Media Create Sales: Week 38, 2014 (Sep 15 - Sep 21)

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Is there any reason why in-house developers would be payed less? Or be more cost efficient than an external developer.

It all depends on how the contract was built to be honest:

Does the developer receive proceeds from the sales of the title?
Does the developer receive a bonus when the software title reaches a certain threshold, either critical or commercial success?

Developing the title in-house such as Yakuza provides Sega the opportunity to recoup and control developments costs much easier, keep their developers in-house on a payroll and use them to the benefit of the company, and much more.

Whatever it takes to pay the bills and keep the real version afloat.

:p

I think it was a smart decision to develop the two titles simultaneously, a console and handheld offering.

One might see more offerings like Smash Bros moving forward, and judging by Nintendo's comments at their IR meetings, this is the strategy that they will be employing for their next generation hardware - it's exciting.

So what's up with the low Bayo sales? Is it due to smash cannibalizing everything, Wii U selling poorly, lack of advertisement, or are people still PO'ed cause it's on a Nintendo system?

Or is it some weird combination of a multitude of factors?

There are relatively few platinum games diehard fans who would buy a console just to play bayo.
Being on a console with a small install base and not much of an action games library in general gives them fewer casual action game fans to sell to.

Indeed. I think a smart strategy would be, if possible, to have some or all games playable on both handheld and console systems. Japan may never go back to consoles and the West may never go back to handhelds, so it could potentially be a smart decision to be able to sell the same game on 2 systems. Certainly, it should free up some development staff, too, since there'd be potentially no need to develop 2 versions of Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, etc.

Of course, I think they're talking about sharing engines/code/assests more easily between handheld & console, which I suppose is still a good idea.

Lack of/missing audience for these kinds of games on Nintendo's console.
Lauched on a toxic console.

So a Vita phone or will flop too so why some people think a Vita phone or Vita tablet will sell well

It's not so much that we have any sales expectations, but it's seemingly better than how Sony is treating the Vita today and might force them into doing something. If Sony doesn't try to change the Playstation Portable line into something different, we will never see another Sony portable gaming handheld.

Not that I think we will see another dedicated handheld from anyone, but modern convergence devices are what gamers and general populace are looking for, and Nintendo and Sony missed the memo and tried to force their ecosystem on people and looking at sales, it didn't work.

... has anyone mentioned that bayonetta 2 launched on the 20th? having only 2 days worth of sales data? next week might give a better idea of its status.

As one of the Biggest Ninja Gaiden fans on this board, fucking lol.

People are only trying to find the good in that game because its exclusive.

It lookeds like a warmed tossed salad with a side helping of sweet infested shit.

Itakagi should be ashamed of himself.

That said, I see my WiiU as enough as a sunk cost that I see no reason to bother selling it. Once im bored with Bayo 2 (which hopefully wont be for a good year yet) ill just hand my WiiU down to some kid in the family. Its still an extremely good "My first console"

I can't believe how bad it looks now. If someone would have told me that devils third would look worse then NG3 I would have laughed in their faces. I hope Its much better then it looks.

I watched a CM for Fatal Frame right now on Yamanote
I never saw such a thing for Bayo2 last week

Probably the difference is that nintendo owns the FF IP now? (Or it is still a KT brand?)

CM = commercial? Mpl posted the #s earlier for FF2 Wii. It was at 24pts at comgnet at the end. He had no numbers for FF4.

Also for those of you in Japan, How big/small are the FF movie/manga projects? Like is the movie more of a "straight to DVD" type? A big budget Japanese movie type? Just wondering.

This is basically a meme at this point.
No, this means basically nothing for sales. Instead of a 80% drop you might see a 76% drop next week or something, an extra day or two would've made basically no difference.

Well for one, they're not increasing the the life span of the Wii U, rather you're arguing that they should shorten it, big difference. Supporting your fanbase is always a far better idea than dropping them, just look at all the previous consoles which were prematurely killed without a good selling point in their successors.

I'm pretty sure everyone is trying to create a product with a broader market appeal, its just not that simple and it takes time. You're really pushing hard for a quick Wii U death when you know yourself its probably the biggest mistake Nintendo could make without a proper follow-up in order. We already know what Nintendo's plans are for the near future, they have bigger worries to tackle and simply putting out a successor right now won't fix any of that until they have everything they need to push forward with their plans.

If the Wii U was expected to die early, Nintendo would have dropped the price already by now, but they learnt their lesson with the GC, where dropping the price proved futile, they're still gonna be selling to the same fanbase so why not ride out the gen with a $300 console rather than a $100 one.
When we have talk of launches in 2017, or 2018 even, presumably holiday, then we are for all intents and purposes talking about trying to beat a dead donkey into walking another mile. I'm not arguing they shorten any life cycle, it's doing that on its own.

