Media Create Sales: 09/08 - 09/14

They had their eye towards the rest of the world. They focused on developing a Tales game that would appeal to the rest of the world as well as Japan, a game that could sell up to 20 million units worldwide (lol). .

And that's where they failed. LO did just that. And don't tell me its not fair because it was published by MS, because so was BD and that saw the same fate. all JRPG's with cute cartoon looks suffer from this in the US. So did Eternal Sonata. FFXIII will blow what LO did out of the water.

Let's disect ToV.
Japanimation? Check.
Shit marketing in the US? Check.
So-so reviews? Check.
Unappealing teenage characters? Check.
B-quality game? Deffinitely.

In short, Namco may have expected Vesperia to do only okay in Japan (hence the 150K 'goal') but they definitely expected it to sell crazy Symphonia-style everywhere else. The fact that it may not will reflect much larger to Namco than whatever it sells in Japan. If that means a port to recover costs, you can bet they'll do it, because they banked a lot on the Western success of this game.
This is true, but I think word of mouth may help to some extent in the US. I don't know what to expect for Europe, though. The 360 is biggest in the UK, but I'm not sure if the UK is the strongest market in Europe for Tales.

Edit: Damn, so close.

DS Lite 63,859
PSP 30,156
Wii 29,686
Xbox 360 28,188
PS3 8,053
PS2 7,669

damn, the MC lines didn't cross...

and PS3 sales are a fucking joke, it just gets worse with time. 8k weekly is just 2k or 3k more than gamecube at same point in history.

If SO4 lands anywhere in the first 3 months, it will probably surpass even my estimates. But once again, there are so many ifs, that that's why I hate predicting monthly or weekly numbers, especially based on previous numbers.

But you're comfortable predicting lifetime numbers of ~2 million?

I don't disagree with you that the 360 will plateau higher than it has been, but I do still think you're overly optimistic in your projections. Of course, at this point, a difference of 1k in the weekly average, while statistical noise for any other console, would make a pretty big difference to 360 sales.

Awww... Poor MS. Dreams crushed by the harsh Media Create realities.

What's this I hear about them screwing the pooch again? Short stocked already?

It really isn't guys.

If you just do simple math for the next 3 years at an average of 3k per week. That's not inluding spikes, holidays, price drop or no other help begining with January 08 until Dec of 2011, that's 500k in sales alone. And considering the 360's knack for doubling its YTD numbers in spikes and holiday months alone....it should reach it way before that date.

That's what my original predictions at launch date were based on. If that's not conservative I don't know what is.

The whole idea is based on the 360 selling better in Japan as it gets more games and drops in price. It has been on track to doing just that.

360 > PS3?:D I agree.

PSP collapsing Wii-style this year?
The new model has been announced and is about three weeks from release. I'd expect sales of the 2000 to be a bit slower in the meantime. If it had some decent games released recently, it might have bucked that, but there's been virtually nothing since P*P. Dissidia + 3000 should have it looking healthy again for a little while.

My only question is why is the 360 still sold out in places?

Is Microsoft having a problem or are retailers scared of ordering too many? Or are they TRYING to create artificial demand? Maybe these are Jaspers that are going out.

I think Microsoft underestimated demand, like most folks did. You have to remember, they pretty much just finished selling the launch shipment last month. I'm sure they didn't want to overdo it again.

But you would think they would have seen that with ToV last month. You don't supply 30k units after a price drop and your system being sold out for a month following a 24k week. It doesn't make any sense, especially with the holidays coming up. Even if sales were to return to normal they would be all gone by the end of the year. I think there's more to it than meets the eye. My money's on them riding the "sell out" thing for as long as they can.

You mean they hold out until they've finally frustrated potential customers into giving up and buying another console instead?

The 360 doesn't have the incredible pull that the Wii does. It's just slightly catching the eye of a few customers at the moment, but it has hardly become the 'it' object of the day.

jimbo, you have to trust me on this. If they tried this kind of strategy here, no one would give a flying fuck. It would be like SNK riding a Neo Geo sellout during the 16bit era.

