Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

Man, the cut scenes in the PS3 demo are something else... Between a stuttering frame rate, wonky animations, and characters that disappear and reappear during the middle of shots, this can't be intentional or what we should be expecting in the final version, right?

I hate how hard they want to make all games casual

It doesn't have any effect on the game's standard RPG mode, and it's clearly not an option that they poured any real resources into so there's not really any opportunity cost there, so I really don't see why it should bother anyone.

The action mode being the default mode (if im not mistaken) is telling...

It's the default option because it is solely in the game for people who will just press A until the game starts, not because it's the focus of the game lol

also need a source on the film grain being gone :(

Decent enough demo.

The start was pretty awful, and overall the cut-scenes and facial animations are janky as hell.

The latter mission was fun though.

Playing on PC, I found it really weird to constantly be in battle mode, felt... odd.

Considering that Action Mode is there for people who go "Ugghhhhh" when the game asks them to create a character and just keep hitting Continue until the game starts, that's really the only sensible way to do it.

Default bias is probably going to mean that there are a few more of those people in ME3 than previous games, but I think it's assumed that if you actually want to have control over the customization of your game, you're going to be the type who reads through all the options to find what you want.

I guess Bioware has a point with that. I mean, the most boring class (soldier+default male shepard) is also the most played, so there are certainly more people who want less fiddling around and more shooting. I don't mind that is there, I mind what it says about the audience and if there is a possibility it influenced the game design in other ways.

I think my main issue with the demo/game was the FOV during missions. Feels liking I'm looking through a small tube. Doesn't help that you can't holster your gun to zoom out and take a look at areas.

Yeah, this was a pretty big problem for me.

Hope so. I'm going through ME2 on it again as my last ps3 died and all those problems are in the cit scenes there too.

Action mode is the first mode listed because they are listed in alphabetical order. The only thing it is telling anyone is that A comes before R and S.

Won't know until next month. If it influenced the game design past my liking, this will probably be my last BioWare game, but to be completely honest I'm not really interested in supporting EA and I don't really like the direction BioWare as a company is going (I'm in the camp that they weren't tainted by EA, it's mainly their own doing)

My male Shep for the past2 games is basically Buzz Lightyear so those cliche lines are going to be so awesome. If only Tim Allen was voicing my Shepard.

Been lurking the official forum for a bit, and the only clear idea i got from the experience is that the community manager (Chris Priestly) is trolling the community by acting as a dick lol.

Lately bioware´s handling of their community, when compared to the awesomely communicative big huge game´s guys, leaves much to be desired.

When Mass Effect 1 was in development I asked him if they were going to put in rocket propelled flaming chainsaw launchers and he said yes. EvilChris indeed.

Just played the PS3 demo. Woo boy, does it suck for the most part. Janky animations. Everyone looks like plastic dolls. At one point I somehow got in front of Anderson at the first and he pushed me, sliding across the ground, running to where he was supposed to go.

About the only thing I liked was the Reaper attacks, the sounds and such. Really cool. Otherwise, wtf are they thinking?

Give him a break, he has the worst job in the world. I would rather clean toilets than have to be a moderator on that forum.

He can't really go over tactics and strategy in 1 minute while Reapers are destroying everything dude....

That little dialogue is just there for impact, not to be deep. Even the committee guy says "That's it? That's your plan!?"

That A) Doesn't even make sense, and B) Doesn't make it any less of a terrible piece of dialogue.

Not really a demo-related question, but does anyone know if there are difficulties available for story-mode? Like, if you put it on Insanity, and the combat is super easy, are you still unlocking achievements / etc? I kinda hope not, because although ME2 had some really annoying parts (Collector’s ship…) on Insanity, it was still a fun challenge. I know there’s the option to just put it on role-playing mode but I don’t even want to be tempted.

Don't! I posted there a couple of times but it is really a nefarious place to be and some people there are just insane. The CMs don't give a shit, will rarely if ever give you a straight answer, and are most often than not bigger trolls than the real users.

Can you blame them when you have to deal with creepy fans all day long?