And I'm not necessarily pushing for a quick Wii U death. I think how long the Wii U has or hasn't been on the market should be largely irrelevant to a successor launch, as opposed to the idea that it must be on the market for so and so years before its achieved some sort of benchmark lifetime that will make the few people who bought it secure.

If they have a more marketable home console product now they should release it now. If they have it in 2015 they should release it then. If 2016, then 2016. And so on.

But I'm also of the opinion that leaving it too long ie suggestions of 2017 and beyond is untenable due to the external environment. It will be selling like the Vita ie the end of Sony's foray into handhelds. And if Sony were going to launch a new handheld in their folly, then they should have already done it by now.

One of the few possible factors that may play into Wii U sales in the future is the price of the console. It's had the exact same entry price since launch and is higher priced than every nintendo console before it if I'm not mistaken (at least more expensive than the N64, GC, & Wii). Both the N64 & GC had received price cuts by this point (GC was even $99 at around this time), and maybe if Nintendo could get the initial stock sold and the price of manufacturing new consoles down somehow (or just take the hit on profits), they could theoretically lower the price multiple times.

Also in the scenario that this Fatal Frame V is the best selling title in the series (let's 80K thanks to the movie, the GamePad being a good fit for the camera, etc.), it's starting to creep towards Silent Hill PS2 era sales in Japan (SH2 - 126K, SH3 - 96K, SH4 - 67K, which FF has already passed). Actually I'm kind of surprised at how small a series Silent Hill was in Japan. Was it much bigger in the West or something?

Yeah, it's kind of weird. I guess they really don't want to lose any money. Still, not selling anything is losing a lot of money.

I was looking at a bunch of old MC threads recently. From the 3DS launch and when it was really faltering. When it got it's price drop, Star Fox, OoT, new colors, all somewhat near each other is when it took off and didn't come down for a while.

Obviously, this wouldn't happen with the Wii U. But momentum can have an effect. Who knows, a price cut with colors and some games could push the Wii U baseline to a staggering

Mk64 sold more than Mario64?

What's Pokemon Stadium 3? Is it Japan only. Or was Stadium 1 Japan only?

Wind Waker was that close to Sunshine? wat...

Wow Mario Party domination.
And it's taken over 2 years for Wii U to get a Mario Party when it used to be an annual franchise pretty much.

EDIT:
Lego City had a nice LTD compared to it's FW. Sheesh

Wonder why Mario Tennis declined so much from 64-GC

Paper Mario declined but was pretty close.

I wonder how long it will take for Super Smash Bros. 3DS to overtake the sales of Brawl in Japan.

About 1M to go and it has the new 3DS and the holidays to help? It has a pretty good chance, especially since apparently there's still a ton of demand for the game. We don't have DL numbers either.

Yeah, it's kind of weird. I guess they really don't want to lose any money. Still, not selling anything is losing a lot of money.

I thought lowering retail price without clearing out their stock damages them much worse than rather not selling them quickly. I'm no account expert so someone correct me if I'm mistaken.

Yokai Watch 2 is insane, damn. It'll cruise through 3 million with no problem. I wonder if it can really become a franchise consistently putting out these crazy numbers in Japan.

What's Pokemon Stadium 3? Is it Japan only. Or was Stadium 1 Japan only?

Yeah, the first Pocket Monsters Stadium was Japan only. Japan's Pokemon Stadium 2 is Pokemon Stadium in the west, and Japan's Pokemon Stadium Gold Silver is Pokemon Stadium 2 in the west.

There wasn't anything port-begging about duckroll's post. It's a statement of reality.

Good grief at the degree of cray cray defensiveness.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
If total is what you wish, i'll give you retail and digital total (July + August)

[3DS] Kirby Fighters Z <FTG> (Nintendo) {2014.07.23} (¥810) - 11.586 (43.684) / 55.270

I'm pretty surprised by Kirby Fighters Z numbers, despite Kirby being a pretty good brand, saleswise. It's just a Kirby: Triple Deluxe's mode, with some improvements, priced 810 Yen, and it sells over 50,000 units in two months. Dedede's rhythm game doesn't seem to have found success, though.

I suppose we're going to see specific game modes in Kirby games being sold separately a few months after the main game launched again in the future. I wonder if Nintendo could extend such a policy to other titles presenting intriguing special modes that could be separate low priced digital titles.

how is that port begging lol

Me saying Xenobalde X will do better on PS3 is not port begging either. Its a recognition that the WiiU does not have the audience/install base to support such genre's nearly as well other platforms.

This is true. There are some IPs that are a better fit on Sony platforms (Gundam, Tales of), and other that are a better fit on Nintendo platforms (Dragon Quest, Harvest Moon).
