If you're going by NPD's definition of the year, your YTDs are fine. For Japanese trackers, this would be the second week of the year, though.

Is Taiko Wii still hard to find?

I went to a fairly major game store here in Fukuoka last weekend and they were sold out of it. Haven't looked at any other stores, maybe they have better stock.

He's right about Tatsunoko approaching Capcom, but it's hardly 'budget'.

Well I admit that was a stretch but I doubt the game using last generation 3D model quality with mid 90's sprite-like animation for a fighting game was much of a feat. Besides wasn't Capcom's initial shipment only 35k?

Neither the DS nor any of the consoles had what I would consider a "typical" New Year's transition. Weird.

dblog hardware is so near in every case but PSP that it looks like he's given little touched data or he is just touching it himself. Its a damn shame anyway, bogus data is bogus data.

No, but its you again, I'm sure they had made enough profit to cover game development costs for the next 5 years before selling the first copy.

The New Play Control games have actually done pretty well, especially Pikmin. Considering how cheap these games would be to make, Nintendo would be making a healthy profit out of them.

GameCube ports in general seem to be finding pretty good sales, which can't really be said of most PS2 ports, funny enough. I guess it just goes to show how criminal it is for some games to appear on unpopular platforms.

I doubt we'll see hits such as Smash Bros. DX or Mario Kart Double Dash on them, but I can imagine Wave Race Blue Storm, F-Zero GX, SMS and Wind Waker to hit the lineup next.

Well Devil Survivor is not a bomba but I hope it does well over the weekend. Maybe it'll be #1 for the week! :D

Either that or Naruto...

If i remember correctly there were also a report(s) of an initial shipment on something like 70k. I dont know which one that is correct though, the one at about 35k or the one at about 70k.

Wii de Asobu: Mario Tennis GC should sell first shipment easily. After all, Mario Tennis 64 was nearly a million seller.
Konami can't do a proper job for Wii user base, and it isn't funny anymore.:D

Granted, they also used the Naomi model. When the majority of R&D is already covered by arcades and you have a seamless console translation, it's pretty easy to cover costs. ;)

I mean, how much do you think the Wii minigames and two extra characters might've cost exactly? :lol

Fixed.

Doubt we'll see Castlevania on the Wii again, apart from a retro WiiWare entry.

Well, Smash Bros DX would be kinda superfluous given that SSBB is already there and still selling, as would MKDD when MK Wii is still tearing up the charts.

I think you could probably draw up a shortlist of likely games based on whether they've got a Wii equivalent (MK, SSB), whether the game would be suitable as a "New Play" experience (Mario Tennis, Pikmin, Metroid and DKJB all have gameplay that meshes well with the control options the Wii offers) and whether they're possibly going to cause issues with upcoming releases (the sales of a new Legend of Zelda, for example, might be affected by a budget re-release of something like Wind Waker).

With that in mind, we have a list that looks like this:

