Rumor: GTA IV and Max Payne 3 Remasters Likely in Development

I can already see the Polygon/PC Gamer/The Gaymer headlines: "Rockstar rumored to remaster violently racist Max Payne 3: remember the game from 2012 where you live out the white man's fantasy of mowing down hordes of economically disadvantaged Brown people?"

I don't know about Max Payne, but GTA 4 seems quite convenient for them; probably will be something a la RDR1 but it's practically free cost for them with potential revenues.
Rockstar would be all hands on GTAVI and not planning to release any other GTA's around it's release.

I'm debating on if I should go ahead and buy a digital ps3 copy of GTA4 complete edition now because it will probably get delisted closer to launch and they might just outsource the remake to grove street games or whatever their name is

or do y'all think they'll put the proper effort into a remaster of this one?

Max Payne 3 is one of the best action games ever and should be available on a new platform.

Grand Theft Auto 4, I really enjoyed it when it came out but have a feeling it has not aged well.

I loved Max Paynes 1 and 2 when they came out, and was kind of disappointed with 3, mainly in the story and change of setting.

Except now, 13 years later, I've played MP3 through maybe 10 times and think it's the best of them all. The story is great, and the gameplay even better.

I've tried replaying MP1 & 2 on occasion but haven't completed either one in over a decade.

GTA 4 is not a good GTA. It was an incredible technological leap for it's time, but the game greatly missed the terrain variety that San Andreas and GTA V has. It felt like you were just stuck in a concrete jungle with very little to do. Your character didn't have deeper RPG elements like in San Andreas nor the buying of properties in Vice City. Felt so hallow compared to the rest of GTA's
Not to mention you can finish vice cities story in it's entirety before 4 even gets interesting

This seems like BS, a tweet of a post from a guy with trust me bro energy.

That being said, both games would be nice brought to modern hardware and higher res.

Max Payne 3 is still that gem that people don't focus on enough.

That is correct.

One of the coolest trailers of all time imo

Top 10er for me. I play it annually.

Only learned today that "Tears" (the song from the quoted trailer for anyone else reading this) was written explicitly for Max Payne 3. Now, reading the lyrics and remembering the in-game context...I teared up. That's heavy shit.

I'll gladly replay Max Payne 3 when it gets remastered. I played the BC version from the 360, but it's just so ugly compared to the PC version.

GTA 4 on the other hand plays very well through backwards compatibility, all they need to do is bring it to PlayStation (and possibly Switch 2).

These games do Not need a remaster. Are console only plebs really that desperate to play old games? You can play this on any decent mini pc and it'll be there right now, along with a huge library of last gen games

You can technically play it, sure but GTA IV on PC is a mess

Broken lighting, clunky performance, and terrible stuttering… it's far from the experience it should be

No its not? Install Fusionfix and every problem is solved. A single drag and drop.

Yes it is broken

If a game needs a community made fix just to run properly, that kind of proves the point lol

Saying a game isn't broken just because there's a community fix is like saying a car isn't totaled because some guy down the street can duct tape it back together

Just because the community can patch the holes doesn't mean the product isn't falling apart. If a game needs unofficial workarounds to run as intended, it is broken. No amount of modding changes that fact.

Max Payne 3 multiplayer was so fun that I didn't even care for the story mode lol. I remember reading an interview on how it was difficult to do slow motion in multiplayer. So they chose to only slow down your screen when you were facing towards a person that was activating slow motion. Please bring this gem back 🙏

Allright but if its fixed why would Rockstar put in the effort lmao

Also who cares who fixes it if its fixed its fixed

Because it's not really fixed, at least not in a way that works for everyone

Rockstar putting in the effort would mean giving players a version that works out of the box, with modern standards and proper support (hopefully). That matters, especially for people who just want to play the game without digging through forums or installing third-party fixes. A remaster isn't just about making it run, it's about making it shine again.

Also who cares who fixes it if its fixed its fixed
Not everyone is savvy enough to install mods or follow a tutorial

Mods can break with updates, aren't always accessible to everyone, and rely on volunteers. That's not a long term or guaranteed solution

I've been wanting to replay GTAIV for years, I only got half way through in 2008 and for some reason never got back to it. Looking back on some snippets online I do love the writing. So a remaster would be welcome.

As for Max Payne 3, I never played it but hear a lot of hype, so that could be one for me too.

I wonder if this is a case of porting, bumping up resolution, framerate and accuracy/precision of fx/filtering just like RDR(1); or if it's going to be more of a visual remake using the up to date engine. I'm assuming the former, in which case, I'd hope for a somewhat cheaper price. If it's the latter I'd pay full price.

Ultimately -- with properties of this calibre from studios/publishers of this size -- I think both should be on the cards, a straight port with scaling of basic features to satisfy the posterity/preservation/access angle @ $30, then a full remake with a major visual upgrade and a partial functional one at @ $60 for those who want a refreshed experience brought up to modern standards.

GTA4 it's more a linear narrative driven game and not necessarily it's a bad thing; personally I wasn't a great fan of the San Andreas rpg mechanics and I liked GTA 4 for what was. I don't think all GTA need to be like San Andreas. Also dlcs were quite cool and it was funny replay it from 2 different perspectives with some new mini games/gameplay mechanics (sort of).

If you know to read you can install the mods, the game is not updated anymore and its mods are always accessible to everyone.

So yes, mods exist, but that doesn't replace the value of proper, developer supported updates

Are you guys really worried you'll forget how to install mods or lose your little modding hobby? Because honestly, making players jump through hoops just to enjoy the game properly isn't fair or reasonable

It's infinitely better than praying for the devs doing a remaster that on top of that will very probably make us pay for the game again.

All that "shitty" Rockstar gameplay and yet they still made the best third person shooter of all time

It's the closest thing to me to being the Die Hard of videogames

It would be hilarious if the Max Payne 3 remaster releases around the same time GTA 6 does, showing everyone again that R* had one game with excellent gunplay, which they never used for any other game, including GTA 6.

I hope most people here understand that R* (especially R*) is not going to release 3 remasters within a year. Max Payne 3 is maybe the only one who couldn't steal a bit of GTA6 thunder.

Both GTA4 and RDR2 would be massive releases that will sell millions again with a next gen upgrade. No way in hell they will release more than 1 remaster between now and GTA6.

GTA Trilogy Remaster had lots and lots of exposure for months after release and not because it was shit but because people want to play it and talk about it.

They will do 1 remaster this year.

I have never played the max payne games. I feel like i missed out. I thankfully have never watched the max payne movie either.
MP1 and MP2 on PS2 are great looking, extremely well written linear one run games with zero replayability. The linearity paired with the total lack of replayability really makes them off-brand for Rockstar.
The kind of games that you play once and sell back to GameStop immediately after beating.
