Media Create Sales: Week 31, 2014 (Jul 28 - Aug 03)

Why did it bomb anyway? You'd think a MH-clone for kids by Capcom with an anime tie-in on 3DS would be big.

If companies could answer that question, we'd probably see a lot more successes in the kids market.

This isn't the first time that Capcom has tried to create a media franchise around a game for kids and failed, so I guess it's back to the drawing board for them.

I imagine the target audience prefers to just buy Monster Hunter, like how 12 year olds just get CoD instead of T-rated shooters.

Creating the painful need to distinguish between a game technically rated M for mature and one which is legitimately mature and intellectually sophisticated.

My general rule of thumb is that really adult games are found boring by 10 year old boys, rather than secretly tempting and exciting but we just don't allow them to play it. You don't see a lot of kids secretly wishing they could watch Brokeback Mountain or Bridge over the River Kwai, or wishing they could read The Brothers Karamazov, or wishing they could listen to NPR.

Well, for starters, just read the sentence you wrote. That's the most cynical thing I've read in a while. Add to that the fact that there's a heavy toy-gimmick with the property and you've got a recipe for an amazing board meeting.

"We're Capcom, we make games people love, like that Monster Hunter thing! It's big with the people. 3DS is also big with the people, but more so with the little ones. How about we mix the two? Monster Hunter for the kids on 3DS! Why don't we expand our reach and copy that Skylanders thing in the west with an extensive toyline? Then we'll advertise this all in a weekly 22-minute toy commercial and monthly comic! This is genius, nyahahahah!"

it probably didn't go down exactly like that

While I'd like to say parents saw through Capcom's crap, I'm sure they didn't (just look at my tag; my parents clearly didn't). Gaist Crusher's failure is likely due a variety of reasons stemming from marketplace saturation (kids spread over Pokemon/Yokai Watch/Mario/whatever), content quality, and overall appeal.

One does have to question if a "Monster Hunter for kids" is even needed, especially on a platform with the original series. If you look at the successful takes on that style, you'll notice there's different audiences at play. God Eater is for the Monster Hunter fan that likes anime. Toukiden is the Monster Hunter for the crowd that digs Japanese mythology and is either done with the 3DS games, or only owns a PlayStation handheld. While Monster Hunter's gameplay can be a bit intimidating, the games themselves aren't. There's no massive plot to comprehend and the game rewards teamwork.

Did the anime bomb, what about the toy line? I remember seeing some pics of Youkai Watch and Gaist Crush sharing the same shelf.

This is hilarious.

Look, it's not uncommon for companies to focus their titles on a certain platform due to various reasons. Take Level-5 for example. Nearly all of their games are on Nintendo hardware. Does that mean that they hate Sony or Microsoft?
Well if Level 5's 3DS games all failed to break 100k while their Vita titles usually did, then I think we'd have plenty of people questioning their development priorities too.

And from what I gather Level 5 isn't too fond of Microsoft anyway after the TFLO fiasco.

Based on a cursory look, the show never hit the top 10 for weekly anime viewership. I haven't found anything from Bandai boasting about the toys either.

I'm pretty sure Koei Tecmo know their development priorities better than any of us. Do you really think that they'd rather lose money than making games on Nintendo hardware? Seriously? Just a guess, but the reason why Vita is getting more Warriors titles than 3DS is probably simply because they're easier and cheaper to port from PS3, and sales meet their expectations. Just like how 3DS is getting Samurai Warriors: Chronicles 3 because the previous 2 games sold well.

Well, none of us can say for sure. We're on the outside looking in.

But looking at the raw numbers the lack of 3DS Musou support is surprising when it's not far from the Musou sales on Vita, Wii U and PS4 combined. And that's only 3 games to 10. Easier ports are one thing but that didn't seem to keep plenty of PS3 Musou games from still coming to PS2/PSP last gen either. What should be the takeaway when weaker proven markets are handed significantly more support?

Road to TGS™.

Disk Wars Avengers: Ultimate Heroes
Platform: 3DS
Genre: Action-Adventure?
Publisher: Namco Bandai
Developer: Unclear
Special Notes:
-Namco seems to be working quite a bit on licensing Disney stuff lately.

Silent Hills
Platform: I'm... guessing PS4/XB1 with an eventual late PC port?
Genre: Survival Horror
Publisher: Konami
Developer: Kojima Production
Special Notes:
-This is only sort of an announcement. If people feel we should discount it that's fine.
-It's by KojiPro on Fox Engine and done in partnership with Guillermo del Toro
-It's continuing KojiPro's theme of casting Hollywood/TV actors in main roles

There's also a PC port of Metal Gear Solid V though I don't think that's releasing in Japan so I'm leaving that off.

Perhaps devs don't like working with a device comparable to a late 80's pocket calculator?

I mean, if you were a mechanic, you'd rather work on a Lambo than a Lada, wouldn't you?

I'd be pretty shocked if third parties used amiibos.

They have no incentive. The idea is to sell toys that you make.

They don't even need to, they can use the NFC chip if they want to. Actually, that's what Nintendo wants, amiibo is their own stuff after all, but they still want companies to start using the NFC chip instead of their own proprietary portal or whatnot.

By the way, I think there won't be any delay for numbers this week. Looks like Famitsu/4Gamer.net are being updated normally (though that may be because of GamesCom), so I don't think they'll delay the charts.

Isn't it lower than the first game and half of the Vita one, and I don't think this kind of game will have leg.

That's actually 46k, and I believe it's the same as the first 3DS game? Someone will have the number somewhere ;)

Actually, SKB did 52k FW, so it's a slight drop.

Honestly that's a rather poor showing. Worst first week for the series so far and pretty low sell-through compared to the others.

I honestly think Shinovi Versus has changed the trajectory for this series.

Dengeki must be massively undertracking Corpse Party Vita. Being off by 10k usually isn't a big problem, but when your games sell 20k, it kind of is.
