If XIII-2 don't do a million that would be funny as hell.
Got to see how much the PS3 going to sell because of the price drop.
It has few games coming up along with a new color .

I don't think anyone is expecting it to do a million, and I'm talking about combined sales (PS3+360).

Wait.... people are thinking that FFXIII-2 won't break one million LTD ?

are you serious?

a Final Fantasy game in the Holidays season in Japan?

if they didn't buy a FF game, what else they are going to buy?

That doesn't make any sense. If FFXIII-2 didn't do over a million, it would be a pretty major disappointment. Saying that no one is expecting it to do a million would hence be incorrect. For reference, FFXIII sold 1.9 million on the PS3 in Japan. FFXIII-2 would have to literally decline by half or more to fail to sell a million copies. That would make it the worst and largest decline in FF history ever. It would literally be unheard of, if it happens. FFX to FFX-2 dropped from 2.4 million to 1.9 million, for reference.

I think it's one thing to say that you think FFXIII-2 won't hit a million. It's another thing to do a hand wave and say that no one is expecting it to hit a million. Which would be pretty factually inaccurate, given historical sales, and realistic market expectations. Could FFXIII-2 fail that badly? Sure. Is it expected to? No.

I expect it to do a million , the 360 is non factor .
If i remember right X-2 did 2 million plus and even thought XIII did only 1.9 million for it to not get about 50% of it's sales in it's best selling country would be a major blow to SE.

Edit duck says 1.9 million for X-2.

So, any ideas on when or if Nintendo releases the new Wii model in Japan?

Would be the perfect time to drop the price.

Retailer's meeting is suppose to be in early September, should get firm dates for Icarus(some folks believe that we will get firm date in famitsu this week), Just Dance 2, Kirby and perhaps new wii then.

I just hadn't seen anyone say it would do over a million prior to this tread. I stand corrected since you're right and I was including everybody with my expectations.

On the subject of how bad this year currently is. I got the sum of all Famitsu software (that I have, which is weekly, monthly and half-year sales, and any other eventual source) from 1 to 32 for each year:

Code:
Famitsu Software - week 1 to week 32:

1997	28.1
1998	27.3
1999	32.4
2000	26.5
2001	24.1
2002	25.6
2003	24.6
2004	26.9
2005	24.4
2006	37.4
2007	36.7
2008	30.9
2009	27.9
2010	28.1
2011	20.3

Million units.

2011 is the worst year I have on record.

Notes:

- The number that appeared for 1996 is lower actually, 19.5 million, but data for that year isn't as reliable because part of it was using the points system.
- 2011 has been a year without any leaks, with not even monthly top 20/10 for every month, which means we have a little less information compared to other years.
- There might exist typing errors in my database...
- I hope I did the query right...

That's pretty eye opening but not totally unexpected. Nintendo has totally dropped the ball this year in terms of Wii support and Sony has also had a rough year for several reasons. Coupled with the Tsunami and earthquake you really have a lot of factors that have worked together to depress the market in Japan.

predictions!

[PSP] Mobile Suit Gundam: New Giren's Ambition (Bandai Namco) - 65,656
[PSP] Black Star Rock Shooter: The Game (Image Epoch) - 115,511
[PS3] Monster Hunter Freedom 3 HD Ver. (Capcom) - 232,123
[PS3] Samurai Warriors 3: Empires (Koei Tecmo) - 56,565

and if we're pie in the sky-ing FFXIII-2, I say 1.5m 360+PS3 lifetime.

Add in the fact that this is the year where we have really started to see the major game companies fully embrace and have a large part of thier profits come from Digital games(cell phone/social networking)

If you take a look at gree and Dena's record breaking sales this year, look at Konami's highest grossing profit game product being a game on Mobage. Hope you can see the gaming industry in Japan isn't as bleak as just thoese numbers make it out to be.

This is bad.
But I don't think it is somehow connected to a Japanese videogame industry crisis. Surely there were some external problems (the earthquakes, global financial crisis, and so on), but this year tailors a transition where the successor of DS is released, and the same will happen for PSP, while Wii is on decline, PS3 is not so bad but cannot reach PS2-levels and 360 is obviously dead. Moreover, there are not important releases as last year, when they were a main Pokémon, a main Monster Hunter Portable, Wii Party, two Dragon Quest, the third Inazuma Eleven, and some important games continuing to sell as Tomodachi and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

I believe it is mostly due to a decline in major releases on platforms in the first half of the year. Nintendo has almost all of its major releases scheduled for 4th quarter, Xillia and XIII-2 and Type 0, biggest titles hitting their respective platforms by a large margin, are also scheduled for 4th quarter. Also I believe EQ effect will disappear by the end of year.

