Just thought I would throw my brief impressions on this whole cutscenes/gameplay thing with the experience that I have playing the game so far (approximately twenty hours).
The series as a whole is in my top three, and out of every game in the franchise, I would definitely say that Snake Eater is my favourite. I have played through all of them multiple times, and on top of that, am a huge fan of many other stealth games. However, aside from the gameplay, I am also a huge fan of the amount and quality of the cutscenes from the previous games (especially Guns of the Patriots, which actually is very close to my personal favourite because of the cutscenes themselves.)
The Phantom Pain is a fantastic game so far. I absolutely love almost every aspect of it, and have been completely addicted to it since I got it Thursday afternoon. HOWEVER, the lack of a narrative developed through lengthy cutscenes (which I actually LIKE) is definitely missing from this game. Don`t get me wrong...the first three hours of the game are jam packed with story, however, after that point the missions begin to deviate from a stronger, overarching narrative, to something a little different than the other mainline games. Did I find this jarring? Yes, very much so. Am I going to sit here and complain about the game the whole time? Absolutely not. The game is still absolutely amazing, and if you EVER had any interest in or love for the series, then this game will not disappoint you.
In terms of what I value most in games, I will almost always say story first. Some people may see this as backwards, or cite the general lack of good stories in videogames as evidence as to why I'm wrong, but that's just what I choose to look for first. For all I know, The Phantom Pain could totally change this from the middle of the game on, but from what I have seen of the game so far, I would personally say that there is a huge reduction in important cutscenes presented during missions.
Hopefully I have positively contributed to this debate. This game is still one hundred percent worth picking up no matter what you are looking for, and definitely one of the best games I have played in recent memory. If anybody has any questions, feel free to message me. I wanted to avoid spoilers with this post, but if you want details on the types of missions I am talking about that I have experienced so far, I am more than willing to respond!
