Some people are saying the people in the latest podcast were talking about something coming to this game on Friday. Can some people look/ confirm this? If so when does MGO update- Thursday with the store or another day of the week? If it's not MGO, we could be getting trophies this week.

MGO receives maintenance updates on Monday nights, but the reward point shop updates Thursdays. I'm guessing if they announce something for MGO, it will take effect the following Monday. I really hope they announce something good for MGO.

Nooooooo I want trophies. :( And they said something was COMING to this game on Friday, not announced (that's why I asked if MGO updates on Friday). But I may need someone to listen to the latest podcast to confirm.

Exactly.

"Breaking the cycle" was a major point of the entire game, not just the ending. It's not like it came out of nowhere.

Correcting one's past mistakes for a future generation (aka "atoning for your sins") seemed like a larger theme to me.

Otacon is fighting to eradicate the Metal Gears that he brought into the world, Naomi is trying to stop the horrible nanomachines she created, Ocelot, Big Boss, and Eva all attempted to overthrow the Patriots that they helped to create, and Snake had responsibility dumped on him through his whole life. It was never fair for him, that the "sins" he had to atone for weren't exactly his own. FoxDie was forced on him and
he should have had to kill himself to stop it, but out of nowhere he's suddenly gonna be okay.
But still, I hadn't really considered the "breaking the cycle" mindset, and I don't mind the true ending as much anymore. I would still prefer things my way, though. :lol

Downright haunting, really.

That shit would've fucked my brain up so bad, but in a veeerry good way.

i really hope they overhaul the whole thing. it has a ton of potential, but falls short at several nitpicky points which, together, ruin the whole thing for me.

Beginning of Act 5 is such a bitch on Big Boss (no kill run). I can't avoid the fricking Gekkos, and I have a specific pattern for avoiding the frogs, but its very difficult to do it perfectly.

Also *tranquing* fricking Crying Wolf was so annoying, sitting under the truck.

I think I had more fun when I was killing things in some parts, sometimes I feel like the stealth is not as fun as last games. You would think that you couldn't just hide under one car and take down the boss. It feels a bit rushed.

If they overhaul MGO and get rid of the box flipping business, I will 100% get back into it.
I just think it takes out a lot of the strategy if you can flip back and forth between the box to dodge shots.

on the beginning of act 5, you barely have enough time to get the door open to go inside outer haven once the gekko turns his back, but you'll be screwed up by the frog way up high on the tower to the right of the door if she sees you. take her out with a headshot from your tranquilizer and you're golden from there, assuming you did what i did and just hug the left wall the entire way.

i found that it was most fun to play with no kills unless i'm in the alert phase. it lets you take advantage of the fun CQC system that this game has to offer while not hanging you up in any way that's too painful.

Really? Damn. That would have been a crazy ending. In a good way, though.

I'm playing through the game again and listening to the Integral Podcasts as I play. The commentary is better than trophies for me. If any of you decide to go through the game with the commentary, make sure to check where each podcast is used because a few of them are out of order. I'm at the last part of Act 2 and the Confinement Facility portion is the best area in the game, hand down. There are a billion ways to approach it and it has two entrances and several mini objectives (leading the guerrillas, rescuing the P.O.W's, taking on the helicopter, etc.) It's like they took the best parts of MGS3 and distilled them into 45 minutes of awesome. Can't wait to tackle Acts 3 and 4 with the commentary as well.

Yeah. We should get an announcement on the PS Blog tomorrow. It may just be MGO updates, though.

Then don't hide under the car?

It was a bit retarded IMO,
you're on a really narrow hyper-hightech warship full of hightech soldier-ninjas and bio-walking-tanks and they still can't prevent a guy from crawling all the way to the front door.

Eh? You could have be an amorphous blob trying to sneak into the fudge factories of the Goblin King for all I care. From a gameplay perspective it was the best part of the whole goddamn series, at least in my opinion. I must have poured about ten to fifteen hours into that one section overall. I fucking love it.

Act 2 is also very good though. I didn't find the small prison camp until my third, or maybe even fourth playthrough. Then on my last go round (listening to the integral podcast) I decided to go back the other way and it was like I was playing through the larger prison camp for the first time.

To me the opening section of act 5 is the ultimate expression of what's always made MGS fun, but act 2 is the best showcase of MGS4's unique charms. My only complaint about that section is no matter how you do it, by the time you get to the mansion the rebels always seem to be there. Is it even possible for that to play out differently? I never managed it, even when I started shooting rebels myself and leaving the PMC troops alone. But it's a small nuisance, everything before it is pure gold. The village (really it's more of a hamlet) in particular is superb and let's not discount the fact that on subsequent playthroughs you essentially get to play as Naked Snake.