I don't know, man. Last time there was a price cut and a hit game was back when Ace Combat 6 launched, and they barely edged out the PS3 at around 18,000 sold. Outside of Blue Dragon, they didn't have a week that big until ToV. I could see how they would not have expected the demand to be this high, to the point where after 30,000 units demand is still not being met. This really hasn't happened to the 360 before (the BD bumps coincided with the holiday season).

On the other hand, having Media Create say that the 360 just losing to the Wii was due to supply (says that there is a high probability the 360 would've beaten the Wii had there been enough supply) is nice PR too.

Funny but I didn't see neither the PS3 nor the Wii get an increase in sales due to it being sold out for the last month. Both of their sales are down Not saying it has anywhere the pull the Wii gets, but people did just that...waited and bought it when it became available. Doesn't this week prove that?

If they could even catch the eye of a small and stable niche, thats still better than what they had, and its something that MS could work off of. Baby steps, better than nothing and all that.

WKC and the two FF13 games can't come soon enough for Sony, those PS3 sales are pretty bad.

Again I just don't see a good explanation for this. 30k wouldn't have lasted them through the end of the year regardless of whether the price drop had an effect or not. I'm just saying it's strange because I don't see them having manufacturing problems other than Jaspers.

uh...so why did they say at CEDEC that PS3, 360, and multiplat were all considered?
If they had the ability to consider the PS3 at the time, then why would they not chose it? It's been the general consensus for many of Namco's 360 projects that they debuted on the system merely because it was the one available to start development earliest.

http://www.famitsu.com/game/news/1217975_1124.html

"The next "Tales of" should take the direction of development on a HD machine. In other words, the next installment should be on PS3 or 360." (Higuchi). There were proponents for PS3 exclusivity and multiplatform development, but in the end, "as we got into development, there were a number of merits (to develop on the 360 and the 360 was chosen in the end)" (Higuchi). Gouda was worried at that time, "because the 360 hadn't sold well domestically, if we were to develop a game on the 360, there would be a limit as to the number of copies that could ultimately be sold, and it would be difficult to motivate the staff because of that. What should we do?" But taking into account the positive situation of the 360 in the rest of the world, Gouda convince his staff by telling them "if we develop this game both domestically and internationally, it will succeed as a business".

Rough/quick translation but yeah...

Since the "merits of developing on 360" weren't elaborated on, I'll leave that up to your guys' imagination and what not.

It's likely they were planning to do more shipments as time went on, pending sales, like a real console, and weren't expecting quite the burst the price-drop + IU caused. I'm sure the next shipment was already planned; now they simply have to move it up.

I doubt it matters much either way. The people buying 360s are either otaku or ex-pats, and both are likely willing to wait for a restock rather than give up completely.

Wait, does it? I wasn't aware there was a firm release date yet.

There isn't. Some time in the opening of the new year is all that's known...atleast as of like 5 or 6am today...that usually encompasses January.

Wouldn't the merit be they had the development kits earlier? Plus easier hardware to develop for?

Yes. This has actually been stated in the past too, but was not reiterated this time for some reason. I'll leave that up to your imagination (j/k).

You will see the PSP trumping the DS in December and the DS trumping the PSP in January then.

Hmm, this reminds me.

Probably an extremely obvious question, but in the coming months before a mainline Dragon Quest hits, does the system it's releasing for tend to get sudden sales boosts?

Well, I guess Microsoft will be using Famitsu data to cover their sales from now on. I hope Microsoft has a press release about their achievement.

I doubt they care as much about beating the Wii, as they do about beating the PS3. The Wii is something they probably don't want to talk about.

It's strange that they have been quite though. You would figure they would say something about the sales over there. Very strange indeed.

Kagari said:

The later, I can understand as one of the merits. The former? Well, Higuchi does mention that they found out the merits as they progressed in development which I would think is an indication that they had both dev kits?

Probably wanted to wait for Media Create before saying something. It'd look pretty bad to say, "We kicked the Wii's ass. We're #1 in home consoles!" only to lose it after MC numbers came out. This way they can issue a press release that looks good regardless of which tracker you prefer.
