Not possible yet.

Also I forgot to say that 4A games are looking for PS3 programmer and network programmer.

Finished it.

The great game with soul but with huge flaws also. And stealth was ok, I got both achievments for it. But they should've made more clear how to fight some monsters like librarians and biomass. I'd to watch youtube walkthroughs to get through the biomass. Also quite a lot of trial and error, and I hate it.

But after I've finished it, I didn't want to quit. I sat in the menu, listening to the guitar. And now I rewatch some episodes in my head and that means that the game is good. They should polish the gameplay and Metro 2034 could be a masterpiece.

Graphics actaully look next-gen if you crank all options to the max including tesselation and DOF. Looks photorealistic finally.

Gonna pick up this game when my GTX480 arrives :D. Does anyone know if there is a modding community for this game? I've heard that the A.I is abysmal so that's what I really want to find a mod for. Does such a beast even exist? Thanks.

No there is no such thing.

Does this game get any better? I'm just a few chapters in and atmosphere aside the game is getting close to unplayable for me...just horrific gunplay.

It gets worse honestly. The game is really only worth it if you dig thick atmosphere in your games.

Shit, I was just about to ask my own "does it get better?" question. I'm at the end of act 4. I don't understand the story at all. What the hell are these things that are attacking us over and over and over? that seems like the most basic question to get answered. Why am I the chosen one again? Chosen to do what exactly?

The graphics and atmosphere are the only thing that's keeping me going to be honest. The gunplay feels like shit, and the combat just isn't satisfying.

I find the comments about the gunplay confusing, were you expecting pixel-perfect accuracy with homemade weapons and rusty ammo in a post-apocalyptic world? MW2 this aint.

I would say that gamers are spoiled, or you just don't get it, but on the other hand atmosphere is no excuse if you're not having fun I guess. You do get better weapons later and there is enough military-grade ammo available to use freely in later levels, but if it didn't suck you in enough to get past the opening stages maybe you won't enjoy the rest. Or change the difficulty to easy and just mow your way to the end.

I though it was really great. Like the Condemned team re-imagined Fallout 3 or something. The incidental dialogue was one of the real highlights, even guards conversations as you sneak through levels was pretty interesting. The most recent game I got all the achievements in and I enjoyed my time with it immensely.

Yeah the story was confusing to me as well. Confusing on like MW2 levels of confusing.

I understand that they're trying to do something different than CoD; I understand that they want you to feel like you're fighting against the horde with a rusty pea shooter. But I don't think they got it right. The aiming feels floaty and laggy to me, and as other people mentioned the bullet soaking enemies don't really react to your shots. It's just not satisfying combat to me.

I bought this game a few days ago and am now on chapter 3.

The atmosphere is pretty good. The markets are some of the most believable I have ever seen in a game. Artyom's room is a particular highlight - gorgeous lighting effects, and textures which may as well be 8 mega-pixel photos pasted on the walls. Absolutely jaw dropping at times.

That said, once you venture into the Metro tunnels things become repetitive - the same glowing lichens, steelwork tunnels, fog effects and hazy light rays over and over and over.... It's pretty, don't get me wrong - perhaps even the new graphics king in a lot of ways - but it grinds after a couple of hours of skulking in the dark. 4A don't even try to spice things up in the outdoors sections either. It's like a surprise, "oh i'm outside!", but once you've seen the same twisted tree trunk for the billionth time you start to get a little desperate.

My biggest gripe with the game however is the pacing and storyline - it's complete shit. Specifically the narration: Artyom (in English) has one of the dullest monotone voices i've heard in a long time. I'm not expecting him to sound jolly like some of the other Russians in the game, but as the leading role he certainly kills my interest. I tried switching to Russian, but that was like going from 1 all the way up to 10 on the light-hearted drunkard scale.

The plot is moving at a snail's pace, and fuck all seems to have happened. All I know is that i'm trying to get somewhere, but the game is placing too much emphasis on the petty deviations rather than the overall excitement of the journey.
Bourbon just got kidnapped, which is cool I guess
, but it's just a cheap excuse to throw a stealth mission in there and peddle some Steam achievements.

