How do you guys feel about MP regeneration?

I'm currently on Dragon Island and I fucking hate that I want to grind to raise the Party level and Archtypes and the game basically doesn't allow you to farm that long.

Obviously there are the Mage MP regeneration and some other passive skills, but it still feels really cheap, you can't farm that long.
Well you're not really supposed to grind in the dungeons. The game generally puts you at the intended level by just doing the side quests/bounties normally. You may need to grind some at the very end of the game but at that point, it's no longer an issue.

I'm surprised at how easy it is to max out your bonds. I'm close to the end and basically outside of 1 or 2 I was able to max out everyone. I'm sure a more competent player can do all in one go.

Some freaking rando mob in a late dungeon stole 130,000 Reeve from me. I guess that's what I get for hoarding and having 1.3M on me.

I gotta say that the Crimson Moon Sword Art animation for the Samurai Archetype is so stylish. Very satisfying to clear these low level enemies in one shot.

Damn, I'm jealous. I used up all my MAG on different Archetypes. Nice clip, is that the colosseum? I never really bothered with that place.
Also nevermind my previous post, I just maxed out all my Bonds and Royal Virtues. Much easier than in any Persona.

Thanks! And yeah, this clip I've made is from the Colosseum. I'm trying to do as much side content as possible. The Samurai archetype is very, very fun.

Also agreed that the social links & stats in this game are considerably easier to max out than in Persona games.

Persona had invisible gate that stops your progress if don’t answer right during S.link conversation and In Metaphor you can also see progress Royal Virtues and the fill up much faster than Social status in Persona.

Please dont tell me all of the tower big bosses have
full immunity

Only 1 though another one has an annoying attack that can be really tricky to deal with and ultimately gave me more trouble until I figured out the best strategy.

Edit: and I'll add that was actually the easiest of the 3 battles bearing in mind Almighty ignores all resistances and there are skills to make enemies weak to elemental attacks 👌

Is the annoyance big enough to not play the game? I dislike frustrating game elements.
I think he's talking about certain bosses that appear at the end of the game, all of which are completely optional and geared towards people that really want a challenge. This game is far removed from being frustrating.

Very minor spoiler about a follower:
Catherina’s level 7 follower bonus is pretty awesome. She’ll show up before every fight and smack an enemy for you. She does some good damage, sometimes even killing an enemy. And she does a big chunk of damage to bosses as well.

Requires Tolerance level 5 to progress her rank that far.

Very late/End game tip for anyone like me who wants to farm A-XP:

So I didn't realize that when you get to October that you can actually go to Louis' dungeon prior to the end of the month. I was using the three Dragon Trial towers prior to that to grind up my party by running up the towers, then going back to the entrance, then repeating. This was slow going.

But with 10 days left before deadline, I discovered that apparently the best end-game location to grind is in Louis' dungeon: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/410470-metaphor-refantazio/80865877

Yeah, it kinda becomes really really easy to grind those A-EXP items in the late game. By the final stretch, I had my character archetypes fixed and maxed, so wasn't really experimenting with them much, so was getting a crap ton of those items every few minutes.

Also, reading some Eupha slander in the last couple of pages. Her Summon spells were by far the strongest magic attacks in my party for the end-game.

She was weak as fuck and usually the first one to die in tougher battles, but she was also doing the most damage for me.

Yeah that dragon that hits AoE and reduces armor and attack was a godsend. Not to mention her skills had always the coolest animations going on. I like the one where she goes VISHNUUU and there is huge light damage coming out from the summon.

Regarding Eupha, I agree with adamsapple. She and the protag are far above the rest of party, and it's not really close. I could probably optimize my party better, but with their best archetypes, they're doing ~1000-2500 damage per attack with their MP moves compared to my other peeps doing 200-500 damage.

She’s pretty awesome although I’m wondering if Junah could potentially be even better. She has a higher magic stat and Masked Dancer lineage seems powerful as hell if used correctly, Gaining an entire archetype’s skill set (including passives) for the cost of an accessory slot seems almost busted. I bet her final archetype + maybe Elemental Master mask + whatever 4 inherited skills you choose could end up being the ultimate magic damage dealer.

