If people care for anecdotal evidence (and from what I gather, people at least care to read it), then I can say that this couple at Ginza Bic Camera had a kid holding the SMG case. Then the kid put it back and the parents took MP8 instead (they had Wii Sports and Wii Play in their hands already).
T'was a sad moment.
I was at Tesco (dunno if you have them), in North London, England. It was a huge kinda like a Walmart. This couple, had a baby, so they must be buying the game for a kid who wasn't there. They wanted a Mario game, the man was like "uhhh, wot we need, right,... is super mario. That's the one" there was a chart and he pointed to Mario Party 8. Then he realized there was a "Super Paper Mario", he goes, "uhh there it is, that's the one, its actually super paper mario". He didn't notice that SMG was number 5 or 6, while MP8 was 20, and SPM was 13 or so. Luckily they didn't have any stock left of SMG. And I don't think the couple were planning to buy it at that moment. So they went of after a while. But I almost felt like telling them, "don't buy SPM, you would never understand it, and your little kid probably would never play a mario game again." I still feel, they are going to buy some trash, over what they really want.
While I don't mind them buying a good RPG like SPM, I don't think they knew exactly what they were getting into.
I think at this time of the year large stores should employ someone who can help give advice on sales and on presents. Like you can do in a game store or clothes shop. Or in a restaurant you have a waiter.