Finally, in a strange twist of opinion, I actually think the gunplay is my favourite part of the game. The guns all feel very ramshackle, like Fallout 3 taken to new extremes. They behave exactly how i'd expect them to. I switched off the crosshair as well to further enhance the experience. And let me tell you, when a pack of dog mutant things comes at me, as well as a flying 'demon', and i'm running out of ammo, this game is golden.

Silenced weapon and shooting lights.

Think Splinter Cell.

I managed to get through it mostly unscathed after some trial and error. The error was on my end since I didn't expect the stealth to work as well as it did. It's not perfect, and I did have to result to grenade spamming the last 5-7 guys, but I got pretty far in the shadows.

Ooh. Throwing knives too. Those things are great for sneaking. Pretty much a necessity since they are one hit kill.

Thanks! I've made it to the end of chapter 4. I'm really running low on ammo. Now I mostly just dart around with the knife.

I did notice some glitches. The best was that I threw a knife into a guy's head in the library, he was wearing a gasmask - basically the guy dropped to the ground but the gasmask stayed floating in midair, with the knife floating exactly where it was between the gasmask's straps.. lol.

I don't now people what's wrong with the plot for you. It's quite simple and straightforward at the beginning, gets more layered at the end.

Your station is attacked by the new breed of mutants which are the next step of mutant evolution. They aren't just beasts anymore, they are like race now. They are fucking up people brains using telepathy and leaving them as empty shells. These mutants aren't common thing in the Metro but people heard of them and recognize them as a great threat. Nobody really knows anything about them. The Hunter goes in their territory to explore and asks you to get his message to the certain people if he does not return. Then he doesn't return and you're fulfilling your promise by getting his message through all these stations and tunnels until a certain moment in the story. You just go there and your main mission is to survive. When you reach the destination there's another story.

You're chosen one because you happened to be at the the certain place at the certain time. Things are just happening. You're not a chosen one actually, you're just some dude with "potential" that needs to get Hunters's message to the certain people about this new breed of supernatural mutants. Nobody is really better than you and nobody is worse. You just happened to be with the Hunter and he had seen some "spark" in you because, you know, people can see/feel some things about other people. And he had sensed that you're less vulnerable to this telepathic shit in tunnels and has some natural survival skills (judging from your behaviour during mutants attack).

I don't know what's "better" for you but it definitely goes up in scale at the end. But if the story is confusing now, then it becomes much more confusing in the last chapters.

Actually this level is quite funny. I ended up killing just two dudes with throwing knives.

I don't know if you read the book or something, but the plot is not straight forward, it's really confusing because they do a really terrible job of conveying information. Motives are never really clear and the enemy is never really explained that well. Like I said, it's as bad as Modern Warfare 2 as both need you to pretty much go read the wiki to figure out what the hell is going on.

And you know you can just quote those three people in one post right?

No, I didn't read the book (didn't like the writing), but what kind of explanation do you need for an enemy? Bandits are just bandits, they always were and always will be in all societies. Fascists = ultranationlists (also people striving for conservative tirannic order). You can find people like them in every country. Communists? That's just russian thing but you can call them ultrasocialists :D And again you can find socialist types in every society. The collapse of the everyday comfortable life and basic need to survive tend to awake extremes in people, so there you have it.

Do you need an explanation for the Dark Ones? That's actually a mystery you should resolve. And that's a mystery that might be not resolved, because mysteries are like that. All you need to know from Artyom's point of view is that Dark Ones are going to destroy your station and you must stop them. You can make some hipothesis about who they are, but that's up to you and every other player. People in Metro world are confined to their stations they don't know shit about what happens on the surface or even at other stations. And so are you.

Quick question: Should I buy the auto shotty or will there be one laying around up ahead? I just got the second metro station(somewhere on the road to
Riga
)

I noticed they're selling the pneumatic rifle at a high price, too bad I threw one out on the way as it ran out of ammo and I was desperate.

Ok, then I'll pass. I had to reload from dead city 2 back to the station because I didn't have enough filters(17) anyway. :lol

Really enjoying the game so far. The metro stations are a unique experience, the density of the people crammed in together along with the detail... great stuff. Makes me wonder how Fallout 3 would have turned out if those subway systems and Rivet City were replaced by this stuff.

