Dunno if someone's interested but...

Gameplay: 4, 3, 2, 1

Story: 3, 4, 2, 1

Characters: 4, 1, 3, 2

Boss units: Fox Hound > Beauty and the Beast > Dead Cell > Cobra (yes, I liked the actual battles with Cobra Unit, but their story sucked ass).

Overall, this is the best Metal Gear Solid game and definitely one of the best games ever created.

Thus far its looking like the following for me.

Gameplay: 4, 3, 1, 2

Story: 3, 4, 1, 2

Characters: 3, 4, 1, 2

Boss units: Fox Hound > Cobra > Dead Cell > B&B Corps

Ok guys I need a few tips on how to take out
crying wolf....is it like the cat and mouse game that you had to play with The End in MGS3?

gosh i love this game:D

I'm halfway through Act 3 and I really don't get some of those reviews. Maybe it's just my eternal love for anything MGS related coloring my perception, but judging from this thread and in accordance with everyone else, I don't think it is.

The combat is so deep and fulfilling and everything else just screams quality.

In previous MGS games, you could gripe about bad controls or some other archaic gameplay designs that could frustrate you of no end, but this truly shines above anything.

I remember I hated in the first MGS and to an extend in the others that your boss fights heavily depended upon how much ammo and rations you have and that if you were low on any of that, you had to be so precise in your attacks that otherwise you would fail - Kojima solved this problem effortlessly with Debrin.

Not to mention the shooting aspects of this game are superb now and in stark contrast of the previous titles - and I can still choose to go entirely the stealth route if I so damn well please. The game give you those options and it makes it fun.

Although, one gripe I have is that during some of the more intense "escape" scenes, there would be one too many loading screens popping up - but I'd wager that is more of a technical problem rather than a design one, and I am sure whatever game is going to use an updated version of this engine a year or two from now is going to have these problems fixed.

Dead

well not really...yet
Man, beginning of Act 4 is soooo good

The best there is yet to come playing, the nostalgic feel of the heliport, the short cutscene at the rusted Camera. Hell, I found the good old Socom looking gun under the truck and Snake muttered "just like old time"
So awesome

Also,
The MGS1 Snake face camo is hilarious
:lol

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Spoilers about a rumor:

I thought this game was supposed to have tentacle porn? I swear I got spoiled a couple of weeks ago.

Am I the only one that put on
young Snake OctaFaceCamo
when fighting bosses? So awesome :D

Spoiler about the first BnB boss battle:

Do I have to
tranq Octopus both times to get her facecamo? I don't remember doing it for the asian chick and I got her facecamo. I shot her but tranq'd her when she was in the second phase

That was one thing I noticed too. They didn't go overboard with the swearing but used them very effectively. (Act 2 Spoiler)
I really liked the Laughing Octopus "ISN'T IT FUCKING HILARIOUS!?" For some reason the line seemed much eerier with the use swearing in it.
I could have sworn she said
"It's all so fuckin' hysterical."
, which they said in Road to Perdition (you know, the movie with Tom Hanks and Daniel Craig). Considering how much Kojima likes movies, I think it makes sense.

No, just when the Beauty shows up. You can kill the Beast with anything

Holy shit at Act 3
standoff in the water! My lord, Kojesus, :bow

You'll get it later in the game. When you beat her the camo doesn't fit on Snakes head. Later it does. You'll see

LAME. I forgot about that. I figured since I already had it from the previous run I would get it automatically.

Just Finished fighting Crying Wolf after that I got the Ending theme for MGS1 for the Ipod and I put it on, for some damn reason I started to tear up the whole Crying Wolf back story added to that.

I thought the revelation that Zero/Paramedic/Sigint/et al were the original Patriots was... weird. I didn't see it coming, and in hindsight, I'm not sure it works. Just the way they were portrayed in MGS3... kind of hard for me to swallow that they would eventually become so corrupt. There wasn't much to suggest or foreshadow that.

But I still have to beat the game, maybe it will make more sense later

Act 3:

Same here. I Major Zero/Sigint/Para-medic weren't very interesting characters, so it's hard to take this part of the plot very seriously. But anyways, the sequenses following that revelation were so awesome I almost didn't care

Act 4:

JESUS F'ING CHRIST at Shadow Moses recreated for MGS4! and the music, the flashbacks...wow.

I havent completed MGS3, but I completed past the end, and I actually found the solidus battle in MGS2 more epic than that battle...but visuals play a large part in that

and then there is also MPO that probably hinted at some of it.
I didn't play it enough to know though.

If you use the Mk II during one of the Mission Briefings, there is a remote on the table in front of Otacon's big monitor. If you hit R1 while focused on the remote, it will put on a screensaver with scantily clad asian girls.

Was I the only one who turned on auto-aim during the (Act 3)
chase sequence?
It wasn't that it was hard I just felt it lent itself better to the situation.

can somebody PLEASE EXPLAIN NAOMI??? this bitch is confusing!!!