I’m really close to the end and sunk way too much investment into my chosen party to switch now. Will definitely spend more time with her if I ever do a second play through.

You're not that far off. They kinda lump 3 new party members in a very quick span. You're gonna get Eupha in the next major story mission arc.

Nice. This game man......just when I think I have everything figured out, it throws a curve ball at me. Not complaining.....but gotdang tutorial windows popping up after 40 hours ain't usually a thing. Now I gotta figure out these special experiments.

lmao, just beat the final coliseum battle on my party's first turn, enemy didn't even have a chance to attack 😂

All sidequests done, all beetles found, all social links maxed, all virtues maxed, all books read, no guides used as always with a first playthrough. 5 days left to tackle what I assume is the final dungeon. Kind of annoyed it's easy to miss the cooking trophy for example with some ingredients now being impossible to obtain, only needed one final recipe to clear it. Oh well, there is always NG+.

Ah shit......glad you mentioned the cooking trophy. I haven't been paying near enough attention to that.

A fully powered up Eupha was pretty damn good for that. Start of battle > Eupha always gets first turn > AOE attack that wipes out everyone > next battle > rinse repeat.

I'm taking specifically about the final battle. Though I had Eupha she wasn't the main DMG dealer, Heismay as Tycoon with charm that doubles crit DMG, first attack took out half it's lifebar, Eupha next with heavy wind dmg, MC cast +4 turns, Strohl cast ATK+ as General, back to Heismay to wipe 👌

I enjoyed this game so much I just bought SMT Vengeance on Steam. Gonna start playing soon. Hopefully it has the same pull this had.
I have yet to play Vengeance myself but I played the original SMT V. It was very fun and addicting, but it is completely different. Metaphor is much closer to Persona than SMT, so temper your expectations.

I'm fairly sure one of the cooking related trophies was bugged for me.

RE: Maria.

After you max out her social link, there is supposed to be a trophy for cooking with her (she is only there to help you cook once you max her link out), I did that but it never triggered the trophy for me, and after that one time, any time I see her in the evening, she does not want to cook with me at night.

That's fine. More than anything, I just wanted more of this Turn Press combat system. Also don't mind being relieved of the calender system. Playing for some hours, I really like the setting and music and I'm guessing there is a whole world of collectable demons. The presentation is sadly not on par with Metaphor though, as expected.

I finally finished Metaphor Refantazio. Around 66 hours. And boy do I have some thoughts. Insanely long post incoming. :messenger_dizzy:

Let me start off by saying I love Atlus. I got introduced to Persona in 2020 through the Royal re-release, and played Persona 3 and 4 afterwards, including this year's Reload remake and of course SMT V. I'm a casual player and not a JRPG veteran at all really. Through these games I was able to familiarize myself with some of the big names behind these games. So when I heard that the main trio behind the Persona games was building a fantasy game, I was hyped as hell. I feel particularly connected to Persona 5 and its themes/messages.

I have to say that they managed to deliver a great game that deserves the praise and success it is getting. I love the world they have created here. However, it also falls short on some of its ambitions, with some weird decisions and directions that ultimately for me, keep it from standing equally to the Persona series it draws so much inspiration from.

The good:
  • As mentioned, amazing world. This game has its very own unique look and it feels like you are partaking in a grand adventure. You have all these different towns and settlements alongside the 8 tribes and you can truly feel the world fall into chaos once the race for the next king starts. It does all that despite not being an open world game.
  • Art direction is absolutely on point. In fact, it's so good that some of my highlights were the little moments where the crew stops on the road to take in some of these wonders. It's the pictures you end up giving to Maria.
  • Music. Shoji Meguro decided to take a completely different approach than what most would expect and included Buddhist chanting in a fantasy RPG. Wild stuff.
  • Combat. This is something that I feel is the best rendition yet. It's absurdly fun. The amount of combinations you can have through synthetic attacks, the items and skills that enable you to truly dominate fights is a step above what they accomplished with Persona 5. It's not something that is a revolution in combat design but some subtle additions and changes (like enabling your teammates to have different Archetypes, same as you) is something that adds up after a while.
  • Louis. At first I thought he would be your average run off the mill powerhungry villain but there's more to him and his story than what you initially think. I think he's one of the coolest villains Atlus made recently. Amazingly acted by Yuichi Nakamura.
  • The cast is wonderful. By the end of your journey you really feel and understand just how close you have gotten to them. They are lovely to be around.
  • Atmosphere is done so well that it feels like you are actually playing through a fantasy novel.
  • Bonds are great. Unlike in Persona, you actually have the possiblity to rank up all your "social links" and virtues in a single playthrough. In fact, you are able to see *everything* the game has to offer in a single playthrough without needing to manage your time as much because the game gives you ample time. Whenever you worry about not having enough time, trust me, you do.
  • Those damn snappy menus, man. Credit where credit is due.

