Metal Gear Solid HD Collection |OT| The Naked, the Solid and the Lightning

The type of polish that isn't clouded by revisionist history; Snake Eater could barely hold its framerate and would come to a crawl whenever a grenade blew up or 4 guards were on your tail. Also there was the insufferable radio glitch where there was a delay whenever you hit the call button.

Right.

If those are your only complaints, then yeah, the game was pretty polished. The framerate was shit if you played like Rambo.
It's almost 10 years later and the HD collection version of 3 (and 2, whenever you see the more than 10 marines on-screen) manages to have framerate drops on much superior hardware.

So if I just choose to cognitive dissonance the things that make it an unpolished experience then the game is pretty polished. Gee, why didn't I think of that.

MGS3 on the PS2 is unplayable compared to how it is in the HD collection, it's flat out disingenuous to argue otherwise.

Too bad I never argued otherwise and was simply put off by the mechanics of the game itself, that didn't age well.

Enemies hear everything except stalking and slow crawling. I wish you could crouch walk like in 4.

I also really miss the crouch walk, but stalking up behind every enemy isn't totally necessary. If you run up behind them and immediately CQC hold or slam them they don't have time to start an alert. They'll turn around as you reach them and sprout a green exclamation mark, but it doesn't count as a proper alert. From there you can let them go and transition to a regular holdup, or just do all the CQC things you'd usually do. If you grab them, throw them forwards (onto their faces), and then hold them up they'll be completely incapacitated; they won't get up unless you trigger an alert or one of their fellow guards spots them and comes over to see what's going on.

How do I get the head part for Metal Gear Zeke?
I got one by replaying the Pupa battle main op and shooting everything but the AI core to defeat it. Only takes a few minutes.

Ok I'll try that. Thank you.

I've tried to jump back into Peace Walker, but I'm at the first helicopter fight and it's seemingly impossible to complete it stealthily at this point. I've done just about every other main ops mission stealthily, but I can't seem to do it this time. It's absolutely frustrating and I'm finding it difficult to want to continue.

It's pretty difficult to beat helicopters with stealth even if you have a crap load of gear. The key is usually to have smoke grenades and to make sure you attack when the helicopter is far enough or looking away. On that main ops stage you can't really see it most of the time but I think all of those trees should provide coverage for you too.

Another way to S Rank the choppers is to first hold-up the soldiers and just leave them there. Then, get out a sniper rifle of some sort and start shooting the windshield on the chopper. You can try to be stealthy or you can be spotted, it doesn't matter. Once you damage the windshield enough the leader will pop out and you can tranq him.

This is related to a general way of S Ranking the vehicle missions, even if you are spotted. First, Fulton everybody out. Once they're all gone, and you have been spotted, you can force the leader out of the vehicle if you damage it enough. To do it you'll need the Carl Gustav if you have it or your best missile launcher. Once your gear is good enough (with Bandana + Fulton Launcher) this is a really easy and much less stressful way of trying to get S Rank then stealthing your way through it.

Taking out vechiles gets much easier once you get the stealth suit. It's a pain when you don't have much fulton gear in the beginning though.

You can just throw smokes where the soldiers land, run up to them and CQC. The chopper can't see you when it's unloading them. One time I just stayed in the same place, lying on the ground and it still couldn't see me, even with soldiers dropping right on top of me.

On the ps3 version of peacewalker, are the bosses still insanely broken?
Broken?

I'm playing Snake Eater. I've never played any MGS games. I am awful at it. It took me an hour and a half to do the pre-credits mission. Also, why didn't Kojima just make movies instead?

EDIT: I don't like this at all. I don't think I'm going to finish this or even put in disc two. I don't enjoy the game play (and I really dislike the giant fucking snakes everywhere. Even video game snakes bother me greatly), I don't enjoy the agonizingly long cut scenes, and I'm pretty sure this has to be a parody or satire. Ocelot spinning his guns for 3 full minutes? Bee dude dancing constantly during the fight? Ocelot's meow thing? I think this is supposed to be so bad it's good, but it just isn't enjoyable at all for me. I think I'm sending it back tomorrow. These are just not my kind of games.

