way they did for fighting games. In those, it's often ugly but semi-clear. At least the UI in this game is pretty clear, and less all over the place as it was in UMvC3. Instead of being a cherry on top kind of thing, the way the character select screen looks is a major factor in the presentation of the game. Don't get me wrong, it contributes to the overall impression of the game, but even preview after preview of the game being fun as hell hasn't made people care, and I think it's absurd to say the game looks outright bad but you can't really fight internet hyperbole. People pick a polarizing view and stick to it unless [insert unreasonable expectations for development at this time here]. I think it was Karst here who once said people don't argue on the internet for the sake of discussing, it's to defend their rigid position as best they can.

It's not indifferent from SFV in that regard. People really didn't care. It's all about things tangentially related to the game, like getting "back" at Capcom, and that Polygon article just re-woke those emotions while lying/being ignorant of already revealed details about the game. It's not just that Capcom is making mistakes (and yes, this does stem from Capcom), the whole chain of communication has been a shit show, resulting in warranted and unwarranted backlash. I mean just look at that SFV thread where people didn't know you could easily earn enough money to buy a season's worth of characters. Like what? That was a big part of Capcom PR and reporting on the game. But people read a headline, took a stance, stopped thinking critically, and put themselves into blind rage mode.

5 X-Men out of 18 Marvel definitely isn't too much, though Sentinel should've been swapped for a better character like Cyclops, Colossus, or for new styles, Magik or Nightcrawler.

It's completely understandable that some are disappointed with the exclusion of the fox movie characters but anyone who follows disney/marvel news saw this coming.

Thankfully the returning cast all seem to have new gameplay additions to make them more viable in this updated system. Yes there are only 7 all new characters (Thanos is a new character as this is his first 3d model and all of his kit is new.)but all of them look at least entertaining. The entire first season dlc pass will include 6 more new characters including panther who I was hoping would be on the base roster. Yes no x men and doom sucks but the 2 v 2 format has me struggling to find a main team the only lock for me is thanos as he has always been my favorite comic character.

Hopefully season passes will be themed and we get an xmen vs street fighter pass. (Wolverine, psylocke, magik, archangel, rashid, urien,m bison, laura) Until then I am actually pretty happy with the overall roster. I feel like most of the complaints have been addressed or will be as Capcom stated there will be a day 1 graphics patch and even without it the nemesis build looks much better than previous builds of the game. Music is nice loving the new aimbrella stage theme and a few others stand out as well.

Gameplay looks absolutely amazing. Held on to my collectors edition. .. fuck it give me my infinity stones.

Agreed, my gripe is the character select screen and the UI. Just fix up the presentation.

Gambit was one of the most wanted characters back then. People wanted more X-men

The only complaint I recall was about Sentinel's inclusion. The idea was that you shouldn't cater to tournament players since they only represent a small fraction of the people who buy fighting games.

Kind of amazing how that ended up flipping regarding SFV's release.

People wanted more of everything because UMVC3 had almost every requested character...minus Captain Commando and Asura.

People wanted Gambit, Omega Red, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Silver Samurai, Cyclops
Then people wanted comics characters, Silver Surfer, Captain Marvel, Star-Lord, Thanos, Black Bolt
Then people wanted more earthling heroes. Daredevil, Luke Cage, Miss Marvel, Black Phanter, Nick Fury
Then people wanted more villains. Ultron, Thanos, Kang the Conqueror, Doc Ock.

People wanted everybody because they feel like they could get everybody

Yeah, I remember many people were crying out for Cyclops, Psylocke and Gambit which already contradicted with what he just said. I'm personally not fan of Sentinel being in the game but I ended up having him in my team tho.

I thought most people complained about Sentinel since it wasn't actually a character. I think I remember seeing a lot of people being fine if it turned out t be Bastion or Ultron or something that was an individual.

Sentinel is literally the one MvC3 character I wouldn't care to see come back. He's not even a real Marvel character. I was a little upset when I read that Juggernaut almost made the cut over him and that Seth Killian pushed really hard for Sentinel.

I kind of like the UI, to be honest. It's better than UMvC3 for sure and more interesting to look at than Street Fighter V. Alerts show up where the thing they're warning about happens and the big bold colors on the life bar makes it easy to glance at. Even the big bold text on using an Infinity Storm is nice. No need to remember what does what from colors alone, there's always a secondary information.

That's honestly one of the best things of this UI. Like how the announcer yells out everything. Most notable the snappy "Counter!" That's useful to have a secondary notification of that in a game as prone to visual overload as a Marvel vs. Capcom game. The announcer is actually useful in this game. That and your partner calling out when you're in trouble and should tag out. Again, secondary information that's already shown visually, now told in audio.

To use a word that is slightly taboo around here, the UI is extremely functional. You always know exactly what you need to know. At no point is the game state or available options in doubt. Honestly, the only things I'd change would be to add a halfway maker on the life gauge and maybe make the Hyper gauge a little more visible. Or at least highlight that a Counter-tag is available when you have 2 and a big Hyper can be done at 3. Like how the super meter in Street Fighter IV changes its label from "Combo" to "EX" to "Super!" as it fills. But those are nitpicks, the UI is pretty good from a functional point of view as is.

If they wanted to, Ultron could easily be played similar to Sentinel. But Sentinel its a legacy character, couldn't be cut IMHO.

Somewhat tangentially related to the topic at hand but last night Gwenpool was apparently confirmed for Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2, which is interesting cause that's another game that seems to be going under a X-Men/Fox ban as of present. While that is a character who's obviously not owned by Fox I was wondering whether Marvel would shy away from using a character with some explicit connotations to a character that is. It's possible she might be a DLC candidate for Infinite if that's the case. It'd be nice to get her or Kamala Khan - hell, any additional female rep.