The not so good stuff:
  • Story pacing. Some of these story moments in the game happen too quickly over a very short time period. While I thought that the game was paced well up until the Virga Island arc, it kind of loses its grip on that after and suddenly you'll have tons of twists and turns happen in what feels like 2 minutes. You get like 2 cast members way too late into the story for my liking.
  • The dungeons. I'm sorry but this is pretty lazy. You have the exact same labyrinth or forest or tower that all look and feel the same every time you do another bounty hunt. And after a while, the labyrinth ones are just annoying. I also *never* saw the point of engaging in battle while looking for a Neuras treasure or the actual bounty/boss of that area. So when you just want to beeline to your objective but you have to walk around a maze for the upteenth time it starts to get on your nerves.
  • Game pacing. What I mean with that is that the game is a little too generous with its timeframe and especially towards the end, you will find yourself having a bunch of days where you just don't have anything to do. Granted, it's better than the opposite, but still not ideal.
  • Another thing that falls under the same umbrella of game pacing is how they paced the levels. You see, this may be a very subjective issue, as I may just suck at games, but my problem was that I was basically breezing through the game on normal, having done *every* side quest except the Collosseum in Brilehaven and the 3 trials, and I ended up arriving at the very last dungeon of the game at level 50. The game did NOT like that. If you are reading this and are on a similar course, please reconsider and try to level up heavily. I was not prepared at all for what happened afterwards. I must have been underleveled by what, 25 levels or something? It was a huge slap in the face. You will want to tear your eyeballs out at that point. The final boss specifically is a *huge* pain in the ass. I actually had to reset to storyteller mode to just get through the game and even that took me hours. Which brings me to my next issue:
  • The final stretches of the campaign. Mind you, I like the story well enough and its themes that Metaphor wants to talk about. However, the last few hours, especially the last dungeon, drag. A lot. The enemies and bosses take forever to kill. Everyone feels like they have 20 healthbars. And again, the final boss in particular 4 PHASES! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! feels VERY inflated. Every time you think "ah..finally, this is it", another cutscene plays and it just keeps dragging. Mind you I was heavily underleveled, but I don't want to point the finger at myself if the game allowed me to reach this dungeon so easily in the first place.
  • Dialogue. Maybe I am misremembering, but I do not remember Persona being as filled to the brim with as much useless dialoge as Metaphor. I have read some posts here where people mention they have started skipping dialogue, and I fully understand why. There's a lot of fluff and a lot of repetitions from all characters that made my eyes roll sometimes. Enough, I get it! Let's just go!

Finally, this here is spoiler territory regarding the story/themes of Metaphor AND Persona 5:
The story is written well enough and while you can see a lot of plot developments MILES away, I didn't really feel like it detracted from my experience.

It's a story about facing your fears and anxieties and using that fuel to look forward, not succumbing to despair, hate or hopelessnes. I'm a sucker for stories like this because I connect with them and think it's 100% applicable to real life. Katsura Hashino keeps trying to spread these ideas and messages in every game he works on and I appreciate that. It's a beautiful story all around written to make you reflect.

I like how it breaks the 4th wall in the frame of a fantasy story, reaching out to you in the end credits with More hoping you can take some of these things presented in the game with you in your real life. And while I do like all of that, I have to say it's unfortunately too much of a retreat of Persona 5.

