Mass Effect 3 SPOILER THREAD: LOTS OF SPECULATION FROM EVERYONE

Dark energy makes more sense than colors*. And you could actually say GTFO to the Reapers, which would have been nice.

*By that I mean they actually have a real goal to achieve, not just clean-up duty.

Yeah I edited to clarify what I meant, it still doesn't explain how someone thought forming a reaper was a good idea in the first place.

Because the game shows you the outcome. I'm not subscribing to the Shepard indoctrination theory. Bad or good, the ending is what it is. Saying that the Catalyst lies just makes it more vague.

Until Bioware makes it canon that the ending is a big lie the only logical conclusion is that the three options are real(with all their requisites).

Well, nothing more to say than. The whole indoctrination theory is based on the "Catalyst" not being truthful but only there to deceive Shepard.

I'm surprised BioWare didn't go with the dark energy thing. It's still fairly baseless, but works better than the synthesis theme, and was at the very least established in the previous game. Portraying the Reapers as desperate 'problem solvers' would have been nice, and the 'galaxy trying to solve the dark energy problem, reapers destroyed' would have laid foundations for the rest of the franchise.

I blame Walters, because I like blaming him for everything.

More Mass Effect will happen. It's inevitable. The series sells too well and BioWare is too invested to let it go now. The synergy ending was certainly an attempt to rebuild the state of the game's universe, kill Shepard's trilogy, and lay foundations for something new. If they actually go with the whole Organic/Synthetic hybrid...thing...they basically have framework to create new everything. Not just new lore/universe stuff, but new mechanics (eg: classes) too.

yeah i haven't played 3 but it seems like a nice big reset button, you cant keep escalating and escalating into bigger and bigger things, you need to take a breath and start a new story once in awhile.

still probably sucks for the long time fans at the moment though.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I want to know: why the fuck would Shepard take the Space Ghost Wizard Kids words at face value? S/he doesn't even question it, like s/he did Sovereign or Harbinger. Just... Accepts it as fact.

But... but... Casey Hudson said that no choice is the canon choice at the Bombcast special.

Dark Energy will be a single DLC mission where you save the galaxy from THE BIG RIP before stopping the Reapers.

I have a question. why it seems many people here don't like James? I mean of course he is new and not one of those most awesome characters. But at least he is decent (or not?). His humors, interaction with Garrus/Joker, "Lola" etc. Can't be worse that Jacob...

He was alot better than I was expecting.

I prefer this ending to the one we got.

Although I'm mostly over it now. New games to play, time to move on . . . it was a fun ride. Fuck you bioware.

I didn't mind him in the end, although that was due to him being holed up in a corner of the ship so I never had to talk to him after getting his bonus powers.

Yeah, he honestly didn't bug me half as much as I expected he would. Plus he's the butt of a joke by Javik, so that's good enough for me.

Dinosaur bit in the mission GETTING Javik was dumb though, but ah well.

could be because he's exhausted and half dead

EDI pulls the same joke in that mission.

At least I got to virtual hug Zaeed before the end.

...the end of all that was good.

Finished it yesterday at about 37 hours. Ending was meh. I did not care much for it. Still, i think it was a decent game and i won't let the ending make me appreciate the game less.

Maybe i am not a big enough fan of Mass Effect to actually care about it and rage about the series half assed conclusion. If anything i am more angry about the Tali stock pictures and crap like that than the mediocre ending.

Illusive Man slowly got indoctrinated over time.

He's this games Saren. (not exactly the most subtle observation I know)

Anyone else insulted by this?
He was like the smartest & conniving figure in ME2, he even figured how indoctrination works & how to control the Reapers, but he never thought that he would be indoctrinated or had a failsafe against that during the whole time?

I'm really starting to believe the indoctrination theories now.. a few of the devs aren't dismissing it, and there seems to be a LOT of evidence to support it (namely Shepard awaking in London in the 'bonus' cut-scene).

Westley Hayes ‏ @WestleyHayes
@masseffect Do you think Shepard can become indoctrinated by the Reapers?

57m Mass Effect ‏ @masseffect
@westleyhayes Anything is possible

Feres Rainwhisker ‏ @frainwhisker
@masseffect I had a dream where I woke up from the very last bit of the game with the 3 paths. Wishful thinking, or foreshadowing?

Mass Effect ‏ @masseffect
@frainwhisker Haha! Maybe. ;-)

Ondřej Petráček ‏ @Bladesip
@masseffect @fledglingzombie The kid on Earth at start = the Catalyst kid. So if kid on Earth was real or it was only hallucination.

Mass Effect ‏ @masseffect
@bladesip That's an interesting way to see it. Good job!

You're getting indoctrinated by disappointment and hope. (I have to admit that the vent kid = early indoctrination attempt and Anderson 'snaps' him out of it and a growl follows was kinda eerie.)

e: eh, what the hell, indoctrination sounds better than what we got. BELIEVE.

Yeah, i thought he was a total cliche of a bad movie vilain. The mastermind, really smart guy that will dominate the world with his big super secret plan, etc... but in the end, he ultimately gets outsmarted by something simple/stupid.

Also the way he went out in my ending, he killed himself, was laughable at best, "OH NOES I AM BEING CONTROLLED ? NOES HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE, HOW DID I FAIL!!!!!!!

Man, if there was a way to make the endings even shittier, it would be that. The only thing worse would be if it was actually just a dream and the Shephard was actually in a coma the entire time after he touched Prothean monument on Eden Prime back in Mass Effect 1.