1.
i just got to where she dies. now, did she have some kind of love history with otacon? the dude is crying like a baby (the crying is the worst voice acting in the game imo)

2. its hard to tell which side she is playing for, why are we to feel sorry for her? it seemed like she was with vamp, very confusing. her story is just kind of thrown in there...

3. is snakes camo getting messed up? theres all these dots on it..dont remember it being there. also, this REX rail gun segment is bleh.

I'm watching the Blu-Ray that came with the limited edition now... It's a really, really cool video. I'm super glad I got the limited edition. They also show the room where all those journalists got to play the game months ago. It's rad. :D

Just finished act 4, its a love letter to MGS fans. It maybe has my favorite gameplay moments of any MGS game, actually any game ever. Words can't do this game justice, its something you have to experience for yourself. So much variety to the gameplay, so much love put into every inch of this game, never have I seen such quality.

The question is no longer is this game the best MGS game, or is this the best game of the generation. The question is now is this the best representation of everything videogames are or want to become. Does this game showcase all aspects of gaming at its highest level, gameplay, story, graphics, sound, value, variety, hell even multiplayer. Basically I am asking, is this the greatest videogame ever made? I am starting to think yes.

i think you should pay more attention to the cutscenes. Her role is explained in the game.

possibly the most useless answer ever.

if ur not going to explain like i asked, y answer? of course i could go through the hours and hours of cutscenes, but that doesnt seem like a plausible solution. also i payed pretty close attention to them in the first place.

1.
nowhere does it explain their past love, or y there is sexual tension, or even why hes crying like a little bitch.

2. she constantly switches sides, and it is never explained exactly whos side she is on. she took snakes blood, only to go to liquid. and then when they see her again, shes all over vamp, and they treat her like nothing happened?

I did this too. Made things a lot easier and more enjoyable, I'm
the whole sequence felt like an action movie you had control of, the camera angles were just wow.

Just beat act3. I thought the game could not get any better after the act3 boss fight. But the final cut scene!!! There are no words....

Even if the first 3 acts were 3 separate games. They would already be the best 3 games I have ever played in my 20 some years of gaming.

I am sorry. I am not trying to be rude or anything but why are you asking about #1?
that happens in a freaking cutscene and it is not short...isn't that there what it is?
if you played MGS1, you can kind of related to why he is crying. He lost someone close that he also loved

about 2...it is kind of complicated. I think someone else can explain this part better than I do. but I think she's
on Snake's side...but I guess she's also following Vamp for more than 1 reasons..one of which is she's responsible for him being a "monster"

I laugh at the people who think MGS3 has a better story or better characters. I'm quite shocked how overrated this game is here. Yes, the Gameplay was great, as was the presentation, but they played it very safe with the actual plot, which, in the end, was pretty cheesy and unnecessary. MGS4 plays in another league.

kay. so...i just beat it.
um...

i think that was the best videogame i've ever played in my life.
holllllllllllllllllllllyyyy fuckkkkk.

but now i am dead tired. i will post my impressions later.

but talk about genius. freakin' kojima.

agreed
the difference in MGS3 and 4 is that you can feel the characters emotions in 4. It is a lot more character driven.

Finished it last night, 20 hrs 12min but i have a question.

Can your awarded items be used on any setting or just the setting you finished the game on?

that's goin a little too far

act 1 was kind of weak, especially in comparison to the two following it

act 2 was more or less escalation, with even that weak chase setting up for a more refined chase segment in act 3. though the act 2 boss fight was better than 3's

act 3 was the cream of the crop, the game has finished setting things up and now will escalate up to the end when the game blows your mind and you want to replay it again. even still, the beginning of act 3 had the weak stalking segment within the city but then made up for it with everything that followed. it was still prettiest from start to finish

Am I right in saying you are awarded with something if you tranq the BB squad in their first form?
Nah shoot first, tranq second. I'm pretty sure the first forms are untranq-able.

EDIT: Apparently false, my apologies.

sorry, i was getting tense because of that stupid
REX rail gun sequence.

anyway, i didnt play 1, but i realize he lost his sister. it just seems very weird. as soon as they saw each other you could tell there was something going on, and it was just out of place. i thought maybe they had some kind of sexual history from MGS1. and then otacon said something like "i could have loved her forever!!!" or something. very very out of place if that was the beginning of their relationship. they spent like, 2-3 nights together.

and yea, it really seemed like she could be on both sides though. it seemed she was on vamps side, but still didnt really want to see snake get hurt. still could have been explained better as well

Everyone Otacon loves ends up dying. In MGS1 Snake kills Sniper Wolf, in MGS2 Vamp kills his sister, and now Naomi is dead. Naomi and him formed a relationship during MGS4. There was like a 30 minute long cutscene developing this. As for which side she is on, there are a lot of hints right now, but all the information hasn't been presented yet.