In the final hours I was constantly thinking "hey...I already saw this exact thing in Persona 5!". The whole Royal Sceptre and anxiety plotline, people in the kingdom reaching out to you giving you hope..it's literally exactly the same as the last section of P5. Just replace the Royal Sceptre with Mementos and there you go. It's because of it being too much of an almost exact retreat that it didn't hit me as hard as Persona 5 did. If this was my first Atlus game I probably would be singing a different tune, but it's not my first rodeo. I didn't really have that same reaction to P3 or P4, so I hope next time, Hashino tries to do something else or at the very least tries to deliver his messages a little bit more differently. Hell, the moment the MC finally deals the killing blow to Louis with his new Archetype form was so damn similar to how Joker with his upgraded Persona struck down Yaldabaoth.

What also disappointed me is how the game handled Louis at the very end. Throughout the entire campaign up until the final fight Louis has such an insanely strong presence, the way he goes on about his ideals while being innocent (well, mostly) and ending up to be a fateful foil to the MC was super cool, but then you just kill him with a slash and that's it? I wished and moreso *expected* there to be some parting words and an additional cutscene with him atleast. It felt weirdly rushed. As I said with the post Virga Island-pacing, some things are too fast and some too slow afterwards. The biggest and nicest surprise was the epiloge though. Seeing how the new king goes on about his day, sneaking out of the palace thanks to his adventurous nature, listening to the commonfolk and seeing all your friends having taken up all those important posts alongside you is a heartwarming sight. More, or rather, the previous king, being able to peacefully and pridefully pass on was a nice addition too. Seeing the crew go out and about adventuring to distant places was a beautiful sight and send off.

Overall, I'm comfortable giving this game a great 8/10. Any Atlus fan should play this, but if you were to ask me, the people that really need to play this are people that never played an Atlus game or JRPG before. What Persona 5 was to me Metaphor could be for someone else.

I'm doing the goblin cave quest, right at the start, where you need wisdom level 2 for Hikasa Yoko. These goblin fucks are seriously kicking my ass, wtf :D . I'm in with Seeker lvl 09, Warrior 08, Knight 09.

I feel like I'm in Goblin Slayer ):

e: belega corridor
e2: it'd be easy if i had mana. Not-Ryuji's slasher aoe combo does great damage. I'm really worried about the boss fight :D Luckily enough this game has somewhat generous auto saves, it seems. More generous that persona at least.

Kurotri Kurotri about what I feel too. And feels nice another person that struggled immensely in that final fight. It's such an insane endurance run. I can't believe people aren't making a bigger fuss about it lol.

I absolutely feel its biggest drawback is the dialogue and the sheer volume of it, in most cases just being mere repetition or extremely blunt exposition. The game needed to just shut up in several places and let the imagery do the talking instead. The game missed out on some emotional beats by weighing them down with talking.

Just imagine everyone in real life talked like they do in Metaphor.

“Hey kids I think I’ll make some Kraft Mac n Cheese for lunch”

“Great idea! Eating some lunch could be just what we needed to boost our energy levels”

“We have all these boxes of mac n cheese in our cupboard but they won’t do us any good just sitting there. Someone needs to cook them. So I say, let’s make that Mac n cheese!”

“In my village, it is always said that eating lunch is an essential part of daily living.”

Uh.. thanks for the insightful commentary. Did you suffer some head trauma recently?

Totally agree. So. Much. Talking. And most of the time it’s just characters standing there while they’re yapping.

And not just the major scenes. Every little thing has some little extra useless bit of dialog or animation that slows you down and it really adds up over time. Buying something from the shop? A few lines of dialog before and after you buy. Picking a place to go on the map? A few party members comment about your destination. Unlocking a new archetype? Video + paragraph of text. Opening a treasue chest? Same little cutscene every time. Opening a door? Wait a couple seconds for hero to move into place to do their door opening animation. Morning? Dialog. Evening? Dialog. Going to sleep? Same “the day is over” cutscene every day.

It’s like death by 1000 cuts. Feels like the game is constantly killing your momentum and it really started to wear on me over time. Didn’t totally ruin the game for me but it was very annoying.

Love this post. Thanks for sharing.

I missed that one too 🤷🏻‍♂️

I maxed her social link fast

AA addition is nice. Between that and the performance mod I am pretty happy with now this game is looking and running now.

I have had really limited gaming time these days but I am around 20 hours in now working my way through the second "main" dungeon.

How many of these big dungeons are there? Like the ones that take a bunch of days to finish.