So guys, apparently it's totally possible to keep your Shepard alive.

When you start the game at the main menu, you see two numbers. The Galactic Readiness number - which is a percentage and the Military Strength number which can be anywhere from 0 to 10,000. If GR*MS is greater than 5000, then you get Shephard to survive.

Now here are the caveats, it is impossible to get GR to exceed 50% unless you:

a) Play multiplayer missions, you seem to get 4% per mission completed.
b) Took part in the asinine pre release Facebook/IPAD marketing promotions.

No biggie right? You'll just 100% and get 10,000 in military strength. Nope. Also impossible. You can get fairly close but not to 10,000. I suspect that future DLC will allow you to do this but until that time, it's impossible to get the perfect ending by just playing the single player game.

The "Shepard is indoctrinated" theory is so, so stupid. It's just people trying to make those horrible endings easier to swallow.

The forum post on BSN explaining the new reapers' goal (was that written pre-leak?) is spoken so much better than what the Catalyst says in the game. It's better than "DAAARK ENERGY!" for sure, because it actually characterizes the reapers so infinitely better than what we received in game.'

Fanfic time?

First of all, it should have been a discussion with Harbinger. Maybe the catalyst should have been harbinger, or some energy core that's in the center of his ship. It should have been inside the Harbinger ship, and he should have been hostile and had a stance more akin to "how can you not appreciate the work we've done to preserve organic life in the galaxy?" But you begin to understand both their perspective and why it's wrong, and you can use your achievements at Overlord and with EDI and the Geth that even AI can reach peace with organic life to justify your decision to end the reapers. Maybe Harbinger can be persuaded by Shepard that what she's done is enough to prove that their summations are false and gives Shep the catalyst, or the renegade version is you unplug a bunch of tubes and Harbinger's core becomes loose so you acquire the catalyst in this fashion.

Best ending: Activate the catalyst from inside Harbinger ship, Crucible goes nuts, beams shoot out, reapers destroyed, Shepard lives

Good ending: All of the above, Shepard sacrifices herself

Worst ending: All of the above, but mass relays go with it, Shepard sacrificed

An example of the "Oh... now I understand the bad guys" that was done right is this one (the Matrix) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpKphB4w9ME Agents and reapers have similar roles in their respective stories.

eh, what the hell, indoctrination sounds better than what we got. BELIEVE.

This guy does a pretty good job at rounding up all the supporting evidence for indoctrination... it seems like far too much of a coincidence.

Plus, you know, the whole 'ending' conversation with the Catalyst takes place in fucking space. It's the point that the Crucible meets the Citadel.. it's not windowed or anything.

The "Shepard is indoctrinated" theory is so, so stupid. It's just people trying to make those horrible endings easier to swallow.

I thought the same before I looked in to it... give this theory a chance and see what people are saying before you dismiss it. The BSN is not the place to go - watch the video I've linked above.

I'm not trying to believe it's true, I genuinely do.

I've heard that Assets carry over to new game plus.

Just finished it to see this horror first-hand.

This is by far one of the worst endings to a game I have ever played. They had so much good build-up and potential and completely wasted all of it. While I don't understand raging for a new ending, I do understand being completely underwhelmed and disappointed with the story. Not to mention what the fuck is with the DLC thing at the end?

Also the whole "indoctrination process" ending really seems like people trying to make up something to cover the blow. Bioware games as of recent have not been that deep at all, and I honestly can not see that being the true case at all.

Not sure if this has been posted. Drew Karpyshyn briefly discusses ending on twitter.

@DrewKarpyshyn
@danielhumgon @GambleMike From what I hear, the basic concept of the original ending is there, though some details may have been tweaked.

@DrewKarpyshyn
@LukGaming Dark Energy was on the table at one point, but the original idea for the ending was all about Reapers and Mass Relays.#ME3

@andb52
@DrewKarpyshyn Could you provide any more detail on what you mean when you say the ending "was all about Reapers and Mass Relays?" Thanks!

‏@DrewKarpyshyn
@andb52 Nope. Already said more than I should. I don't like discussing things I wasn't involved with - too easy to say something stupid.

There is one question I would love answering about the endings and that is "how the hell did Bioware get it so spectacularly WRONG ?". I mean there are some fantastic moments in ME 3, the stirring Tuchunka story, the Citadel and the Quarian/Geth plot line. It is amazing to think the people responsible for those moments are the same ones responsible for those shit endings.

I am under no illusion that there is a "perfect" ending to the Mass Effect series. It doesn't really matter how you end the franchise you are never going to please everyone. However Bioware has somehow managed to produce an ending that is universally reviled by literally everyone. I think it's like 2-3% that actually like the endings and the other 97-98% hate them. So I just want to know how the hell they got it so wrong ?

What I want to know is how the hell they managed to completely outdo Toriyama...

I didn't think it was humanly possible.

You know, I didnt read much about ME3 before playing it, so I didn't really know much of the features in the game.

Needless to say, the ending was a huge dissappointment. First of all, when introduced to 'War Assets' I was thinking, oh cool, this will be like in ME3 where the upgrades you buy for the Normandy will have an effect in the final battle. I had hoped that some of the assets that you find, mostly for the Citadel, would actually be referenced in at least in a cutscene during the final battle.

And then there is the ending which answers nothing. What a pile of crap.
