MCV: PlayStation on Xbox backwards compatibility

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Did a search and couldn't see anything so..
PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan says the backwards compatibility of Xbox One is a legitimate strategy in trying to upgrade 360 players.

But he says that Sony will not be following the same tactic, as the firm is investing in other software updates to PS4. He also adds that - based on their experience - few gamers actually make use of such functionality.

“It was quite a complicated announcement and I’m not sure I fully understand it yet. And I suspect there might be a few twists in that particular tale. But we will see,” he told MCV when discussing the Xbox One announcement.

“It is an entirely legitimate approach, and if you are seeking to upgrade 360 owners to Xbox One, it is a very logical approach to take.

“We are just taking a different path. To the extent that you are investing in software technology - which is what this is, it’s delivered through software not through hardware - we are trying to commit our resources and put our emphasis on delivering on the promises we made right at the start of this whole PS4 thing, to be the forward-looking, socially-connected console. We are placing our bets on things like SharePlay, on things like Play as you Download, and things like Suspend/Resume.

“We are just taking two different approaches. Unfortunately there are just not sufficent enough software engineers in the world for everyone to do everything. Each platform holder has to make their choices, we made one and they made another. Their choice is entirely legitimate, and I think our choice is legitimate, too. In some ways it is quite nice to have points of difference between the two platforms, and people will decide which approach suits them best.

“We have experience of backwards compatibility. The earliest PS3 model was backwards compatible with PS2, and it is a much requested feature… but actually it’s not so greatly used.

“On balance, we are happy with our approach and we don’t wish to be defensive about it at all. But as I say, both approaches are legitimate.”

I don't know, not really happy with that reply.

It's expensive and they're putting that money into other things, different strategy. That's pretty much it. They can't afford to dump a lot of money and resources into it like Microsoft can.

Oh, in that case I'm just going to rebuy some PS3 multiplats as Xbox 360 BC titles

If you don't get PS1 and PS2 Classics working on PS4 Sony you're dead to me

He's right that about Microsoft's announcement being "complicated" and how there will probably a few "twists" when all is said and done.

He's wrong about Sony's approach being legitimate. PS Now is a bastardization of those PS3 experiences.

' and it is a much requested feature… but actually it’s not so greatly used.'

Well we cant use it if its not actually there now can we...

I bet doing the same thing for PS4 would be agonizing due to PS3's architecture.

Microsoft doing this is awesome no doubt.

as the firm is investing in other software updates to PS4

I just wish we weren't kept in the dark about what's coming to the PS4's OS so often. Every time a new significant firmware is released, there is a period of months before we even know what might be coming next.

It's absolutely true that it is highly requested but used little.

It's a PR home run for Microsoft, though.

Well, it depends on the games that are available when it launches. Games like Reach and Forza are not on the current list right?

Also, MS finally deserved some good PR, so good on them.

I like how he used play as you download and suspend resume as examples when the Xbox One has those too. Playshare is cool though.

Conceptually what's he saying doesn't really make sense, couching it as if it's a binary choice. Xbox is also pouring a lot into features for the Xbox One OS as well as the backwards compatibility.

He's not talking about PS Now though, he's talking about their strategy to attract consumers to their console. At least that's what I make of it.

Few people use BC you say? So why did you create a service that let you play PS3 titles?

Because it's primarily goal isn't to solve BC it's to enable them to have their service on as many platforms as possible without needing a PS device.

Sums it up for me. The second I saw that there was voting for BC for the One I knew that it wasn't going to be as simple as it initially sounded.

Excited to see where it goes because a lot of my friends wanted that, and I have a big 360 library that would see use if I ever get a Xbone.

I rather Sony not waste their time with backwards capatability, I personally have absolutely zero interest in playing last gen games. If I only had an Xbone, and multiplat games didn't exist... I would maybe... Play Skyrim

BC is pretty awesome tho. I wish i could re-download ATLEAST my Ps1 and Ps2 classics on Ps4, Ps3 will probably never happen.
Good Job on making that happen, MS.

It's much needed goodwill from Microsoft. It's not going to be widely used, or come close to include all 360 games. But they don't need to.

and poor emulation of 360 games on xbox one wont be?

PS Now is more of way for Sony to expand the Playstation brand to new audiences and prepare for a possible future where streaming is the way to play instead of a console and less about having backwards compatibility

Basically "we want everyone to pay for PS now so don't get your hopes up."

Plus you're forgetting how lucrative their remasters are. Last of Us remastered sold like crazy, Uncharted will as well. They can just do remasters and make tons of money for their larger games. They have less of a need for something like BC being the dominant market leader and with PSNow as well.

But it's huge in that I hope my XBLA titles are available. Things like Shadow Complex, Limbo, Street Fighter HD remix. Would love if I could transfer that to Xbox one.