This is also the first time I actually get to play a game in Russian. If any bilingual people are reading, if you ever get to play a game in another language you are fluent in, you gotta try it. After the initial curiosity wore out, I found myself thinking in Russian as I played. Now, this is nothing special in everyday social interaction, but it's the first time I've had that happen with a game. Awesome.

Question for 360 version :

Do the armors stack? I'm at the part where you get get both the body armor, and the spy armor with the goggles. I want to make sure I'm not wasting money by buying both.

Also, what is everyone doing control wise? I've got the default sensitivity right now, is there a better way?

Really enjoying this so far, surprise of the year right now. I hadn't even heard of it until my brother gave it to me.

I just got to the Soviet front lines. Is it worth buying anything from the merchants? I think I made the mistake of buying an upgraded handgun at the beginning and I have no military grade bullets to get some of the cooler weapons for sale.

Is there a trick to finding more money? So far it has been pretty scarce.

One of the guys there will be selling either a sneak suit or a armor suit if you're at the place I think you're at, it's not the regular shop just a guy standing near it, i missed it my first time through.

You should explore areas a lot (Dead City especially). You can find some 1-3 bullets stashes in the Stations. I had about 200 military grade ammo by the time I was to go to the Frontlines.

Hey, some good news:

Metro 2033 has been 'very profitable' for THQ, CEO says

Metro 2033 was released at the tail end of publisher THQ's last fiscal year, which ended March 31. With only two weeks of sales before the close of the fiscal fourth quarter, the 4A Games-developed title was not a huge factor in THQ's trumpeted turnaround. Still, THQ CEO Brain Farrell took a few moments during the company's earnings call today to highlight the game's sales to date, which contributed to fourth quarter sales growth for the publisher and could be a standout figure in its first quarter of the new fiscal year. "It's a very profitable title for us," Farrell said, without disclosing a number.

Farrell did reveal that Europe has accounted for roughly two-thirds of Metro 2033 sales, as forecast by the publisher, with North America buying up the remaining units sold. "A lot of the sales were done on PC," he added, "and a lot of the sales were also done through digital mechanisms that don't get captured by any service."

The CEO attributed profits to the game's low-cost development model, "so when we get to even pretty modest levels of sales, we're still making good money." (First-time, Eastern European studios make cheap games, apparently.) "And we like that model going forward," Farrell noted, when it produces a high-quality game.

Just started this last night (360) and man did it grab me by the throat! Some truly scary, high anxiety, WTF moments in what is a very good looking game.

I love the gunplay, I'm doing it with no crosshairs and no auto aim. I would like to get rid of the HUD too and just rely on the gun's bullet counts but I can't find that option.

Also, come on guys, don't lie.
You got rolled by Trixie's pimp too right? RIGHT? After my first nerve-wracking encounter I thought a little comfort and companionship was in order. Man, I lost around 50 bullets to that guy. My wife laughed at me.

You could reload the checkpoint, it saves right before
you start talking to her. You'll need these 50 bullets :D

Post here if you stuck somewhere or find it too difficult - there are always pretty easy alternative ways/tactics. And don't save money on gas mask filters, you'll need them too.

So, I decided to buy the stealth suit, but my goggles seem to be out of batteries? It shuts down a split second after I put them on and don't come back on. Any way to buy a battery? Or is that suppose to happen in a non shooty area?

Also, the stealth suit and a silenced and scoped pistol pretty much clean me out. Anything I should consider before giving my life savings away in about a 30 second span? :lol

Hold the flashlight button down to bring out the hand-held generator. Crank that up and they should work fine. I played through almost the entirety of the game without knowing that because I missed some random prompt shown on the screen in the beginning of the game for 5 seconds and then never shown again and not even explained in the menus.

That's why ditching paper manuals and putting them into menus is a wise decision. But the game is really light on hints, that's lame.

This game is definitely not "streamlined" or "easy to pick up and play" or whatever trendy term people use these days. It doesn't seem to be a conscious choice either. The reward only mentality and focus testing are probably unheard of concepts to them. :lol Not saying that doesn't come back to bite you on occasion, but for the most part I'm very happy that there's someone out there still doing things that way.