I'm 99% convinced that the really creepy fans are the devs of the game letting off steam. Because there's no way half the shit I see there comes from legitimate users. And if it is... Well... God help us all.

That's what I'm saying. It is not a good place to engage in conversation if you are not one of those guys/gals. The fact that the first Mass Effect 3 related sub-forums they opened were: Mass Effect 3 General Discussion and Mass Effect 3 Romance Discussion says everything you need to know about that place. The mods are just enablers or censors.

You basically wrote a small wall of text just to dismiss all complaints as "lol bioware haters lol"

Whether it applies to anyone or not really doesn't change how awful it was.

I've had my fair share of complaints against things in the ME games (mostly in their official forums) to the point where I've been suspended before just for complaining so much.

I can say it right now. Yes the running animations are silly. Things like "We're in this together Anderson!" is the response for both choices is stupid. Skipping the trial is a horrible decision. And yet, these things really don't completely destroy the fun of the game like many others here make it seem like. That's what I meant by I'm so happy I'm the gamer I am, I don't let these things get to me. Maybe I'm too lenient, or just open minded.

You can call me a Bioware fanboy if you want, but I've definitely noticed the amount of scrutiny over insignificant issues applied to their games far exceed other games here, where the same issues for those games would mostly just be glossed over or not given as much attention.

And don't go asking me to bring proof. I'm not really keen on collecting a database of all of it, it's just what I've noticed for a while now. You can deny it all you want, but Bioware games now are games many people love to hate here. It's fun and gets a good laugh.

I think it's quite telling that in the multiplayer feedback thread over there that as soon as people started criticising the random unlocks system that the Bioware defenders immediately jumped on the train.

Apparently random unlocks are fun and prevent the experience from getting stale! I've got another word for it: shit.

I think people are just disappointed. Bioware were the guys that were held above everyone else in the industry, the amount of community credit they had was just insane.

Personally, they lost some of that credit with me for the stupidest most insignificant detail, call me crazy...the moment that i realized that they didn't even bother to change the "ui radar maps" in the reused DA2 zones (they just blocked doors or passages and left the map intact).

this coming from a company that delighted us with their attention to detail, just felt like a slap in the face *why should we care? you will buy our games anyways*

That's just it though, you don't get to decide what's insignificant for other people. I don't consider shit dialog and story in a rpg from someone who used to be able to write good stuff to be insignificant. Animation isn't a killer to me but it's bad enough to take me out of the scene that's going on.

To me combat is about as insignificant as a wrpg gets and yet it's all anyone can talk about with this game. Funny how that stuff works.

Any mention over there about the PS3 version frame rate issues? Just an issue with the demo or can we expect it to be patched/fixed in the retail version?

Fair enough. But I think it is unfair for someone to be labeled a Bioware fanboy/apologist/etc if they do enjoy the story/dialogue or the other things people here are dismissing.

I for one really love the story so far and enjoy the dialogue for what it's worth, but a lot here make it seem like that can't be possible.

Just finished the demo on 360. Can't wait For the full game. A couple thing bothered me though. One is the lack of ambient sounds during the invasion. Massive alien crafts destroying a city stomping around and yet it's relatively quiet.

Also what the fuck with the game being so dark. Are the blacks supposed to look crushed to the point that it looks like a poorly calibrated tv? I'm using hdmi set to the standard color video setting in the xbox options on my panny plasma. I don't remember the last game looking like this.

I thought it was really dark too. Even after increasing the gamma a bit in options.

I think you earn it from kills (maybe only bosses or tough enemies) and from examining stuff in the environment.

Almost every tier of a skill has 2 options to choose from so it's not ME1's boring minor increments and not ME2's terrible system either. They combined the best parts of both into something I think works really well and 2 people using the same skill can actually use it in different ways.
Then they fuck it all up by bringing back leveled weapons.
I hate gamers.

the multiplayer is literally:
Illinois-Lottery-Scratch-Off-Tickets-1.gif

Scratch and win!
Now this is an, RPG!

Someday RPG's will move beyond a stupid loot crutch. Someday.
