In case anyone was wondering, the biggest third party debut for a handheld system is Yugioh Duel Monsters 4:

From 12/4 - 12/10/00: 1,228,599

Then comes Monster Hunter Portable 2nd, and then Dragon Quest Monsters Joker.

I never really comment much in these threads because I am unsure how they reflect the entire market as a whole.

I do have a question though... no PS3 games in the top 30? Is this unusual for a recently released console?

Is the PS3 in a little bit of trouble in Japan?

No no no. Tabris made it quite clear. it had to be Next gen!

Remember
Next Gen + First week + Third party + (eventually 'Not square') = The best!

Well, I didn't make my post with Tabris in mind actually. :)

Oh, dear. Tabris is going to need to add more qualifiers to his post. :(

It's waaaay early to say, but yeah, at present I would say there is what some might describe as symptoms of hints of signs of a touch of trouble.

The return of Tabris, more posts from Defuser, & tons of damage control from both of them. :lol

So Monster Hunter Portable 2nd is still the best first week selling third party game on a next gen handheld and if we exclude crappy pokemon/card game rip-offs, it's the best first week selling third party game ever on a handheld.

That's very impressive.

That, my friends, is the power of the PSP.

Yugioh is not a Pokemon ripoff.

will people just quit with the stupid 3rd party vs 1st party software sales arguments?

Good games that have good marketing and appeal SELL BIG on ANY console, regardless of the publisher.

Square Enix has a couple million sellers, Namco-Bandai has at least 1 on the DS.

The fact that DS has like 15 million sellers and PSP only 2 only proves that DS is a more viable platform if you want big sales, period. There's no way to spin that.

fellow Gaf-ers, cheesemeister, cvxfreak, hope you could post the 15 million sellers for DS so we could have a clearer picture, thanks and regards

I've been lurking here for a year and a half, and this is the first time it's hit me since the three next gen consoles hit Japan; 360 is in the top thirty, but the PS3 isn't.

Now, surely, the PS3 is beating the pants of the 360 in terms of hardware sales. 20k > 2-4k is what is expected. However, the 360 is actually getting games sold to it's userbase. I mean, I didn't expect Crackdown to chart at all in Japan. What are PS3 owners doing? What are they waiting for? FF13 and... what? DMC4 and MGS4 aren't system sellers from what I've read here on GAF, but FF is, surely. I doubt 1 game will raise the PS3 that much.

Is Gundam out yet? I don't think so, but I don't want to end up with egg on my face. When's the release date for Gundam?

And what will Sony do if it doesn't move units?

Edit: Holy crap, Tabris posts once and 5-6 posts crop up.

Also, why do we exclude games? YDM:4 is a game, crappy or not. Actually, wouldn't demeaning the competition demean yourself?

"Well, if we exclude this crappy game that outsold us..." That sounds kinda bad, if a crappy game is outselling you. Now, if you got outsold by a good game, that's great.

We will be seeing the effects of Gundam in one week's time. If it doesn't move units? Well, I imagine they'll turn off the lights and shut the company down.

Apparently you miss out the gundam thread where DCharlie was posting pics on his HDTV

I wonder what the best second week ever is from a handheld third party release developed by TOSE in a genre that was popular before 1990, not counting companies or games with hyphens in their name.

Aww, come off the hyperbole. Rather than do that, or a price cut of some sort, don't you think they'd try to pump out more games? I mean, stuff like Katamari, something that doesn't have to be epic and take up a ton of resources but something that attracts people to the console. They need the shovelware and cheap games that people buy. The consumer doesn't just buy the big budget titles. Don't forget that there was an audience for Cars: The Game.

Although, something tells me that the current userbase isn't made up of little Timmy who just got a PS3 and loves his CGI movies.

And thanks for responding. :)

And if we exclude non-games, which MHP2 is about to become once it crosses 1 million, we can go back in time and declare Higurashi the best-selling game of this week, even though it's not so much a game as visual novel, but it's still more of a game than a non-game.

Victory!

No, I'm pretty sure they'll just shut it down. Why throw good money after bad, after all?

Indeed. And to define game/non-game for visual novels clearly, the Higurashi game is not the same as the Hotel Dusk non-game as that visual novel fortunately included the unintended gameplay of being able to avoid proceeding the novel by just not talking to people.

You would think that Sony would do something about this but we see no sign of it happening. Many of the small 3rd party JP developers are on board with the Wii and the audience for their games is following. Sony 1st party is not filling in the gaps either.

So with Gundam Musou out next week, what will be the next anticipated hit for PS3 afterwards? Or are we content with the current strategy:

1. Don't worry, something's coming
2. ????
3. Profit!

This thread is awesome. Welcome back, Tabris; you've been missed.

In all seriousness, though, it's an awesome achievement for Capcom, and I'm really glad for them. Also really pleased with the success of Level 5 here, and the nice starts for Fire Emblem and Sim City DS (hopefully EA considers this one a big success when all is said and done so they can keep up this high quality DS development).

Will either be Virtua Tennis 3 or DMC4

When I mentioned Gundam earlier, I was referring to Musou. Thanks for reminding me.

Well, couldn't Sony create small, internal teams to create smaller games? I mean, development costs are one reason why there were/are no small games (a la the 2000series), so they have to fill that gap in until they prove the PS3's worth to the consumer. I think that one of the reasons that PS2 was so successful was because there was always a game to play that appealed to someone.

Well, let's see what Musou will do for the PS3. I have no clue about the history of Gundam in Japan (except for GAFfer comments like "Gundam sells a lot even if it's shit!"), so, what are the expected sales? 50k? 100k? 150k? 200k?

I know the previous Gundam game was terrible, but it managed to sell, didn't it? Although, word of mouth should make repeat customers a bit more wary when purchasing their next Gundam, no?

DMC:4 won't do it. Does VT have a strong following in Japan?

From the looks of it, as everyone is probably fearing, there will be no smash hits until, at the earliest, late 2007. Unless Sony can really pull something off with Gundam Musou, or do a lot of moneyhatting with game publishers, things are really looking grim for Sony during that time gap.

I'm basing this assumption with the release of Big Brain Academy for the Wii. Has there been any release date announced for it? Seems like it's supposed to release somewhere in that time gap. That game is going to really burn a hole in the competition as it's released.

Wrongo, that comment is coming from some Koei bitch, whereas Bandai at least expecting 1 million worldwide.