I just went through a stealthy level in Metro and even without playing the new Splinter Cell, I would bet money that Metro 2033 checked off the majority of the things Ubisoft stayed as far away from as possible. Take the night vision mechanic as an example. It's completely optional to have it at all, you can only buy it(as far as I can tell) as a part of a 100 bullet upgrage(which is a huge amount for this game) and ofcourse nobody is gonna come out and tell you that there's a long ass stealthy section ahead. Then, you have a manually cranked, hand held generator that you have to charge to get any life out of it at all, so you're having to find a safe location to recharge the damn thing. And to top it off, it doesn't even work all that well. Bright lights(like the flashlight on every bad guy's cap) blind you, especially dark areas are still hard to navigate and it limits your peripheral vision. Oh, and some bad guys have goggles too and full body armor/helmet so if you shoot one you pretty much alert everyone of your exact location... it doesn't matter if you're crouching in the dark with a silenced pistol or not.

Well, that's good but it has nothing to do with the fact that they could put up a hint when your night-vision is low on batteries. It's not like it would compromise gameplay, it just tells you that you can use it.

Stealth is quite easy in this game by the way. Always stay in shadow, kill the lights. I got both stealth achievements and wish there were more stealth sections.

I'm just coming off of Demon's Souls so I'm rather enjoying the lack of hand holding. It's quite a challenging game for me on Normal.

Got through my first outdoor foray. Talk about tension! You want to take your time and explore every nook and cranny but then you eat through filters. Once I had made it to a safe spot where my guide was waiting for me and had to rush around like a mad man because I was on my last filter and was wheezing like crazy! That is some punishing tension right there, when you have to pay to BREATHE!

After that there was a cool stealth bit. I wasn't expecting full-on stealth from the game but it works quite well. Loving the game so far but this game is tense like Condemned! I can only play for a couple hours at a time before I need to switch to something else. :D

Started playing it this week on 360, got to chapter 5.

Loving it so far. Really a great experience. The ghost walk level was just fantastic.

Finished up today. Got to see
both endings. The one where you knock down the guidance system is a little too contrived for my tastes. The default ending makes a lot more sense.

I thought the best parts, besides the non combat areas, were anything above ground, possibly excluding the
library
Anytime they had an area that felt interconnected and open for exploration, it was great. The crumpled housing project is the perfect example. Towards the end it did get very scripted and linear, oh well.

I thought it was great and different experience over all. I do keep thinking that all the awesome parts that stand out are "open world" elements that were seamlessly weaved into a great, linear experience. Which brings me to my real point. I hope Metro2033 did well enough. Not only well enough to merit another title from this studio on consoles, but maybe entice the team that's putting out the STALKER games to finally port something. The 2 games being in the same universe makes it that much more painful if we don't see a 360 version some time down the line.

It was profitable, see a few posts above.

And these games aren't in the same universe. 4A Games and GSC are two separate competing companies. 4A games was founded by people who left GSC. Also there is a rumour that GSC is considering CryEngine 3 for STALKER 2.

I saw the article, my concern is if the xbox360 port specifically was ultimately worth doing financially. It kind of skirts around that issue. I really hope it was considering I don't have a gaming pc. If GSC end up using CryEngine 3, that would be a great sign. Even a simple port of the older STALKER games to XBLA would be awesome.

Also, I don't know about the English dub, but in Russian, Khan specifically mentions stalkers in one of the conversations he has with Artyom. It's part of his warnings about how Artyom is becoming a lot like the Hunters etc.

"Stalker" is just a word now, not bound to a particular unvierse. Even STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl isn't in the same universe with "The Roadside Picnic" from which it has taken a lot of core elements.

STALKER games can't be ported because the core engine is very old (2001-2002).

Digital Foundry: But if you had just done a straight port of the X-Ray engine, how would it have worked out on PS3 and 360?

Oles Shishkovstov
: That would be extremely difficult. A straight port will not fit into memory even without all the textures, all the sounds and all the geometry. And then it will work at around one to three frames per second. But that doesn't matter because without textures and geometry, you cannot see those frames! That's my personal opinion, but it would probably be wise for GSC to wait for another generation of consoles.

TTG said:

and they are looking for PS3 programmers now, so I think console versions will follow.
