I'm in that same boat.

I hope your household manages to dodge this thing. And to your other point, I've been saying the same to my coworkers. Regardless of what the fatality rate is, this is a new thing. Everyone it kills is someone that previously didn't have to die. 1 person or a million, its needless.

And those saying it's not a big deal, I get it, but for those of us with loved ones with chronic illnesses, we're starting to worry....

My wife's only 35 😳

I'm the same age as your wife.

Though oddly, one of the things I've read is that it's also bad for people with OVERactive immune systems, because it causes cytokine storms which makes your lungs get all fucked up. And that's usually in younger people, which is one of the main causes of deaths in younger patients.

I'm not going anywhere unless I have to, I do a ton of online shopping anyway. Problem is people are carriers before displaying symptoms, so it's not just about avoiding coughing people. And also I have doctors visits on the horizon, though luckily most of them are not super crowded, and they're specialists.

Good thing I have Psoriasis (autoimunity disease) cured with immunosuppressants and different immunosuppressants for dealing with my liver transplant. I am truly on the top of the game.

Same. One thing I'm concerned about is I help take care of my nephew for my sister when she's out. Well she takes public transportation to work everyday. Not sure if I should tell her to find a sitter for him(who could also be at risk as being a carrier as well) and also if my sister picks something up from public transportation but isn't yet symptomatic and I come into contact with her.

I mean I guess we have to live our lives to some degree. All the experts say this could last at least 6 months. You can't lock yourself in your house by yourself for that long, it's too much. I don't have any concerts or sporting events I'm scheduled to go to, but I have doctors visits upcoming.

One of the things that pisses me off. When people only look at the mortality rate and not the totals. 4,000 deaths is 4,000 loved ones lost. That's a lot of people. I don't care about the fucking percentage.

If some psycho walked around a city with a machine gun tomorrow and murdered 4,000 people, we wouldn't be talking percentages. We would be mourning the deaths of people. Even if most of them were elderly.

I feel to mentally cope and partial denial, we try to distance ourselves from panic and tragedy by painting everything in terms of percentages. All until someone you know or care about dies. Then it becomes real.

the economic crisis the overhyping is causing certainly leads to more than 4,000 deaths.

We're trying to just buy everything online too. However I took my wife to an appointment this morning with her pain management dr. None of the staff were wearing masks and it's in a medical complex with other medical patients. Some of the patients in that waiting room were wearing masks and coughing 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Masks and purell are sold out everywhere. I'm just fine using soap and water. Masks probably won't do much, but I have some stockpiled from months back when I was doing some deep cleaning.

The problem with panicking is overloading the system and infecting the vulnerable. If you are under 40 you will get sick and recover and rarely need hospilization.

But if everyone with a cold goes to the hospital now ure overloading it and bringing the infection to cluster of old and infrim people causing further stress.

As far as schools the bigger danger is to the staff and teachers and not the kids. If you have kids the bigger problem is them infecting a bunch of old people since kids are naturally less likely to be careful and sanitary.

Puts it all in perspective:

What does this put into perspective? Every generation brings greater advances in medicine. The differences between now and then are like putting a band-aid on someone's chest and a heart transplant. Just because 50 million people died then doesn't make any of the deaths now less important.

Went to the grocery store near me and noticed all the TP and paper towels were gone. Shelves were empty.

Come dufuq on people. Stpp being so paranoid. Lol.

Edit: and no I wasn't there for TP. Already got a bunch from Amazon awhile back. I have to keep stocked up anyways being I have IBS.

All of the UC schools in SoCal just closed until April 3rd for no reason other than people are panicked. There are no cases near any of the schools.

I was told by a fedex driver that 3 cases are at UCI. Not sure if he's pulling my leg, but we will see. He's not someone who would.

Unfortunately, the measures being taken are not going to stop the spread of this virus. Roughly 20-60% of us will get sick.

We can only delay the doubling by mere days. Washington State is headed towards Italy, and British Columbia is headed towards Washington.