I like Sentinel.

I was in the too many X-Men camp though during those times, coming off of the X-Men bias in Marvel 2, I wanted only the core X-Men as representatives (which is how it turned out in the final roster of 3 anyways, with Wolverine, Storm, Magneto, Phoenix, and Wackbot; I would've been good with Psylocke and Cyclops too, but any more and I'd probably have a complaint). There were several of us that argued this, I recall it clearly.

While the UI is definitely practical, it also has the problem of being very... there. Like it's intentionally trying to take up more space than it looks. Of all of the "mobile game" comparisons, that's the easiest one to see.

SFV also has a practical and readable UI, but the difference there is that it's very clean and compact. It takes up no more space than it absolutely has to, and it ditches the curved aesthetic that made SFIV's harder to read.

Though I'll admit that MvCI's UI is probably better than UMvC3's. As cool as that one looks, it has problems. Why do the assists not align with your button placement? Why is your X-Factor time depicted by a meter no more than a few pixels tall? Why is it impossible to tell your assist moves from a quick glance?

Gwenpool was made to take Deadpool's place in marketing as well as capitalize on Spider-Gwen's success. Seeing as how Marvel has ended the X-ban, though, I doubt we'll ever see her in this game, since Deadpool probably isn't too far out.

If Deadpool's coming as DLC (& I'm pretty sure he will), there's really no need to add Gwenpool to MvCI. It's fine for Lego Marvel 2 because TT basically adds everyone they can.

How many gaming shows/conventions are there left before the game's launch? Gamescon Paris games week and what else that they can potentially show more characters?

I like Gwenpool, but what I'd like to see is when we inevitably get Deadpool as DLC, I want him to have a Gwenpool alt. color, and upon selecting this color, he yells out "GWENPOOL!" and refers to himself as Gwenpool throughout the match.

If he doesn't make a gender joke in that skin I'll be disappointed.

Wolverine: Wade, is this another one of your... phases?
Dead/Gwenpool: It's 2017, Logan. I can be whatever I want to be now.

UMvC3 is really a masterclass in bad UI choices. You have this tide-turning special ability which is dominating the design with a huge X, but when you trigger it, the remaining time is for some reason not shown in that X, but instead along the life gauges. Like... what? The character order is also confusing. If my current character is KO'd, which one jumps in? The one close to the main life bar or the the one close to the main life bar? Vanilla MvC3's UI was so much better than Ultimate's.

I suppose one could argue that Capcom overcompensated from stylish but unclear to utilitarian, but efficient here. But I'd honestly prefer the latter extreme of those two. Let the characters do the fancy effects and have the UI stay simple.

I would prefer X-Men come back and all be newcomers except for Wolverine. He's been in every game and is the Ryu equivalent of this franchise. It feels wrong, it feels political, and affront to the fan service that the franchise is built upon.

X-Men generally have some of the coolest power sets of any Marvel sub franchise, so I'm totally down with Maneto or Storm or Gambit coming back, but there's so much else out there.

Also I hope they're more aggressive than SFV with alt costumes in post-launch support, MvC:I as a platform for MvC content is pretty much what I've wanted since MvC3. It'd be nice if one free costume was unlocked via the gallery mode, but I doubt it. Gallery Mode should be a combination of Secret Factor and Smash's challenge mode.

For the record if they did include Gwenpool she'd be wildly different from Deadpool, so I wouldn't say either inclusion invalidates the other, much like how Wolverine didn't invalidate X-23. Her move set would likely be a mixture of B.B. Hood and Phoenix Wright. Despite having a massive arsenal of weapons she has no combat experience what-so-ever. It'd be nice to have her in terms of a Marvel gag character since usually those characters are on the Capcom side.

Speaking of usability, I do find it odd as much as they want to cater to beginners for MvC:I that they went back to the MvC2 input scheme with
LP HP
LK HP

I found when I was a beginner that BlazBlue/MvC3 button layouts were easier for me to grasp.

Yeah, I still can't stand the new layout. I also find DP inputs much easier to use in combos than down, down. MvC3 did it right by reserving that command for things like Mighty Speech and Chris' crawl stance.

Even as someone who's mediocre at fighting games, MvC3 still feels really easy and intuitive for me to control. Doing even basic combos in the MvCI demo feels like I'm operating an airplane.

I mostly agree with you, but I feel like Storm and Mags should come with the package.

Otherwise; Nightcrawler, Emma Frost, Mr. Sinister, Arch/angel (After seeing Vulture in Homecoming, I've turned around on winged characters who can 'just fly'), Apocalypse, Kitty Pryde, Bishop, Mystique, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Beast, etc have incredible potential. I really liked Mr. Sinister as a young'n. Would be great if he summoned effed up clones of the X-Men and other crazy genetic monstrosities as part of his moveset.

So you don't want Deadpool to return?

Yeah, I still can't stand the new layout. I also find DP inputs much easier to use in combos than down, down. MvC3 did it right by reserving that command for things like Mighty Speech and Chris' crawl stance.

Even as someone who's mediocre at fighting games, MvC3 still feels really easy and intuitive for me to control. Doing even basic combos in the MvCI demo feels like I'm operating an airplane.

Yeah going back to the MvC2 control scheme is gonna be hard to get used to. MvC3's control scheme was weird at first too but it quickly clicked and it's much easier to do aerial combos. I'm still dropping shit left and right in MvCI.
