That is tricky. If they decide to go back to the download quest model for a Switch version, it is going to be extraordinarily difficult to justify continuing one's support for the PS4 version if you can get the Switch version and get all of the future content for free.
If they opted to charge for those quests, or even straight up kept the format the same by "encouraging" a constant online connection, I think you'll find a lot of players rejecting that as it runs counter to the pick up and play nature of the game.
In either event, a separate line might be the only reasonable way to handle it, but even then, you have to figure that with the gap between the Switch and PS4 being so much smaller than what would have happened if they tried this last gen, you still run right into a similar issue in the first point.
Interesting stuff to consider, and I fully expect Capcom to fuck it up royally.
The kick in the nuts to fans is that half of the new characters made for the game are locked behind DLC. Capcom made ten new characters and locked five of them behind DLC.
You do not announce that you have that many characters planned in advance for DLC, you're supposed to trickle it out so that consumers don't get wise about you milking them.
Nintendo didn't announce how many Smash Bros DLC characters would be available, at launch they only announced one and it was a returning character: Mewtwo. There was more to come but people had no idea aside from the leak of Ryu that they'd get Cloud, Corrin, Roy and Bayonetta (from the choose your character poll.)
If I remember correctly, Sakurai himself stated that the DLC characters were developed after the game released, so they had nothing to announce. Even though we can't know for sure, I'm inclined to believe him, especially considering the ballot.
At the end of the day the pricing wasn't that good, but it was the opposite approach to what Capcom is doing with MvC:I. From an external point of view (not a fan of the genre or this game in particular) it seems like the PR was mishandled since the start.
But then they're not capturing all potential markets, and then they have to be running two concurrent MH series, which seems to fly in the face of their decision of a multiplat MHW.
The GaaS model would have to be a really strong model to make up for lost unit sales IMO. I'm not sure Switch/Japan/The Portable team would figure into that model either
That's a real delicate balance they'd have to strike there.
Considering they do 80% or more return sales on the G rank games at full price they'd have to find some way to seriously monetize the game without driving everyone away that would be worth more/cost less to produce than that.
Nintendo can own Japan without Capcom and MH as the Switch is showing....i can see them working with other partners to fill that MH void and i expect announcements early 2018.
This isn't going to happen. They already have a Monster Hunter game on their platform and will continue to receive Monster Hunter games for the foreseeable future. They have absolutely no reason to shop around and partner with other third parties to fill a void that doesn't even exist, with games that won't sell anything close to what Monster Hunter sells anyway.

But that's what we are all assuming, that they are making a portable version, for some reason instead of just porting MHW which we would know by now if they were but there's been no word and even more so when they decided to be at Sony's presser at tgs

Even Capcom isn't dumb enough to announce a version of a game on a system people actually like in Japan with the feature they want to play the game before actually releasing the version due out in a few months.

While I think Switch will see more MH games in the future, XX being on the Switch does not guarantee that, and we are talking about Capcom, which is on a surprisingly successful run of blunders as of recent.
I think if you're a Monster Hunter fan living in Japan and own a Switch, you're going to be just fine, though not for awhile.
I think if you're a Monster Hunter fan living in the west and own a Switch, I'd probably be a bit wary of the future.
My guess is Monster Hunter on Switch will receive little to no western support from Capcom. It will not launch globally on day one, Nintendo will handle marketing, and they may even be the publisher outside of Japan.
I think Monster Hunter World + its DLC and expansions will be Capcom USA's priority for the foreseeable future.
Nintendo doesn't need Monster Hunter. They own every monster franchise in Japan literally besides Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter. Like if anybody could ever afford to just not court a major third party franchise it's Nintendo. But like why wouldn't they try to have it all? Why let it slip away when its mutually beneficial? Sounds more like fanboy dreams than reality honesty.