Was fun! Felt like it had its challenges but nothing too crazy (looking at you MGS4 Chicken Emblem).

This is my 2nd time through Peace Walker where I did just about everything. Overall I think it's fair to say that while some of the core MGS gameplay elements weren't that strong (stealth, boss battles) a lot of the stuff they introduced like recruiting, development and expanding mother base were pretty fun. It's also pretty satisfying when you are powerful enough to walk through those mech battles like nothing (though there were still too many I think >_>).

Ok, so I kept up with Snake Eater and learned to love it and hate it at the same time. I'm completely unsure of what to think of it. I love the ridiculous attention to detail of creating the universe. I was often annoyed with various sections of the game. I also didn't figure out until right before the Shagohod battle that there was a map I could use (somehow, I'm an idiot apparently) or that you could drag bodies. It also took me a number of tries on The Boss battle before I realized that using CQC and then shooting her was a good idea. It literally took me 8 hours of sticking with it before I started to like it.

There were so many times where I thought "what the fuck is this shit?" or "what the fuck does this have to do with the story at all?" and those ended up usually being what I liked the most. Such a wacky game, but something of a masterpiece I'd say. It's certainly unique.

I tried playing 2, but the camera is a deal breaker. It's awful. The gameplay is fine, but that camera is making me not even want to try to get past the opening stage. Does it get better, or is it that style the whole game? Maybe the camera of Snake Eater spoiled me, but holy fuck, I can't stand it.

PW is pretty much a no go, I tried it with friend for the past two days. Why KP thought that porting a PSP game to a home console was a good idea is beyond me.

Just tried MGS2 and MGS3 on the Sony HMZ-T1... god damn they look good! Especially MGS3, looks so clean, smooth, and "full" (for lack of a better word). I thought I preferred MGS3 on 3DS for the stereo 3D and other visual tweaks, but after seeing it on the OLED in 1:1 with no upscaling, it's a tough choice picking which I like better.

For kicks, I checked the PS2 version of MGS2 on the HMZ afterwards to see if there's a big visual difference; besides the lack of widescreen which is a big deal and immediately missed, initially I thought the loss of resolution wasn't that big of a deal (remember it's upscaling 480p to 720p, so looks better than on a typical HDTV), but after spending more time with it I started noticing visual artifacts (especially on fog effects) and jaggies. So I came to the conclusion that the HD Collection is indeed a major upgrade (yep, I'm late to the party).

Off Topic: Anyone know what does the PS2 Smoothing filter on backwards compatible PS3s do? I switched it On and Off repeatedly in-game trying to figure out what it's doing. It seemed to reduce aliasing slightly and somehow makes the game look less blurry, but not sure how the latter result is achieved.

What's the best way to get dog tags from those bastard tough guys? I can't always have a unsurpressed SOCOM bullet firing off to scare them because it'll set the alarm off, and if they are all asleep except for one the goddamn cavalry comes to investigate. Is there a different way?

PS2 smoothing is like AA I believe, although I forgot if it does it with the whole image or not

MGS2 has the fixed camera position - it stays that way the entire game. It originally was featured in MGS3 too.

Rotating free-look was first introduced in MGS3 Subsistence.

Yuck. I wish they could added that to MGS2. I'm sticking with it because I'm intrigued with Kojima and his weirdness now. But the camera is quite unpleasant to me.

Right, finished off MGS 2 and started MGS3. Forgot that you used the dpad to move silently up behind an enemy. Was getting frustrated that they always heard me lol.

So it's some doctor in love with The Boss, who gained access to CIA's documents regarding her and builds a robot with her personality... who cries.

I... I don't even know where to start.

Finished MGS2. Wat. I have no idea what the hell I watched or what I was supposed to get out of that other than the symbolic nature of the character throwing away the dog tags of the player if you put your info down for that (or the creator, if you put Kojima's info in). Other than that, I felt like I was being punished the whole time for playing the game. Especially after that terrible and long escort mission with Emma. That had to be intentional just to piss the player off. Or the part where you get pissed on. And mistaken for a woman. And stripped naked and punched in the dick. And have a nagging girlfriend the whole game. And the ridiculous amount of backtracking. And finding out that most of the game didn't matter anyway (or did it?).

