Metroid Dread lttp kindda disappointed

I know nobody cares but wanted to share I'm almost done with the game, currently just reached the last boss.

I've played almost all the Metroid series, missed Federation, Echoes and the 3ds samus returns.

Actually just wanted to vent out how much i dislike their choice of having so many boss encounters, repetitive and hard. Specially those chozo soldiers god damn, why? they're just filler imo, feels like playing smash bros in hard.

I love Metroid for Samus, the character progression and exploring all the environments solving the puzzles, having a mind map of the world that just feels good, not about grinding battles over and over and over to be able to get the muscle memory to beat them, I'm too tired old and without time to spend on grinding. But I hate leaving games unfinished so I'll just push through the pain, again. (as I've done through all from software games, such a drag, to me the challenge is just a necessity to continue through the game, so all these games just stress me out, but i love the lore and i hate watching others playing, thus I just suffer xD)

Anyway, graphics wise it's beautiful!
gameplay wise its perfect. (character controller is chef's kiss)
UI is crap.
Sound and music is nice.

end of rant, will report back once i beat the damn Raven Beak 🙄, see you in I guess several days...

thanks for reading if you did :)

edit: took several tries for the last boss, at least there was a checkpoint at one part i fckd up and thought i would have to do the whole battle again...

I think the combat system and gameplay is some of the best out there.

But agree, too many bosses break the pacing. Map is not very good metroidvania map. Hard to explore and reach previously missed upgrades.

At the end I just went for final boss with whatever I had.

My only problem with the game is the atrocious load times between zones.

That said, I had so much more fun the second time through. Very satisfying blasting through the game and doing quick kills on bosses.

The best part was the end when the game ended and it was over.
I really didn't like the way the game tried to really hammer it in on how weak and vulnerable she is, the characterization reminded me of the pant shitting version of Luigi and those Luigi Mansion games. Samus is a badass bitch and is never shook. Yes it's part of the trope wear she gets depowered at the beginning but they keep hitting on it.

Oh, second best part was when I traded it in to GameStop for much more than I paid for it. Physical baby!

I had a great time with it. One of the only metroidvanias that I fully completed in a while. Loved it. Couldn't finish the prince of persia one but did beat Dread and loved every second, so there's that. I liked that it kinda had a survival horror element with the emmis(or whatever) that mixed things up. The timing on that counter though, harder than sekiro on steroids.

I'd say it's a good 8/10 game, taking off points for mostly forgettable music and environments.

Some of the more frustrating parts will probably keep me from ever revisiting. I'll just play Super or Prime again if I need a fix.

What time is it?

The design decisions while understandable, smart, and thoughtful are also why I didn't care for the game much. I want to be lost in these types of games and Dread just doesn't provide that feeling. I also hated parrying in the Metroid 2 remake and Dread didn't change my mind there. The EMMI sections were also tedious. The items locked behind gates that required you to use your movement abilities was easily the highlight of the game.

I liked it but went 7/10. It felt like a 3rd party Metroid game. The gameplay was fine but I loathed the map. It was difficult to understand and wasn’t logical.

I finally played the 3DS Samus Returns remake right after and thought it was a better game. It feels a lot like Dread but the map, exploration and upgrade paths felt more Metroid.

I’ll take Super Metroid, Fusion and Zero Mission any day over both of them. I will say, the last fight and ending is pretty epic in Dread though.

I liked it.
It thought it had solid gameplay, nice presentation and I actually found the bosses to be one of the better parts of the game.
The secrets were fun to get to but I wish there was more to them, it would have been nice to find some proper optional areas and bosses but instead most secret are just a small room with a basic upgrade.

That said, I don't think it's as good as other similar games that cost half as much (Ori 2, Hollow Knight, Rogue Legacy 2 and more recently Nine Sols, to name a few).
Also some of the statements by reviewers were puzzling. I enjoyed the bosses but some reviews were calling them "some of the best bosses of all time" which is just hyperbole on another level.

Finished the game would not tell people it’s a 2d metroid but i loved it

Overall a great game, but it does have some issues.

My biggest issues with the game are the mediocre soundtrack and the map is overly difficult to traverse. There's a bit too many gotcha's when you're trying to simply traverse to a spot in the map, even towards the end of the game when you have all upgrades and portals. It's similar to Link Between Worlds, where just getting somewhere seems to be too much work, "Oh I forgot, there's this arbitrary obstacle here that I have to get around that is hard to identify on the map sub screen".

Other than that, the game plays great, looks great and brings plenty of new things to the 2D Metroid table.

Dread's middle of the pack imo (my last list put it at 6 out of 13).

The bosses are one of the game's best features. It's a point that's obvious especially on replay on higher difficulties. They're all very fair and very well considered. Challenging in a good way, but you also have to engage with all the game's systems to really see that. You can brute force it but that can and will be less fun comparatively. I hated those soldier guys too first time but when I had to really learn the fights and not just tank to victory, I had a good time.

