Then you should take the place of whoever wrote that article instead of wearing the PlayStation hat in a forum

Whoever wrote that article doesn't understand balance sheets either. So don't feel too bad

Come the fuck on. Do you seriously believe they converted all their marketable securities into cash to put into an M&A budget? And if they did do that, it would still be in their balance sheet. Use some common sense

Whats with these fanfictions of "show of power to show they're still boss" or "desperate defensive purchases in response to MS".

They want in on the GAAS business, and Bungie will be able to help them with that. Its not rocket science. And them being able to use the Destiny IP to their advantage is also a good plus.

If anything it was a response to Microsoft wanting Bungie to keep making more Halo when they didn't want to, and Sony have said "come make whatever you want here" (edit: as long as it's a GAAS).

Which, weirdly, seems to be more MS's approach now with their shitzillion studios.
Say what now?

Bungie was let go from Xbox in 2007, almost 15 years ago… how has this got anything to do with current day Xbox?

That and Bungie claimed to want to be an independent studio just a year or two ago after splitting from Activision and then sell themselves to Sony. This is definitely a reaction to the Bethesda deal and Sony’s need in general for a good FPS studio.

I don't understand why everyone and their mother suddenly push themselves on the pc.
Now.... of all times that pc gaming is impossible to get into. The hardware market is fucked and it will not get better. But pc is growing... I just have a hard time understanding how it happens.
Are higher prices making it look more... luxurious or what

In terms of what?

Destiny 2 is on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

Halo Infinite is currently sitting at #5 on the most played Xbox games list while Destiny 2 is #10
Halo is not on PlayStation, but Destiny 2 is.

Destiny 2 averaged around 53k players on Steam within the past 30 days while Halo Infinite only averaged 23k

At this point, Destiny 2 is currently the biggest shooter between the two.
2021 was the best year for Destiny 2 as well

Yeah but Ms have Cod (all of them) Halo, Doom, Wolfenstein ,Quake and pretty much all the most famous fps ever created...I don't think Destiny can put them in any way in trouble

5 years behind?
Maybe consoles are weaker with raw gpu power but right now pc don't even have direct IO storage like ps5 have. NVME drives are not utilized.
And I bet most developers would prefer to work for locked hardware anyway

I am talking of the past when Halo 2 and 3 dominated all console shooters.

I still chuckle at posts like this.

It's like these companies sit in front of a TV channel or gaming forum waiting for something to happen then open their wallets and go developer shopping.

These deals or acquisitions are months if years in the making.

Rare to come across a bit logic in these types of threads.

Can add in these deals don't happen over night as well.
I wouldn’t be so sure of that, the rumour is that the Xbox/Activision deal on started talks in November 2021 and was announced by the end of January so you’re probably talking just as much shit as everyone else.

“These deals are months of years in the making” said a non-expert to other non-experts in multi-billion dollar acquisitions.

Sony went all in on SP games. They thought COD was untouchable. Until that $7.5b on bethesda. Then $70b drop on Activision brought them to reality.

While the deal was 5-6 month in the making, bethesda purchase made them aware of the MS spending power, and that one day, games like COD could disappear from their system.

Now they have bungie to make FPS games for them. This will help them fill the hole of COD.

Duh, PC is who benefits the most here, all those Sony and MS IPs that were locked behind their plastic boxes and their pathetic 30FPS are now coming to PC, very soon there really will be little to no point in getting a console.
Stuff like destiny or literally any activision blizzard games was never gated by plastic consoles, in the case of blizzard pc was the main platform mostly, but now that they own these companies they can decide to postpone the release on pc to gain more money on console first and hoping for people to double dip, maybe not M because they have gamepass pc, but sony can actually do that.

Also if M doesn't put their games on steam for whatever reason, you would be forced to use their super shitty and broken store...

Pc gaming is not doomed but them acquiring those studios may actually be negative for pc players in a way.

Moderated wildly
Lots of hand waiving about the developer who made Xbox what it is

Its called having the best of the best developers on board. Quite simple. Bungies next IP will be another GOTY calibre title which you can only enjoy on Playstation or PC a few years later
Did destiny 1 win game of the year? I thought it got more or less average scores with a lot of issues about the actual campaign and light levels at launch. I bought it and played through the campaign and never played it again, until the botch king or something came out and I did one raid and completed it and never played it again.

not my cup of tea from Bungie at all, but if they did something as amazing as halo 3 then I’m all aboard the hype train.

Meh that doesn't mean much. I like Paul Tassi but it's just an opinion article. The height of destiny 2 was forsaken it saved the franchise and the amount of content was staggering so much so that Bungie even conceded that they'd never make something to that scale ever again. Also had the last wish raid which is considered by most to be the Pinnacle day 1 raid experience of all time.

I can see them buying ubisoft, or something cheaper. Definitely not more expensive.

Ubisoft will be a killer get! I love Ubisoft games.

RB6 (successful tactical shooter), The Crew (arcade racer), AC (well-established 3rd person action game), Ghost Recon (another IP that could be setup right to its better days), For Honor (successful tactical melee fighting online game), and let's not forget PoP and much more.

yeah some of you better brace for impact. not just for ps, ms as well.

