Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain |OT| The Man Who Sold The World

Just thought I would throw my brief impressions on this whole cutscenes/gameplay thing with the experience that I have playing the game so far (approximately twenty hours).

The series as a whole is in my top three, and out of every game in the franchise, I would definitely say that Snake Eater is my favourite. I have played through all of them multiple times, and on top of that, am a huge fan of many other stealth games. However, aside from the gameplay, I am also a huge fan of the amount and quality of the cutscenes from the previous games (especially Guns of the Patriots, which actually is very close to my personal favourite because of the cutscenes themselves.)

The Phantom Pain is a fantastic game so far. I absolutely love almost every aspect of it, and have been completely addicted to it since I got it Thursday afternoon. HOWEVER, the lack of a narrative developed through lengthy cutscenes (which I actually LIKE) is definitely missing from this game. Don`t get me wrong...the first three hours of the game are jam packed with story, however, after that point the missions begin to deviate from a stronger, overarching narrative, to something a little different than the other mainline games. Did I find this jarring? Yes, very much so. Am I going to sit here and complain about the game the whole time? Absolutely not. The game is still absolutely amazing, and if you EVER had any interest in or love for the series, then this game will not disappoint you.

In terms of what I value most in games, I will almost always say story first. Some people may see this as backwards, or cite the general lack of good stories in videogames as evidence as to why I'm wrong, but that's just what I choose to look for first. For all I know, The Phantom Pain could totally change this from the middle of the game on, but from what I have seen of the game so far, I would personally say that there is a huge reduction in important cutscenes presented during missions.

Hopefully I have positively contributed to this debate. This game is still one hundred percent worth picking up no matter what you are looking for, and definitely one of the best games I have played in recent memory. If anybody has any questions, feel free to message me. I wanted to avoid spoilers with this post, but if you want details on the types of missions I am talking about that I have experienced so far, I am more than willing to respond!

I'm out of the loop, having only played MGS 1, 2 and Ground Zeroes but I thought people, besides MGS story fanatics, hated the long drawn out cutscenes. Or is the issue that they could've struck a middle ground between very few and too many?
MGS4 was literally 8 hours of cutscenes and 2 hours of gameplay.
MGS3 was literally 4 hours of cutscenes and 2 hours of gameplay.

Guess some people wanted more of that. I'm not one of them. Though I think your ending question is probably close to the mark: a better balance could've been reached, and "mostly tapes" does seem kinda shady and cheap given the series' history.

Why are you listening to them while fighting and doing stuff? You'd just be sat watching heads talk to each other anyway with a codec call, find a nice vista, shoot some sheep or something.

you can't even shoot sheep

miller's gonna chime in with "boss, with those sheep we can create pillows for mother base" or some shit

you literally have to do nothing. and if I'm going to do nothing, then yes, I'd prefer watching heads talk. I've been happily doing it since 1998, and for the final metal gear solid, I'd do it again ; _ ;

I know it doesn't really make sense on paper, but seriously, the codec conversations were always engaging in all of the other metal gear games. for some fucking reason, the same can't be said about tapes for me. that's just the way it is.

These past few days playing MGS5 was boring and hell in my opinion. I was really hyped when they revealed it in 2012 and followed the game to this day. But the first day I got the game I thought this would be best mgs story. But I was wrong :(. I don't trust kojima with MGS anymore this might sound a bit evil but I'm glade that konami let go of Kojima.

FOB set, i can dispatch 2 more teams on missions now, 5 in total.

I'm yet to find an issue with the microtransactions, they did'nt hurt my gameplay so far.

I love the release cycle. Some people get so hyped up and then read one other person's opinion and just want to throw in the towel. Happens with all large releases.

For those who finished the game or are at least far enough. Can you confirm or deny that the amount and/or length of cut scenes increases the closer you get to the end of the game?

So I redeemed my code via redeem.geforce.com

At one point it had me log into Steam, then I sort of went quickly through the screens so I think it said it was going to send me some other code via email but that was 20 mins ago? Do I have to wait until midnight?

Wait... They chastise you for shooting sheep? They are not going to be happy with me, that's what I was planning to do to try my weapons out. I guess we just wont have pillows.

I know this probably been asked to death but, are there cassette tapes you can miss? Or are they unlocked automatically? I just don't want to miss anything story wise.

It should just be in your library.

Check your library on steam, should be there.

The Side-Ops are totally unranked, so it really doesn't matter how you handle 'em. You can call it air support and mow everybody down if you like.

Haha yeah I know they're unranked and am just so used to non-lethal tranq gun all day every day approach in previous games that doing the complete opposite is just foreign to me in MGS games. I still do Main Missions all stealthy non-lethal (old habit I guess), but Side-Ops is just time for me to test out all the weapons. So much fun too.

So anyone else experience side op 12 having a check mark by it after completing it, yet it remains playable as if you didn't finish it? All my other side ops say they can't be replayed but this one let's me over and over and worried my game is glitched.

The online manual mentions something about being able to partner up with other people's FOB's to attack/defend with them... is there going to be a GAF group once someone figures out how all that works?

Some can be replayed.

Subjective opinion I guess. Codecs bored the crap out of me when they went on for so long. Tapes work much better for me. To each his own.

It would be so nice to have a 5 - 10 minutes of cut scenes every hour and then.. the game was advertised as the story of Big Boss and his revenge yet there's almost no story here!

Also... is it necessary to take almost
3 hours
of time to build a base?
Or for the supply drops to takes forever to get to you?

The game takes unnecessary a lot amount of time from you :\

I'll just say that the more you progress and level up. The more things will get faster and easier for you, from the supply drops to the chopper coming to pick you up. It takes time but it feels like you're seeing BB and Kaz rise to glory infront of your eyes because afterall you're making all the necessary decisions. I don't know to me, it's just so damn fun to play. Controls and the feeling of everything you're doing as well as the presentation are on point.

EDIT: The only things that won't take faster is when you want to build another structure. The timings of these will increase when you build another structure lets say for R&D.

Anything that has to do with the story or background information is automatically updated for you. When you begin a new mission or return to mother base your cassette menu will often be updated with the story tapes relevant to what has just occurred.

Everything that I have found throughout missions so far has been extra stuff like songs. Not sure if there is anything else you can find out there though!

That's a bit unfair. Those gameplay videos are speedruns and people who know the game well enough to rush through it. I certainly had much more gameplay than that with both of those games.

Oh man, I completely forgot you don't have to play as Snake during side ops and there are even female soldiers (who aren't over sexualised, even when in the skin-tight sneaking suit)

Loving this :D

lol First thing I thought of when looking at her was budget Quiet.

Awesome. Thank you!

Some of them are open for the player to replay them and my guess is that to make it easier for people to extract high skilled soldiers everytime as well as gain more currency. Easy grinding but honestly if you do the side op as well as main missions, you'll have more than you'd ever want.

Ugh. This is very alarming and worrying.
Dude, don't be "that" guy, everything has been worrying thus far to you, it sounds like this is a skipper in your case, request it as a gift or wait until the drop in price, don't fill this thread with you worrying 2 or 3 times a page.