I THINK the over all theme was not questioning and doing whatever you're told is bad, even when that means playing a video game where you have to do whatever you're told, while you're playing said video game. And you should turn that shit off and stop playing and if you don't, Kojima will make you suffer. I also feel like a moron that I went through the entirety of MGS 2 and 3 without realizing how to throw or choke people out.

All I know is that I have no idea what the story is and I don't enjoy playing the games much at all, but I still really want to play MGS4.

I've been playing the HD versions of MGS2 and 3 all month long lately in a marathon to finally play all the MGS games for the first time, it's been a blast.

Metal Gear Solid 2 I have played initially up to the bomb disposal part a few years back, but never did finish it. Probably because of Raiden.

That probably brings me up to the one point in the game I didn't like, Raidens pussy personality "WE DIDNT DO THIS IN AR TRAINING, DOES THE MISSION STILL STAND? I'M NO BOMB EXPERT" etc.. god help me if I had a codec conversation with Rose "RAIDEN REMEMBER THIS DATE ITS IMPORTANT" Also despite the great gameplay I don't think I ever played more than 5 minutes of game before I had to watch another cutscene or codec convo.

Also Vamp's ballerina dancing is really stupid.

Other than that the game is great, loved the twists and the fact the game was some sort of bizzaro MGS.

MGS3 on the other hand was much better in terms of cutscenes in that regard, There were lots of fun moments in the game, through some awkward, the bosses were great barring The End who I cheated on. Also the time paradox part left me in stitches.
The ending was also great and very memorable.

I'm onto MGS4 right now and everything is fantastic, The Gekkos really remind me of those damn walkers in Half life 2 episode 2, and Raiden is now a badass Ninja and not a pussy.

My copy of MGS HD finally arrived. Not gonna start with any game soon though, bought it because it was really cheap. I had a look at MGS3, my god it looks gorgeous!

But... I couldn't find the Snake Eater theme, isn't it in the collection? I thought it plays when you start the game.

so you didnt enjoy 3 enough to finish and you didnt enjoy 2, but you want to play 4? (edit, i see you finished 3).

sounds like fun. why not just watch the story on youtube or something?

It plays once you complete Virtuous Mission. I didn't know about it since it was my first time playing MGS3, and holy crap, I was amazed when it started playing.

PW is a gigantic POS on consoles. It's probably a less gigantic POS on PSP, but still a pretty big POS. Dat lolworthy storyline. That is all.

The only redeeming quality in this game is the mother base. Hope they bring it back for GZ.

You think MGS 4 hit rock-bottom in terms of storyline and silliness?

So I popped The End's melon early and ended up fighting the Ocelot Unit instead. Was a lot more fun sneaking about and taking them all down silently.

Just got past THE LADDER.

So I've been working on a Foxhound run on MGS3 the last few days and it's been a pretty grueling experience so far. The restricted number of saves is pretty annoying I keep trying to save as less as possible and it just ends up me having to re-do areas again and again. Just yesterday I was trying to get through from the river with the hovercrafts to the end of the warehouse (including going to pick up the Mk 22 SP) without saving and finally I gave up and just saved in the warehouse after a few hours.

The aiming has also been a pretty big obstacle. It's so different than MGS4 and PW which I had been playing back-to-back. A lot of the times I feel like I have a perfect head-shot lined up and I end up missing.

It's probably going to be a lot easier the 2nd time around because right now I'm not as comfortable with each area in terms of predicting the guard's movements and what not.

Oh yeah The Pain kicked my ass pretty bad. I'm not looking forward to The End at all, I remember it being killer on Hard already.

What do you mean? That was one of the easiest boss battles in any game I've ever played. Unless you meant the cut scenes and codec leading to it. There were at least 2 occasions where my controller turned off due to inactivity during cut scenes.

When I started playing MGS2 (I'm going 2->3->4->PW) I felt like Old Snake. So rusty.

About to return 1 eye less to Grozny and I'm going to earn the title of Big Boss by the time I'm done.

Believe.