In the next three months almost all of you are going to see what I’m seeing and experiencing right now at ground zero. Tell your elderly family members how much they’ve helped you in your life and tell them how much you love them. If you’re not good at that sort of thing FORCE YOURSELF to do it.

I hope that you and your loved ones get a ‘mild version’ of this. And I hope that many of you are much stronger people than I am. I’m struggling right now to be the man that my both Dad and my Uncle were. No hyperbole: this is the worst thing that has ever happened to me.

I am already doing it ! But they don’t want to except it ! I began right after I saw China , I did got them on a exercise regime ! Everyday for 2 months now, my mother has a bad heart and my father brain damage !

Hold in there man!

My family can’t comprehend that this is happening.
I even had a fall out with my girlfriend today about keeping our 3 year old boy home from pre-school. But I don’t want to wait on the government, by than I picked it up at his school.

I myself experienced stuff other people haven’t, so I am quite rational in these situations.

Hold on , take care, and keep hoping! It always helped me. And stand up for yourself !

Where are you located again? I'm sorry you're going through this.

What if this really does become an apocalyptic scale thing and what if this is why people have been acting so bizarre these last several years, like a collective unconscious thing where people could sense something bad was coming down the pike and it was making them go crazy?

I'm definitely starting to get a bit worried myself.

I live with 5 people over 60, and one almost 100. I heard a few sneezes here and there. My throat is not hurting but I feel something is coming
Sneezing isn't a symptom, it's upper respiratory, not a head cold. I'd pay attention to coughing, wheezing, fevers. If you have any of that, get tested. Might just be the flu, but right now it's kinda your civic duty to be tested to be safe if you get any of those symptoms.

I want to go potentially say goodbye to my grandmother, she's 95 and in a nursing home. She doesn't hear well anymore so I can't phone her. I am worried about going in there though and being infected. I'm close to Toronto and it hasn't blown up yet and I feel fine, but for all I know I already have it and I'll feel it 2 weeks from now. I don't know what to do.

I've been following this nonsense pretty closely since the beginning and today was the first day where I felt a distinct change in the story.. From almost everywhere, from a Western perspective.

It's as if today it finally hit home for everyone all at once. Kind of surreal. I am still hopeful it all blows over, but that is looking less and less likely.

Just going through the data by country:
China - seemingly contained after reaching 80K ish
Italy - 10K cases, doubling time of 2-3 days
Iran - 8K cases, seems to be tapering
South Korea - tapering at 8K
France/Spain/Germany/USA - sharp upward trajectory, but still early days

I don't know, too early for any real insights to be gained here.
The most useful data so far is out of the bad cases how many people recover.
I don't think we'll have good data until the testing is streamlined, we have a heat map of cases and can related them to population density, and we can model how many cases we are missing for asymptomatic or very mild infections that go uncounted.

The other big telling factor will be bad hospitalizations. We need to get some stats on how overloaded hospitals are getting and compare that with the seasonal flu. If hospitals can't keep with this shit you know it's bad.

Hmm, didn't the guy on Joe Rogan say the Spanish Flu only killed 3-3.2%?
The numbers are just estimates. Think the range of dead is anywhere from 15~20 million to like 100 million. For countries like the US, the mortality rate was probably closer to 3%.

Can she see the writing of a letter? That's the only thing you can do, a letter (sadly no flowers, they can be nasty carriers), unless they have something that can play media, then film yourself and possibly put big subtitles, then tell them to throw the card away as sending it back could be dangerous.
That's the only thing you can do unless you want to go full hazmat and take the risk to get in there, greet at her from distance and write messages on a portable board or something.

Take your temperature every 12 hours, make sure they take theirs. Use analog thermometers so you can clean it with alcohol every time you use it.

Wow. Word going around now that all sporting events in San Fran are going to disallow fans in attendance. This is quickly going to spread, I’m telling you,

Soon all NBA and NHL arenas are going to be empty. I’m guessing within the next 2 weeks this will be universal. And it’ll spread to baseball as well.

We gotta start flattening this curve, the rise is too great.
