MGS4 was literally 8 hours of cutscenes and 2 hours of gameplay.
MGS3 was literally 4 hours of cutscenes and 2 hours of gameplay.

Guess some people wanted more of that. I'm not one of them. Though I think your ending question is probably close to the mark: a better balance could've been reached, and "mostly tapes" does seem kinda shady and cheap given the series' history.

If only we could get that same proportional cutscene/gameplay time in MGSV, it would be like 40 hours of gameplay and 100+ hours of cutscenes.
But seriously, really I was hoping for somewhere around the area of 5-9 hours, theres so much gameplay that it would balance out.

Well I dunno that we should take speed runs as an indication of the amount of gameplay.

I can't tell you the amount of gameplay hours I got out of the MGS2 demo. Probably more than ZOE itself.

That is however my biggest problem with MGS4. The game had such amazing gameplay, so many weapons and tools, and ways to approach situations. And yet, there was only a small taste of that gameplay in the first part of the game. The rest was amazing in it's own right, but was not the same type of gameplay.

MGSV looks to correct this in a big way. I just hope AI, and combat in MGSV is as great as it was in MGS4.

I don't see the problem with tapes. I usually leave them on before going on missions, while reading whatsapp on my phone or neogaf. I use it to relax after a looooooooooooooooooooong mission (and considering I'm obsessed with fultoning everything, i take 1, 2 hours sometimes, even on side ops)

Hell if you miss a dialogue line or two, just go back to the log option and read back the transcripts.

The game is really good, but for those disappointed in some aspects of it they are justified. I prefer the tapes over codec, but I never really cared for the codec in the first place. The story being lackluster is the absolute most negative thing about this so far. Big Boss is damn near mute, it makes shit so awkward in a few cutscenes. Just dont go in there expecting it to be the same experience you've always had with Metal Gear. It got a bit assassin's creed in a way with the way the objectives and missions play out. I'm personally trying to view this game as its own entity and stop comparing it to the other games in the series.

Whats going on, why is everyone sayin TPP is shit? should I cancel my pre-order? WHATS HAPPENINGGGGGG

Ugh, crap. I liked how things were rather immediate.

Noticeable few second delay when you go into the weapons/inventory screen while it loads something up (with an indicator in the top right)

Might just go back into offline mode for the time being. I got my GZ save over anyway.
