Ah, thanks. That's neat. The first Inazuma Eleven started at 41k and ended up breaking 400k. The market has changed and I doubt YW is going to have the same legs, especially with Pokémon cutting into them, but this might be a new franchise for L-5. I wonder how much the anime is going to push sales.

Makes more sense. I'm pretty sure it is an algorithm, so they may have just had an influx of used games, so fluctuation. It would be worrying if it stayed at ¥400. Reviews can be ignored.

Regarding Youkai Watch: I think word-of-mouth is probably more significant in Japan than in the West (not that it can't still be valuable in the West because it can and is), and it is a good game playing like a Pokémon meets Earthbound with cute ghosts.

Regarding Amazon: if it's anything like Amazon UK then you don't even need to buy the product to rate it 1 star and write a shitty review. Plus some people that do actually buy the products are idiots such as Layton 3D getting 1 star because "it doesn't play on my son's DS".

Amazon is not so important in terms of sales (in a M-C thread), imagine how important it is for review stars LOL
MH4 will not bomb, but I firmly believe that MHP3 records will still be set in stone
Yokai watch and Fantasy life are two new precious IPs for L5

The legs for Yokai Watch are really good, but I think the real test will be what Level5 does with the franchise moving forward. Even if the game keeps selling, it's probably only going to hit 300k+ eventually at best. Good for a new IP, especially given how Level5's other franchises have suffered, but building off the word of mouth and the launch of the TV series next year is going to be vital. The next entry has to do much better, similar to how Inazuma really took off with the second entry.

You are right.
Even if we should also remember that IE was the first RPG new IP to hit the million mark in..what, more than a decade?
I think that even a smaller success would still be a success (of course if the second will sell as the first, after the anime release something will be wrong)

Also, for Youkai Watch, After pokemon, it should drop, but I think that when the Anime will start, we should see a bump in it's sales. Could be interesting.

Arg, I really want to play that game!

How is said price set, anyway? Is it possible that Capcom/Nintendo have offered favourable terms to Amazon if they keep the tradein value low for a few weeks?

I have never seen such a low trade-in value for a game upon release. For reference, most games that are in demand are offered for trade-in value up to or even over their MSRP in the first week of release, unless there are mass trade-ins. Even today, popular Nintendo 3DS games command trade-in values upwards of 2000 yen, months or even years after their release.

Could this be a sign that the used market will be flooded this week, which might in turn affect sales of new copies?

Thinking about it, placing the anime in 2014 wasn't such a stupid idea. Pokémon will probably dominate the next few months so it's probably better to wait it out until it has died off at least a little bit.

It is a bit of a shame that even if they manage to replicate their success they had with Layton/Inazuma Eleven, its chances in the West are fairly low. Layton was pretty big and IE sold over 2m across the first two generations and the Wii game. Nintendo will never publish it as it'd compete with Pokémon and Namco Bandai... well, it's been over 5 years since the last Digimon game in North America or Europe.

IE anime was released after the first videogame was out.
That game sold 40k at the debut, than the anime hit later and it was able to spike up to 400k or something like that

What do you guys think about the sales potential of the Vita TV? Buzz seems to be pretty big from what I heard.

Barring supply constraints, at least 150k first week seems a lock, no? The last few console launches (3DS, Vita, Wii U) were around 300k, and the 3DS XL sold around 200k.

At that impulse buy price, it's bound to sell well at least in its first week.

Now that more reviews are flooding in, that 3-star ranking for Monster Hunter 4 on Amazon has now been bumped up to a 3.5-star one.

Can't speak to historical norms, but when a game is about to put a million or more copies on the market over a couple of days and grow heavily from there, it's probably a wise idea to keep a trade-in price low at first to prevent a 100,000 people trading it in at once and sucking out tons of money. Once things have died down and a more predictable pattern emerges for trade-ins, then it'd be safe to raise the price to more reasonable levels. Just had to get through the initial surge, in case tons of people wanted to trade back in the game initially (e.g. if the game was just really bad and then Amazon would be stuck with a lot of traded in copies of a bad game).

Actually, download codes definitely count. You can tell because those games Club Nintendo offers every month always shoot up in the rankings when they're made available. Same happened with the games which were offered as Gold/Platinum prizes in July/August.

There are CoroCoro scans out mentioning a new Youkai Watch is in development for 3DS.

They don't show or say overly much else to my knowledge, but I can't read Japanese.