On the flip side, the environments are not as clean at all. Very obvious on the OHKO mode where some stray thing hits you that's very hard to avoid while traversing the level. I'm scared all the time but I'm not sure in the best way lol. Also, unlike some people itt I got lost a few times and found refinding the path to be pretty frustrating. Bad loading times didn't help.

Don't agree on the music - it's a nothingburger like in Samus Returns. AM2R and the Primes blow it away.

I dropped it extremely early, when those robots started chasing me. I hate shit like that in games. I'll never go back to it. Shame, since I was really wanting a 2D Metroid.
Dude me to... I stopped right after it because fuck that I can't stand feeling like rushed when I want to explore and just check things out. Like I don't mind a chase thing once and you kill it but those just never quit from what I read, absolutely hated that so just dropped it

Exactly the same for me. Easily the worst Metroid game I've played. I hated everything about it.

It makes me feel a little better that I'm not the only one who thought that way. I did try to get past it a few times, but it just zapped any enjoyment I had from the game. I liked it just fine otherwise.

I didn't mind the bosses but I couldn't stand the extreme linearity and awful story.

One of the reasons i've moved away from nintendo is the simple fact that they can't tell an epic to great story to save there lives anymore. I'm someone who requires storytelling as i've grown up and nintendo simply can't do it most of the time. Dread is just another example of bad storytelling.

Best game in the last 20 years. If you don't like it.. you are the problem.

or you just don't like it.. but that wasn't dramatic enough. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Yea totally and not to mention it was from what I remember super tedious fighting that thing, like I remember thinking ok whatever I'll deal with it and he was just a bitch, like if you weren't perfect on something it was over.. I just absolutely hate things like that same with timers of anything, I find them zero fun.

Metroid Dread map is one of the worst maps to navigate in a metroidvania game ever... but the progression is excelent... go back to initial areas and steamroll everyone and everything is always great to see :-D

Like it well enough. Really enjoyed the tension of the encounters with the Samus clone-thing (can't remember the actual name of it)

it's good, there's a smorgasbord of metriodvanias out there though and you can definitely find better.

but again it's good enough if you haven't played all the others..

Dread has the weakest map/level-design of all 2D games. You are basically on rails. Areas are too large and samey to easily memorize, no identity. Teleporters suck. Just let me explore and understand that I must backtrack... but, this implies that I have some elements that help me remember places lol, which is hardly ever the case in this game. What doesn't help are the huge rooms with the EMMI that look all the same in all the areas.

Gameplay is good, and bosses too. Well made encounters.

First Metroid game I ever completed and I really enjoyed it, did not expect the difficulty though but it was manageable once you mastered counters.

Dread felt/looked like an iOS circa iphone 6 attempt at a Metroid game with 4 biomes and crappy map design that funnels you from destination to destination while being marginally deeper than Super Mario Run. Good sound design and music though. It's not terrible to be honest it's just that it could have been so much more than what it was.

The interactive cutscenes with the semi-QTEs are awesome; it plays so damn good. I just wish the music was better, and so were the graphics.

It had the movement and graphics and sound.

But the pacing and difficulty were up and down.

Lacking some in the craftsmanship department in other words.

But I finished it. Helped my enjoyment that it was 2d. And if they put out another one I would buy it.

I agree with OP on some of his points. I thought EMMI was overused. I would have liked maybe a 3rd of the EMMI encounters. I found it annoying pretty quickly. Felt like an Alien, Terminator, or Nemesis always chasing you. A little too much.

Other than not have an easier mode, Metroid Dread has a lot of good ideas. I hope their next 2d Metroid ( I assume it is Super Metroid remake), is much improved.

Graphics, it looked great, EXCEPT…the damn camera. Why the HELL is the camera usually panned out too far? I assume this was a technical decision to make sure the game runs at 60fps.

haha yeah i was squinting looking at the screen 10cm from my face.

yeah actually, tbh I muted the game at boss encounters to concentrate, so yeah music is not great and definitely no comparison against other entries.

OP is correct that the character control is best in class - I was little disappointed personally by how safe they played it with the upgrades and power-ups.

It's basically all the same shit from Super Metroid all over again - that's fine for a little nostalgia bait but I want to see newer ideas.

Maybe Ori or Hollow Knight is more your speed.
Ori 1 i liked, the second is on my backlog for some day. hollow Knight i don't like the insects theme otherwise i would.
And as i said i love Metroid series have played most of them. but this one derailed (not as much as other m ofc)

It was alright, played through it a bit too fast. Then I got stuck at the end boss. After lots of attempts I just watched the ending on YouTube. Haven’t touched it since. Had the same problem with Metroid Prime. It’s like the game isn’t training you properly enough because it’s too easy and out of a sudden the end boss is another level.

Or maybe I’m just too bad.
Would rank it lower than the classics, with SM on 1, Fusion on 2

The last boss of Prime telegraphs exactly what you need to do.

The one at Dread is stupid af because if you don't get the counter it doesn't move on.
