I don't know which difficulty to play on my first time through, Hard!?!?!?!?

According to the guide the difficulty settings are:

Liquid Easy: For first time players or people who don't play action games (and Klone.K).

Naked Normal: Middle ground that's not too hard or too easy for people new to MGS games.

Solid Normal: default difficulty that's perfect for your first playthrough if you've played all previous MGS games, and want a "stern test of your gaming prowess"

Big Boss Hard: Makes everything MUCH harder. to complete the game on this level you basically need to have played the game before, know what to expect and have a deep knowledge and understanding of enemy behavior. You also are pretty much forced to always choose stealth over action. Perfect choice for a second playthrough in order to unlock special items.

I'm playing through on Solid first fo sho. :D

Thanks for all the work on the wallpapers, Bruce; it's appreciated.

Edit: Will the New Game+ (I'm assuming there is one, given the weapon stuff) allow you to change difficulty on each new playthrough?

Oh, Big Boss Hard, I like the sound of that.

I'm pretty sure it's locked at the beginning.

According to the guide, they suggest after a first playthrough where you just have fun and experience the story using whatever tactics you like, you go for a "perfect" playthrough, which means:

No alert phases
No continues
No kills
No health items
No "special items"
Play time of less than 5 hours

all of this needs to be done on a difficulty that "cannot be accessed" before your first playthrough. Not sure if they mean Big Boss Hard, or another, even harder difficulty. I'm sure they explain in detail at the end of the guide, but I'm not looking there right now for obvious reasons.

Either way I'll be playing on the hardest level available in the beginning.

Nice, nice. But those hold up maneuvers you were mentioning...

From what I can tell it's just an improved version of the MGS2/3 hold up, with the body search and attack replacing the item-dropping shimmy being the major difference. Also you can hold them up and disarm them as I mentioned before, for, like, extra humiliation.

No alerts, kills, health items AND less than 5 hours? That's going to be tough, I can't wait! :D

I did that in MGS3. But I basically was playing along with someone else's video to get it done fast and easy. It was still tough as hell.

Fuck...

If you recieve an email from gamefaq or gametrailer members DO NOT read the title!

Some fuck has somehow gotten their hands on massive amounts of email addresses and is chain emailing people, including me with emails containing HUGE spoilers in the titles.

Enough to say I'm now wounded. They spoiled the Patriots for me... Fuck, we aren't safe ANYWHERE.

Hmm. Not sure what you mean by "secret" CQC moves. Do you mean moves that weren't in MGS3? From what I can tell, the disarm/knockback move (depending on what weapon you have equipped) and the silent ground choke are the only entirely new moves, but all of the others have been refined and improved in terms of the button inputs required.

I'm pre-gaming at a bar with some other people close to Virgin, probably starting at eight-ish. PM if you want to come hang out.

The best part of the hold up is the fact that you can strafe now instead of unequip weapon, run to the front, equip weapon, continue hold up.

I think there was a review that mentioned there are secret, unlisted CQC moves. Perhaps we have to aquire this knowledge through secret codecs or items throughout the game. If there's a "secret's" section in the guide they'd probably be there, but of course I'll understand if you don't want to touch that section of the guide.

I have to say, some people are just cunts. Going out of their way to spoil as many people as possible, what sad lonely people.

I managed to avoid Harry Potter spoilers, I avoided Halo 3 spoilers. God I hope I can avoid MGS4 spoilers :(

This might be old, but I've not read through the thread in fear of spoiler-ish things.

In IGN's Podcast Beyond they explain the lowdown with the IGN US review. They aren't going to have the review up until after the game's release, because they want to make sure MGO is factored into their review.

ahh thank you. Been waiting for news on this. It's Jeff Haynes too. Good to see IGN are reviewing it properly, a game this big deserves it.

By that time tho I'll have the game and no longer care about reviews but at least they're doing the right thing :p

So where can I (without camping) get a MGS4 bundle at retail (USA) on June 12? With gamestop only getting a few per store, that looks like it's out; Walmart has that nice $100 giftcard deal, I just don't know if they'll have them out at midnight. Anyone know?
I've been wondering the same. Maybe Best Buy or Circuit City?

Man, is that even possible? Sounds deadly tough.

First off a sincere thanks to Dabookerman for not posting any spoilers it's very much appreciated :) Just by those impressions though this is going to be incredible. I love a great amount of cutscenes and long ones too, it just sounds too incredible for words. I'm having a hard time even imagining how incredible this one game will be. One last week to wait!

Secondly, luckily for my butt's sake I've only been checking the thread every few days on my PSP and to my knowledge ya can't highlight spoilers if you view the thread on a PSP so I didn't see that mega huge spoiler or the gif cause it can't load huge pictures. I'm still safe, but kind of inclined to avoid gaming sites until I've played through and finished the game.

Bruce amazing op, wow..just incredible. Everything you could want to know about this series is all there. A GREAT primer and way to catch up for those who haven't played the series :)

Couldn't you speedrun the previous ones in less than 2-3 hours. 5 hours seems like a good sign to me.

The Patriots have taken over the internet for hating on MGS2 and Raiden.

Durr, you can sprint through nearly any linear type of game in under 5 hours, that's done by pretty much avoiding everything, ignoring everything you can and killing bosses in the quickest way possible. That's the "perfect speedrun" though

BTW the average playtime according to a few on gamefaq who have finished it is 14-19 hours with about 7 (estimation) being cutscenes.

You are a brave man for venturing onto Gamefaqs at times like these. That place must be a filthy, spoiler infected site by now! Nowhere is safe!

Why are you still going there?

And these are people rushing through the game so they can spoil us ASAP, stop posting what they have to say

Gamefaq is very infected.
I read through the titles letter by letter so if I see any "dangerous" words I quickly move onto the next. But mods are doing a good job now, theyre getting rid of threads with title spoilers in a matter of seconds.

I'm still checking them out to see the gameplay "spoilers" if you can call them that. Since I don't care about the gameplay I want to know what I should expect and what options, surprises etc will there be to make that part of the game more bearable for me. Things like the list of unlockables etc that make it more interesting.