It's just like the original ds,it didn't even need monster hunter to sell over 30 million consoles.Nintendo's entire first party Ips alone are more than enough
Wonder if Nintendo will invest in some casual friendly IPs like Nintendo or Brain Training

Its actually not a terrible idea, the 2+ million gamers in Japan who bought 4U/X but won't be buying World aren't all going to cease to exist overnight, after all.
Its not even a case of needing to shop around, there's a definite vacuum on the co-op hunting (or just general co-op action) genre on the system since the only current feed on it is a low-effort port that got more marketing from Nintendo than it did from Capcom.
And for a system like the Switch which Nintendo has been pushing hard for that co-op action (the verb, not the genre), finding a game to fill that void makes fairly logical sense. If Capcom's offering on the genre/hole won't show up for a year or more (and if Nintendo was well aware of this years in advance), you could conceivably see a new project fill that void. And it could come around fairly quickly.
Hell, for as little as we know of Retro's project, *it* could be a MH clone where you kill monsters to make steaks!
Realistically, a new MH won't (and really can't) show up on the Switch until 2019. If it shows up in 2018, it undermines the notion of GaaS/long-term revenue tail on World. That's 9-moths of 2017, 12 moths of 2018, and X months of 2019. That's an enormous vacuum of time on a very software-hungry system with a good forward momentum (and also a good amount of time for you to lose your entire unserved audience but that's a problem for Capcom) on a product (and given sales trends, audience) that *loves* this type of co-op game. If you're a project manager either for Nintendo or a third-party, that's a very hot underserved market that you know existed as late as just last year (X/Generations). Why wouldn't you want to try and tap it or, in Nintendo's case, try to tap it and not have to deal with Capcom?
I think this actually a *prime* opportunity for someone to eat Capcom's lunch for a market they've seemingly taken for granted. This is the first time that we'll have a situation where it isn't a "clone" on console vs. an active and successful MH audience on handheld, but a MH on console and a potential "clone" on a handheld with 2+ million of the aforementioned active audience completely unserved for XY months.
Man I was bored reading pages and pages of Monster Hunter shitstorm again and again so I skipped straight from page 7 to this one and it's still not over?
Would be nice a to have a filter that automatically removed every post Monster Hunter related once you click on it.
There is no need for a monster hunter clone either, all Nintendo needs to do right now is to swallow that empty coop action rpg hole right now and that's it

Who is saying anything about shopping around? Or do you think Nintendo had to pay for Octopath or SMT announcements? Switch is the future of the portable market and balling. Ever publisher that has a MH type title in works will likely be in talks to Nintendo and talk about the business side like how and when to best launch the game if they care for that market.
Not even talking about exclusivity but when titles like Godeater 3 hit on Switch that's likely where the marketing focus will be. I still hope to see a FF Explorers type game from SE for the Switch with a higher budget.
All other players won't just wait until Capcom decides to bring a game to Switch...as said you will see announcements as early as next year regarding this market.

I don't think GE3 will be on switch,it's too late for Bamco to do anything right now. There could be a coop action rpg that eat that piece of the cake that capcom left on the table, but it doesn't have to be a hunting game

The only remaining Hunting Action games were already moving to the PS4. They will only be bolstered by the market leader doing the same. God Eater would never have it's marketing focus on Switch, even if it did release there.

You said that you think they will work with 3rd parties to fill the void. Hunting action games in development in Japan will likely end up on Switch given the system that it is, but Nintendo has no reason to proactively partner with third parties to "fill a void" left by a franchise that will see releases on the Switch for years to come. Why? Because Nintendo knows that Monster Hunter still has a future on the Switch, even if their fans don't just yet.

Heh, 2019 isn't that far away. Unless something is in development already, no developer is going to spot that void on the Switch now and begin developing a game that will release before the next Monster Hunter Switch title. Given that timescale, I still see no need for Nintendo to partner with anyone, especially considering how many of you keep saying that Nintendo doesn't need Monster Hunter to be successful. Third parties will try and take advantage of this gap with games that are maybe already in development, but Nintendo has zero need to do anything other than keep doing what they're doing until the next MH game for Switch hits.