I agree with you and walking field.
It's a transition year, where N has also slated almost all of its great games in the last part of the year, both for 3DS and Wii, PS3 is doing good but it is not PS2, 360 is dead... and PSP is doing very well, but it is not the DS of 2006 - 2007 because it hasn't the games to be something similar.

From now until the end of the year, we'll have

MHP3rd HD
Xillia
SRT OG2
FF XIII-2
Dragon Ball
FF Type 0
AKB 2
Naruto
One Piece GB 2
New Love Plus
Inazuma Eleven Go
Kid Icarus
Super Mario
Mario Kart
Slime Mori Mori
DQ Collection
Itadaki Street
Kirby
Zelda SS

And Vita's launch

Market will inevitably rise this Holiday, and the rise will continue at least for the beginning of next year, thanks to Vita's performance and 3DS continuing doing well thanks to the upcoming lineup.

It will be seen as a main FF, and as such despite how shitty it could be, it is likely to do more than 1 million IMO.

Since we started with rumors these are the rumored Nintendo Japanese release dates:

Just Dance 2: Late September
Kid Icarus: Oct 10
Kirby Wii: Late October/early November

Kid Icarus release date might be revealed at Weekly Famitsu.

I'm still wondering what took Nintendo so long to release Just Dance in Japan. Unless they're adding new songs for Japanese audience (which obviously isn't the case), there isn't much translation work to do and the Wii seriously needed software a few months ago.

Wii already has some decent software, esp first party wise, in Japan this summer.

The only Nintendo Wii titles at first 6 months were Last Story in January and Pandora's Tower in May. Nintendo uses to have a stronger second half but this time they completely abandoned at first half the system without having the big holiday title that could drive hardware.

It was extremely weak pre-summer, even GC had better support at the time...

But from June, we had
GoldenEye*
Wii Play: Motion*
Inazuma Eleven Strikers
Rhythm Heaven*
Epic Mickey*
Family Fishing
(* first party publish, although not all developed by Nintendo)

At least this is a healthier release schedule, not acting like a dead system (if it is not already)
And did sell some copies (prediction: >500k - 1, >200k - 1, >100k - 2, rest are ~50k)

DQX isn't out this year.

If MHP3HD Vita is really only an visual updated version it won't do many things.

[PS3] Monster Hunter Freedom 3 HD Ver. (Capcom) - 187k
[PS3] Samurai Warriors 3: Empires (Koei Tecmo) - 57k

All these games combined won't match last year's Pokemon and Monster Hunter and we are already down a lot.
I expect 3DS to reach (over) 4 million by the end of year and it will move a lot of software. Also Vita will probably launch this holiday as well.

For the 3DS to reach over 4 million within 2011, it would have to sell about 139k in average for the next 18 weeks. The 3DS would have to have an amazing holiday season to achieve that i think.

It would be disappointing if 3DS dropped below 100k during last weel

I think we'll see something like 60k as minimum and 80k as maximum
This because last week was the one after Obon, so with the Holiday effect over...and with no games at all.
Certainly, if it does 100k, better!

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

I think they choose that agressvive price point to achieve those big holiday sales... everything else just wont cut it - especially with vita bein about to bein released.

Yeah. 3 million might be realistic, though.

True, but i think it would be a really amazing holiday period to achieve over 4 million units by the end of 2011. We're probably looking at around 1 million units sold in December alone to be able to reach 4 million units. And i think that the PS Vita will also eat a bit into the 3DS sales.

Yep, i'm confident that the 3DS will reach 3 million units sold by 2011 in Japan :)

Yikes, looks like some low debuts for Growlanser IV and Neptunia MK2....

Zelda rising is strange, but probably it is due to the fact it COULD have had a week not so lower than the precedent, and due to a general post Obon fall, it grew on charts while decreased in mere units sold.

It's not really strange, this week is obviously slower than the last one and since Zelda is the most popular 3DS game yet it profits the most from the price-cut. It would be worrisome if it didn't stay as high on the charts.
