Most folks are deficient in all three.
That aside, C and Zinc are water-soluble, so unless you can be assured you're getting enough through your diet, supplementation is the way to go.
There's enough evidence to suggest that dosing extra helps your immune system handle an increased workload (like when fighting off disease).
Not sure why you would say "they do nothing".

Type 1 error is a false positive: when you conclude the data proves your point but turns out it doesn't.
My statistic knowledge is quite basic so hopefully someone with a better understanding can look at it, but what I read there is with the data they had the risk of a type 1 error was too high and being more strict on age, bmi and asthma reduced the probability which means their results are that the effect is mostly seen in those that are below 16 years, have a normal bmi and do not have asthma.
In any case my intention was not to preach about vitamin use, but rather being worried that some people believe in them enough not to take precautionary measures. I'll edit my previous post.