This seems more a PR move, to keep playstation fans happy that sony are not out the fight.

But when we are talking about $3.6bill (600devs) vs $69 bill(5000devs) its hardly the epic counter punch.

Ms have spent this much, they might aswell seal there fait and go for EA or Take 2.
Sony will probably snap up kojima, square and konami and that will be that.
Sony will have to settle for being number 2 (in terms of content) which I think wont be a problem for them.

Microsoft's acquisition of Activision-Blizzard was almost 20x larger than the Bungie purchase. In addition they bought Bethesda/Zenimax for about 2x the value of Bungie last year. On top of that, Microsoft apparently turned down an offer Bungie first made to them to buy them and then Bungie approached Sony.

Most of that is for shitty mobile games tbh. Outside of COD. They make most of their money from Mobile games.

1. Why can't they do both? Just because you can't do more than one thing at once doesn't mean it's not being worked on.
2. They already stated it's coming
3. Will never happen
4. Literally don't know what the fuck this means. xd
#4 is like if you buy the far cry 6 ps4 version you can automatically upgrade it to the ps5 version with the inherent enhancements. I bought the disc for PS4 and upgraded for free. PS4 version was $30 for the disc instead of $70 for the ps5 digital.

For my tastes, Capcom would easily be the most attractive option. RE and MH are bigger than ever, DMC5 did well, SFVI could do well. I think it’s a bit of a bargain for only a few billion.

As an xbox owner, the Bungie acquisition didn't bother me in the slightest. Boy would Xbox lose alot with a Capcom purchase though. I love all those games.

ahaha poor Bo ..I bet after Ms 75b he's still excited about how Sony is crushing them hahaha

Yeah, the "Xbox bad cos they buy pubs, but sony good cos they grow organically" was so cringe.

I wonder what fighting talk people will use next.

Maybe.

destiny took an immense amount of time to turn their problem into something good. There are developers out there that launch an fps x20 times more successful every year...Give those devs 2 / 2.5 years cycle and will embarass every other fps developer around the world. Including the very numerous 343i

I don't mind that Sega is buying Google Stadia. But Probe (makers of Mortal Kombat 1 on Genesis) buying Tesla is a bit strange. I will let this Grub guy iron out the details.

I would like to believe it was strategic because they don’t have a good fps and bungie was a free agent.
But I think it was more of a stock push than anything.

I hope amazon or google dont buy EA or take 2,capcom etc and make there content exclusive to the streaming services (stadia/luna)

Crazy day. A lot to unpack. I think we're all trying to make sense of this so let's put our business minds together.

Event: Sony buys Bungie but only under the strict stipulation that Bungie will still make multiplats.

Was this done defensively to prevent MS from getting there first?

Or is this a show of power saying we can throw billions around and intend to do it again..... Back off.

People saying this was not reactionary and the deal was being discussed for months I have two questions:

1. Why did they decide to pull the trigger now?
2. Did the Zenimax purchase initate this if not the Activision purchase?
I cannot interpret it as a reaction based on the stated premise of creating multiple live service titles, and leaving it to Bungie to keep self publishing as they see fit on whichever platforms they wish. This was certainly not a reaction to the Acti-Blizzard deal.

As for why announce now? If the deal was only finalized recently, then it would make sense. What would it serve to wait. I don’t believe they finalized before this and decided to wait for some unknown to happen by MS and I go.. ah ha!! Got ya too!

I don't see how that's relevant.

Why would it matter if they're all among the most popular FPS ever created? What matters is how they're doing now.

Quake Champions wasn't successful. The new Wolfenstein didn't sell that well at all. So as of right now, it doesn't matter if they're all the most famous.

I know, that's why I said "if anything", I don't believe it's actually related to MS. As you say, Sony need a GAAS and an FPS and this pickup made the most sense to achieve both.

on wrpg and fps genre Sony also after this acquisition doesn't handle a candle against Ms lineup there's nothing wrong about that ..their main genre is TPA/TPS

After AB acquisition, EA wouldn't be crazy, they must be cheap right now but it would make MS kinda packed out with so many studios and IPs.

Whatever makes you sleep at night. It was bought to share expertise on FPS and GAAS so we don't have more failed GAAS launches like Destruction Allstars (since improved in a recent update). I believe as long as Bungie keeps it multiplatform who gives a shit.

I believe it was their decisive push into FPS/MTX/GAAS business. It won't be just Destiny, but new Bungie IP, Bungie is growing from already huge amount of devs to 1000 devs and will be lending their expertise to other studios on GAAS/MP shooter front. Sony is trying to achieve that with their other studios as well but we all know it's easier said than done, many MPs fail to catch on and die young. Now they have a whole arm they can grow, while building IPs reach through TV, cartoons, etc.

Same reason they tried to buy Leyou (sp?) thing.

ETA: also, fanboys on twitter know jackshit about details of acquisition talks, I'm sure.

What's next? You're going to say they have RTS games even though the genre is practically dead?

We were talking about Destiny and you're just decided to go into a different direction because I said Destiny is currently being played more than Halo.

Just give it up, dude. lol

Neither and I doubt it works like that, they qre playing their own strategy, Sony can't compete with MS in the 'purchase' area.
