Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater pre-release thread

I hope IGN post their video review soon.

Ign will give it a bad review. Their editors are dumbasses.

I really don't care about the reviews anyway. I don't wanna spoil anything, JUST WANT THE GAME NOW! >_<

I hope IGN's is really bad, just to see the backlash on these boards.

I can't wait to pick up this game and MP2:E next week. I'll probably pick them up after work on Friday. =)

I hope Ivan reviews it
He confirmed he will not review it.

Which I'm not really sure will help the review be any more favorable, as he's actually much more of an MGS fan than that guy Ed who is reviewing it.

There won't be much of a backlash if it's negative. Just 1 page of ad hominems. Though seemingly justifiable.

Haven't seen one yet. Kinda surprised about that.

If you aren't seeing one by tonight then there probably be one. Companies usually start advertising their games the Monday of the week its going to be released on. So watch RAW tonight, that's where all the game commercials are.

One thing I don't want to see in the game is that texture pop in crap. It's happened in 2 of the recent games i've played (Killzone and HALO 2) and it's extremely annoying. It seems to mostly happen in cutscenes too and just ruins the look completely.

Did you see much of that in previous MGS games? I don't recall so. But then again, this is something completely different. A massive jungle with no load times. If I don't notice it this will be an insane achievment for a game. Havent noticed any in the videos of it but those were not quite a perfect resolution so. Anyway, I can't wait.. School will be hell tomorrow.

Don't be misled into believeing this. The jungle is chunked into (very detailed) segments, and there's a loading time between each segment. There's no texture popup or any such crap though.

Just so we're absolutely straight on this, was the game actually delayed or was all that fuss for nothing? Is it only delayed in Canada?

Seems like it was an error on GameStops part. A few hours after that post about the week delay they had the release date back to the 17th.

25 hours of gameplay is, perhaps, the biggest piece of news (and maybe even the best) to follow this game.

But I'll believe it when I see it. I'd love to finish MGS3 in MORE than 1 day.

You can get some items that'll give you an idea of where the enemies are. One of which makes a sound so you can't have it on at all times. Another is that APS that'll rumble when anyone is near. But there's nothing like the radar in the previous games. You mainly rely on your camo rating now.

Damn I eagerly anticipate the reviews... Only one place has reviewed it, that's EGM. I WANT TO SEE MORE OPINIONS DAMNIT

MetalGearSolid.org's review seems to be finished, they're just to be waiting to be allowed to post it. They've been teasing it for the past few days on their front page.

My target claims that they have it but cannot sell it until tomorrow. So I guess if you have a lucky target where they can care less about this stuff, go for it.

In related news I called gamestop asking if they would have the new Metroid in today and they said no. I let them know that I had heard other stores would have them in today and he told me that even if they did they were not allowed to sell them until tomorrow.

Since when did ship dates/release dates become enforced street dates?

A little bit OT, but I find that funny:

This appears to be the silhouet of the MGA Metal Gear. Crazy...

man, that would be almost unimaginable. Even the damn Contra:SS, being niche as it is, got the TV commercial of some kind (or so people say, I've never seen it)

On the other hand, Konami didn't have a single TV commercial lately. Not for MGS:TTS, not for SH4, not for NeoContra, not for Rumble Roses...

They give you a quick glimpise of it in the new trailer:
What trailer? What the hell is that? A Metal Gear:Acid's Metal Gear? How do you know that's it?

I can't wait for this game. Unfortunately, it takes a few days to get to where I live and by then, School will start on saturday (my school had a two week holiday due to some incidents that happened and eid, the muslim celebration) and I probably won't get as much playtime as I hoped. I might be able to get 1 hour a day or 2 if I'm lucky but I'm going to have to wait for the weekend to come to get a good length of playtime with it (which is about 5 - 6 hours for this game)

Anyway, i would like to argue a point with one of the comments made in the EGM review

"Plot twists actually make sense."

Someone please tell me a plot twist that didn't make sense.

One of the editors from MGS.org is posting his short impressions of the game on IGN board (I don't think he's the guy who's reviewing the game for them, though)

this game is AMAZING...

But one thing though. How many people here played MGS2 demo before MGS2 came out?
we played hours and hours of that demo trying out so many diffrent things and so many diffrent moves. But when it came time to play the actual game we never really used quite a few of them very well in the game.

MGS3 is kind of like that...i don't really uses CQC unless i have to/feel like it. hanging from the tree. etc somthings in the game are kind of just "there" but we don't get too many good chances to use them.
i can't explain where i am without spoiling the game for you. But lets just say i am at a part in the game where chunk of story just happened and now it's basically uninturupped gameplay for a while inside a huge, HUGE, HUGE base
Hmmm, CQC, I thought was more efficient than weapons in the demo, when you get in a firefight and some of the enemies are nearby. Just slamming them to the ground is sometimes quicker and easier than shooting them, not to mention being able to use one as a shield.

They've done one for the previous 3 games (MGS, MGS2 and Substance). Sony even did one for MGS (uggh). As you said, they haven't been doing TV ads for any games lately so they've got everything saved up for this. :)

then why did the Gamespot guy say that there are frame rate problems (in his latest preview)

He did? I can't remember seeing that, although I haven't read it in ages.

Beats me, I was told by a couple of people that the frame-rate is a solid 30FPS and the PSM guy said it was hiccup free

Is it sure that it will come out in March, my friend needed to knwo.

Also, why don't you get an NTSC PS2
It's coming this February according to Konami Europe. I sent them an email a couple of weeks ago... told them how I felt about the delay.

I want to mod my PS2, but damn.. $$ :|

Knowing MGS' PAL tradition the date will be in March >:(. I hope they use the f***ing time to make freaking great translations and give us damn good extras along with a great Shinkawa cover.

"The game's visuals are quite impressive (especially those cutscenes), but they're also not quite as impressive as MGS2's visuals were for their time. That's partly because MGS2 was the first installment in the series on the PlayStation 2, but also partly because that game maintained a silky-smooth frame rate throughout, whereas this one does not. Granted, MGS3's environments are much more complex, filled with dense foliage, rustling leaves, little scurrying animals, and so on, but all this comes at the expense of a little graphical polish."

Well, 30FPS (even if rock solid) is not silky smooth, no matter how you look at it. MGS2 was 60FPS, this one is 30. Maybe that's what he meant. I have very little doubts the game will have some slowdowns though. MGS2 had them, MGS3 demo has them.

Does HDloader work?

Noone knows for sure. It works with the demo, but that means absolutely nothing. Almost all Konami's game made thus far work perfectly with HDL, though (and that included all the games made by Kojima's team, such as MGS2/Substance/ZoE/ZoE2) Even the latest Konami's game like Rumble Roses reportedly works perfectly with HDL.
