Rumor: GTA IV and Max Payne 3 Remasters Likely in Development

As long as Grove Street is handling the remasters I'm down for this 👌
Is this you?

GTA 4 is not a good GTA. It was an incredible technological leap for it's time, but the game greatly missed the terrain variety that San Andreas and GTA V has. It felt like you were just stuck in a concrete jungle with very little to do. Your character didn't have deeper RPG elements like in San Andreas nor the buying of properties in Vice City. Felt so hallow compared to the rest of GTA's

Usually I'd be excited, but after Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition they can shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

Holy fuck Max Payne 3?? I am all in, hopefully it contains the MP as well, because Branco Headquarters was super fun back in the day.

I have never played the max payne games. I feel like i missed out. I thankfully have never watched the max payne movie either.

The only studio that can be trusted with the GTA4 remaster is Grove Street and I CANNOT WAIT to see what they do with it.

Onwards to greatness!

Day one for me for both of them. GTA4 is the best game in the series, not by much but it's better than VC and San Andreas, blows every other game out of the water. MP3 is also amazing. But I will not be doing a platinum run for Max Payne 3 again, New York City minute or whatever it was called, where you had to beat the game without dying or saving, that was too much.

At the very, very least you HAVE to play the first game. Amazing art, writting, music and gameplay. It has it all!

During my last replay I really came to appreciate some tracks. This shit sounds straight out of a 90's action movie:

He doesn't need to wait to play. Treating Max Payne 1-3 like they are NES games is nonsensical.

This obsession with graphics is so exhausting.
Dude. I play old games all the time. I mostly always have played the original.

I just gave him this advice because he ain't a fan yet. In the end he can do whatever he wants.

It is - by far - the classic of the series.
Yeah man I agree! It has it all.

I didn't like the direction they took 2 in, I missed the grim streets full of junkies and mobsters and all that stuff about the Inner Circle did nothing at all for me.

3's writting is kinda meh but at least I loved the gameplay.

Yeah and I'm saying that he absolutely doesn't need to wait. Rockstar didn't even make the first one and only co-developed the second: nobody knows what they're going to do to them. (edit: made a mistake saying this, got the MP3 remaster and MP1/2 remakes mixed up, see my post later in the thread acknowledging this)

All 3 games are available for dirt cheap right now and they not at all in anyway held back by their graphics, certainly not on PC.

This is just propagating the idea that games past a certain age are just dead things and you can just wait for the remake.

Well, I agree with everything you said. So, it's up to him now.

Yeah, I also unfortunately couldn't really get on with Max Payne 2. It was quite a big disappointment for me, actually.

Sorry, I got really confused here for a moment and mixed up this news about MP3 remaster (god knows what that means now, I think it's absurd to call the new Oblivion a remaster) with the old news about Remedy remaking Max Payne 1.

Had a brain fart out wrote something that doesn't make sense. Still, my larger point about how we don't know how any remasters OR remakes of any these games will turn out still stands.

With Max Payne 3 in particular I can't even imagine for one second thinking that it looks too 'old' to recommend for someone to play now. That said, I will concede that it somewhat depends on what the state of these games is on like on console, when it comes to those players.

Nowadays I just mostly cannot stand 30FPS and, say, anything below 1080p-1440p resolution my big TV. That means that usually what I want for older games is just for them to get patches to run at (ideally) 4K/60.

I don't think I can play them because you guys are fighting. Or maybe I will play because you guys are fighting. Whichever pays me more compliments wins. The wait or play now team.

Very true. That texture work really helps make the game look cool even today.

Well, yeah that's the other side of this constant thirsting for remasters and remakes, the other part of the debate about graphics.

You can always make graphics better. You could remake Max Payne 1 once every 5 years for the next 50 years if you wanted and the graphics would always be technically better.

But the original graphics (of this and any game that has a remaster/remake out or coming) will always have their own very specific aesthetic and feel that contributes to the style and atmosphere of that game. And I am just loathe - really loathe - to keep just casually suggesting to gamers that they don't even give an older game a chance because it is has graphics of a certain vintage.

I'm sure Remedy will make the remake of MP1 look amazing (same with Rockstar and MP3), but will it have the same aesthetic? If it doesn't, what does that do to the experience of the game? It might be better aesthetic, it might not - but certainly the original aesthetic is unique.

I'm really tired of this casual abandonment of older games, this idea that technically superior graphics just automatically supersede the aesthetic achievements of older graphics. IMO, that game looks great even now. Of course the graphics are aged, wildly aged but the look and style holds up. Running it on modern hardware means the game is crisp and runs at very high framerates.

With the PC version or a patched/boosted console version you don't have to contend with a crippling framerate or resolution, which can often be the thing that more substantially holds an older game back.

I played through Max Payne 3 a few years ago and I can understand why people like it, but I hated what they did to Max as a character. The unskippable cutscenes were also a chore so hopefully the remaster addresses this. I'm also in the hates GTAIV camp so this news isn't terribly exciting.

How about making bully 2. It shouldn't take an entire generation to make 1 game considering the size of Rockstar studios.
It does, you can't get to the current standards of scale and fidelity held at Rockstar's games without having ALL of its studios working on a single project, like they've been doing since 2013.
I personally think Rockstar's games are shit for the most part so I don't truly care, but I'm also fully aware that the market completely disagrees with me.
Probably more profitable than a Xbox Series port. They should have done it ages ago, though, weird as fuck company.

Nothing? Remedy is remaking them.

Well I guess it's thank to the GTA6 delay and I fully expected R would have played this easy card. I think GTA4 could even lead a good amount of money thanks to the GTA6 thirst.

They didn't make that remaster in the first place. They outsourced it, it went to shit and then took over and made it good.
Correct, and further proves my point.

R* has a deep talent pool and basically infinite money and they still said "eh, just farm it out"