1080 Avalanche (Possible, and would fit with the balance board)
Animal Crossing (Out - full sequel on Wii already)
Baten Kaitos Origins (Unlikely)
Battalion Wars (Out - full sequel on Wii already)
Chibi-Robo (Yes - already announced)
Cubivore (Unlikely)
Custom Robo (Unlikely)
Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix (Unlikely)
Donkey Konga 1-3 (Unlikely - licensing and control issues)
Doshin the Giant (Unlikely)
Eternal Darkness (Unlikely)
F-Zero GX (Unlikely - control issues. The game would have to be significantly redesigned to work with the looser motion control.)
Fire Emblem: PoR (Out - full sequel on Wii already)
Geist (Unlikely)
GiFTPiA (Unlikely)
Kirby Air Ride (Possible)
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures (Unlikely - a full-blown "sequel" on WiiWare with DS linkup is more likely IMO)
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Unlikely - unless the next Zelda is a way off yet I feel a budget re-release could cause problems)
Luigi's Mansion (Possible - Wii controls would fit nicely, and game would benefit from added content)
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (Possible - perfect fit, but depends on whether a full MG game is in the pipes)
Mario Kart Double Dash (Out - full sequel on Wii already)
Mario Party 4-7 (Out - full sequel on Wii already)
Mario Power Tennis (Already released)
Mario Superstar Baseball (Out - full sequel on Wii already)
Metroid Prime 1-2 (Yes - already announced)
Odama (Unlikely - tied to peripheral and would need significant reworking)
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (Out - full sequel on Wii already)
Pikmin 1-2 (Yes - already announced/released)
Pokemon Colosseum (Out - full sequel on Wii already)
Pokemon XD (unlikely)
Star Fox Adventures (unlikely)
Star Fox Assault (unlikely - a full Starfox sequel seems more likely at this point)
Super Mario Strikers (Out - full sequel on Wii already)
Super Mario Sunshine (Possible, though Nintendo may feel it could cause issues with the mainline Mario "brand". For a counterpoint, see Mario64 DS...)
Super Smash Bros Melee (Out - full sequel on Wii already)
Wario World (unlikely)
WarioWare Inc. Mega Party Games (Out - full sequel on Wii already. A new WarioWare using the balance board is more likely)
Wave Race: Blue Storm (Possible - game would lend itself more to motion control than F-Zero GX)

So, if we do get a second round of the Play on Wii/New Play Control games, I'd bet on it looking like this:

1080 Avalanche
Luigi's Mansion
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Wave Race: Blue Storm

...with the possible inclusion of SMS or Wind Waker.

Luigi's Mansion and F-Zero GX are the lone NPC picks I'd want. Maybe Paper Mario 2 too, but I'm not sure how well motion/IR would work with it.

I guess I'm late on this but what happened to White Knight Chronicles? When it was first revealed it looked amazing but I'm looking at screenshots now and it looks startlingly mediocre.

Of course arcade covered it, even before being released along side the console version like it was.

Those didn't cost money, it made money while being developed, its on the Wii after all!

LOL. I'm sensing some resentment? Might I subscribe some quality TOS2 gametime to take your mind off the Nintendomination?

And then threw it on the giant backlog. I've resolved to finish IU before diving into another 360 RPG but man, it's hard to work up the urge. :/

Okay, I give up.

My point is: The Wii has yet to prove that it can be a good system for third party games. Selling lots of Nintendo games on a Nintendo console means nothing, jeez even the Gamecube had Mario Kart, Mario Party, Smash Bros, Mario platforming, Zelda, Mario RPG tresspasing the 400k (ahuahua) barrier

The potential can be a good thing but when you have two systems where third parties are doing significantly BETTER (DS) and better in general (psp) it's not that crazy to think that maybe the third party ship will sail before that potential comes to play after so many bombs.
There are ALOT of bombs on the PSP. ALOT.......It doesnt sell software to a wider audience.

Interesting list and analysis, Cosmonaut X. I was about to dispute Fire Emblem's eligibility, but then I found out Radiant Dawn didn't have any waggle either. Interestingly, while it's called New Play Control in English, the Japanese title Wii de Asobu doesn't necessarily mean the games have to have Wii controls. I guess it's implied though.

But I think Paper Mario RPG has a decent chance, because Metroid Prime 3 didn't stop the first two from making the line up.

I think Wind Waker deserves a possible. Miyamoto himself is behind the concept of GC games coming to Wii with new controls, so I think SMS and WW would be on his list of games to make it over.

And how much more those third party games should have sold ?
Isn't that the same argument used in many discussions about 3rd party Wii games? We all tend to make up our own definitions of bombs since we rarely know publisher expectations, budgets, how it would have/could have sold on another platform.

Its a shame too because Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn could have benefited from pointer controls to navigate the field and menus.

I cannot remember, does Pikmin have "waggle", or is it just changing over controls to the point and click kind

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Expected more from MNario Power Tennis - the ad was just too awesome for the casual crowd to ignore. I mean Mario + Wii Sport Tennis Controls...come on :)