Newer owner of a PS3, huge MGS fan since the first one I made sure this was the first game I got. I just finished act 2 and holy freaking crap the last bit of act 2 was AMAZING. Can't wait to see what happens next.

A whole lot of nothing. Act 3 sucks.

A year on from MGS4. Wow. How do I feel about it now?

It is amazing and I have never experienced anything like it in my gaming life. It is so idiosyncratic, strange and distinctly Kojima. It's the ultimate expression of one of gaming's few true auteurs. It plays by its own rules and defies conventions but at the same time it embraces videogame cliches lovingly. It's daft, melancholy, exhilarating, convoluted, melodramatic and involving.

Bravo, Kojima Productions.

That said, there are faults with the title. I think that Acts 3 and 5 are weaker in quality than 1, 2 and 4. I find 5 especially disappointing due to the lack of gameplay, and I think it is extremely sad that the final moment of Solid Snake 'gameplay' we will perhaps ever have is a weak version of Punch Out. Whereas MGS3's final boss was a summation of the gameplay mechanics (stealth, combat, camouflage, healing), MGS4's climax goes for tired nostalgia instead, which is a bit of a shame.

I don't want to end these recollections on a sour note, though, so let me reiterate that this is one of my favourite games of all time and I love it very much.

You stalk a guy. Super duper fun.

And, or course, the best part...

the motorcycle chase. Yeah, I've grown to hate it ever since my FOXHOUND emblem run.

Yes, fun. I liked it a lot, but then I only had to do it once.

This bit was fantastic, and the boss was great.

Fact: There was supposed to be a segment where you sneaked/escorted
Big Mama
after the
Raven fight
, but they couldn't fit it in due to some technical reasons, so theoretically speaking, Act 3 could have had more variety than it did :S

Why would you only do a Foxhound run when you could get most of those high-end emblems w/ a Big Boss run?

Because I suck at The Boss Expert. :(

I almost wanted to do a Big Boss Emblem run, but then I found out you have to skip the cutscenes, and that's just bullshit. If i'm gonna take the time to play metal gear, i'm not gonna strip away the story.

big boss wouldn't skip the cutscenes.

I still think this was cut because it wasn't fun. Of course, by that logic we wouldn't have had that awful EVA escort mission at the end of MGS3. But I think if Kojima could have made it fun, it would have been in there. Judging by the way those cutscenes play out, it was likely cut very late in development.

You seriously watch the cutscenes every time you play through Metal Gear? I couldn't stand that. I think I've watched the story twice, although I've never listened to Drebin's B&B eulogies again, they were terrible. I was so glad they cut down the codec stuff this time around, although I wouldn't have minded more of the realtime stuff. You should have had the option to listen to all of the codec like that. Raiden's tracking tips were really fucking annoying too. Both felt like last minute additions and something tells me focus testing prompted their inclusion, or at least pressure from outside the development team.

I am going to try to get the Assassin Emblem and unlock Altair's costume, I never got around to that. I already did the Big Boss run, so much fun, hard, but very rewarding.

As for cutscenes, I never watch them after the first maybe second time. Unless its been years, I will just skip them.

Speaking of assassin's emblem, in the guide it states I need to knife kill 50 enemies and choke 50 enemies. So my question is can I do both on one guy, like choke them to death and then slit their throat?

I'm sure the choke quota is actually CQC hold, and knife kills are actually knife attacks that result in kills or stuns.

Ok cool, easy to do then.
I know it works because that's the only way I could have done it. I don't kill dudes in MGS games, it's a weird thing for me like when I play Jumping Flash or Mirror's Edge and my insides tense up when I'm falling from high altitude. Of course for certain medals I do have to kill soldiers and it makes me gag a bit.

I'm the opposite, even in my stealth runs I like to kill everyone. :D

I don't tend to kill much either. But I used to love torturing the fuck out of those guys. A bullet in the radio, one in the right arm and one in the leg. Then just follow them around as they desperately try to hobble away, occasionally punching them in the face or choking them for a bit. Aaaaaaah, good times.

Am I just crazy or did I actually read somewhere that this had become a greatest hits game? Thereby making it $30.

But everywhere I look has it for 50ish still. What's the deal? I want to have this for when my new PS3 arrives next week.
