Max Payne

So, who likes this series? I've played the first and I loved it, but I have it no more, so I'm looking for a place to purchase it, for a relatively low price, and maybe it's sequel, in the future which I haven't played.

Max Payne 2 on the PC was really good.
Pretty short, but really good.

Max Payne 2 upgrades the game mechanics considerably, so unless you are limited to PS2, go for the sequel.

I hated Max Pain 2 on the story board front.
The rag doll physics were a little to exagerrated also. But shotting people off of buidings was cool.
Max Pain 2 was superior gameplay wise, but max himself was nothing more than a spent shell of his former self.
His style, his look it just wasn't max payne.

He was much cooler as a leather jacket wearing, flannel shirt underneath, rockin constipated mad man!!!

Liked Max Payne 2 for the action and Max Payne 2 for the action and the visuals. Bring on the 3rd! The console versions are just poor tards.

Really? The Xbox version of May Payne 2 was really good. 60 fps (it rarely dropped as far as I can remember), nice enough textures, quick save, and not much in terms of loading. Never had a problem with controls either.

I played it on a pretty good PC, so I could get the full advantage of the graphics with a great framerate. The Xbox version is not as hot, but hot enough. It's the controls for me...
And the PS2 version is the REAL tard.

Since Max Payne 2 flopped big time. You should be able to buy both 1 and 2 relatively cheap now at any major videogame store.

Anyone else think that the dream sequences totally killed Max Payne 1?

Killed the whole game? No... Were downers in what is otherwise a fun shootathon? Definitely.

MP1 was great, MP2 was even better. Dream sequences in MP2 were actually fun as opposed to the more tedious ones in MP1. One of the better action games I've ever played.

Nah, they weren't too bad...and didn't really ruin the game. The sequences in MP2 were absolutely incredible, though...

I got into the Max Payne games really late. I watched a friend of mine play the first one, and he was an absolute scrub, so I go the wrong impression. Last year when I was unemployed I got the first one, and fucking loved it. Soon as I finished it I literally went to EB and picked up the second one. While I can't sit down and play either one for more than an hour or two, I don't think that takes away from them.

This is probably one of my all time favorite series in games. For what it presents, it's also my nomination for most under appreciated game evar. Bullet time is the least of what it deserves credit for, yet is the focal point of how it is generalized.

I really enjoyed the first game in the series, but inexplicably never picked up Max Payne 2. Maybe something to buy after the holidays...?

i liked MP1 a lot, played it on the PC, teh dream sequences were downers but the action was fantastic, and bullet time was novel. it did seem quite repetative to me after a few hours though.
but from the look of this thread, sounds like MP2 is hot, might have to hunt down the xbox version.

Loved the first one (blood trail dream sequences aside), and utterly adored the sequel. Shame that the series hasn't done as well as it deserved - I really want to see a third.

The mission that involved protecting the guy in the Baseballbat Boy costume was hilarious.

MP2 is allot better then MP1. Not really any new gameplay changes, but its allot mor polished, tehd ream squences are actually pretty cool and fun, and the action is even better then before.

Not really any new gameplay changes

Oh yes there is. Bullet Time 2.0 was a huge addition and fixed my main complaint in the original game. Max Payne 1 revoled too heavily around the "shoot-dodge" while MP2 manages to change the focus of the gameplay quite a bit.

Could you go in to more detail? I haven't played MP2 much, I cracked it open and went through the beginnings of the warehouse but that was it.

BT2.0 was basically designed to allow Max a speed and BT meter increase as he killed enemies (start slow, do well, speed starts to increase...), eventually bringing him up to normal speed while enemies remain in slow motion. I'm sure there are more nuances in there as well, but that's the gist of it.

It sounded so simple, but it totally changes the feel of the combat. Rather than simply shoot dodging your way around the levels, you can now charge into rooms and, if executed properly, you can drop everybody as if you just came out of Equilibrium or something. When you add in the physics, the gun battles actually become quite visceral. The shoot doge itself also received an improvement. Upon hitting the floor, you can continue to fire your weapons from your landing position. Max will not get up until you let off the triggers for a second and move.

It doesn't sound particularly impressive in writing, but in practice, the combat takes a massive leap forward in the fun department. The core game design + improved presentation make for a hugely improved sequel. I much prefer it to the original...

I still have Max Payne 2 sitting on my shelf... I enjoyed the first one, but just haven't had time for #2.

btw, Wario64 made a post yesterday where ebgames is selling this new for $10... along with some other good games for all platforms.

Max Payne 2 is excellent in both action and story/writing. Short but sweet and always at the ready for a loud, explosive replay (just like the original).
