Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | Review Thread

No, actually it's that I have a brand new Switch 2 still in the box it was delivered in, one that I essentially bought just to play this game specifically. It's still in the box because I was waiting for the reviews for this to come out before I decided what to do with it.

But given what I've read in reviews i've decided that there is no urgent need for me to play this game right now and i'm going to stick to my previous plan which was to consider buying one after they bring out the inevitable OLED model with build quality improvements. I mean I wasn't impressed by the reviews of the Switch 2 screen and the Switch 2 specific exclusives are very thin on the ground.

So I'll be returning (not selling) this expensive purchase (for a full refund) and not buying a brand-new full price game for it either, because it doesn't feel like a must-buy at the moment at all. The combined cost of the Switch 2 and Prime 4 at full price is quite significant for a game I am now no longer super excited by. I can play the game in a couple of years. With the PS5. there are games that i'm excited about playing soon and I have few reservations about the hardware or the range of exclusives available now.

This seems pretty sensible to me. How this contradicts me being a Metroid Prime fan, I don't know. But again, you're just instantly going straight to conspiracy theories when simply encountering somebody with different opinions to you. It's clearly an instinct for you. Somebody's saying something I disagree with? Ok, time to try to undermine them with vague insinuations. Because I've done something you wouldn't I can't REALLY be a Metroid Prime fan, can I? I can't REALLY have completed all the games. I am probably being paid by someone to make sceptical comments about a Nintendo game. It's completely embarassing and immature that this is how you react - to immedietly start casting aspersions, slinging mud, making darks hints etc all while providing zero evidence for anything.

I played the games; I loved the games. I was super excited about this. I literally bought a fucking console that i'm otherwise not at all keen on right now just on the possibility of this game being good. Yeah, that sounds like somebody who secretly hates the Prime games, hates Nintendo, hates fun etc. Sure. It's just so insulting when you have a genuine and abiding passion for this series and are also quite excited about getting back into Nintendo gaming at some point. And all these sly insinuations are just because a brand fanboy is desperate to protect the brand.

Here's a proposal: I'll keep the Switch 2 and buy MP4 if you send me the money to cover both. If not, I'll do whatever the fuck I like with my money without it somehow meaning i'm not actually a fan of the previous games. You should VENMO me the lot, as the ultimate mega-fan of Prime or whatever.
haters gonna hate didnt read GIF

Yes, you give intense ''not bothered'' energy throughout this discussion.
You didn't accuse me of being bothered so I didn't say I'm not or anything like it for this reply to make any sense, but then again, few of your posts make sense, constantly telling folks they haven't played it so can't claim it's good/ok/not bad like one can only claim/agree it's bad before playing, lol.
I've simply used my personal interpretation of the reviews to guide my purchasing decision at this time. That's very normal.
Idk, the first time you tried to slander me by creatively reinterpreting a post of mine into something completely different to what I actually said you didn't seem to have even read the negative reviews you swear by (and there were even fewer at the time), just going by the mc and guessing the why.

But if that's all you've been doing, deciding to not buy the game, Idk why you have so many posts in here, how many times can you announce you won't buy it? We got it, good for you, enjoy your time playing and doing things you like which is, I guess, chasing after folks who feel different atm 🤷‍♂️

Yeah probably. I enjoyed Other M even though it was bad. I'm not expecting this to be anywhere near that.
Better brace yourself, the French authority of the renowned Gamekult that the other authority Montauk trusts with his life rated Other M, Hunters, Pinball, all a higher grade (and all equally, as well as the same as Dread & Samus Returns) and only Federation Force the same low grade as Prime 4 🤷‍♂️

"I have a great idea, Samus! Oh, uh, can I call you Samus? Yes? No?... Maybe?"

"I'm not hearing a no. Still not hearing a no. Oh! That look you just gave me, that's a no, isn't it?"

"Definitely a no. Well, anyway, I have a great idea , Samu - uh, Galactic space lady person. What if we... check the map!"

"If we check the map, we can get our bearings in the region! Great idea huh, Sam, er, Mrs Aran?"

"Is it Mrs Aran or Miss Aran? Is there a Mr Aran at home? Does he perhaps morph into a cube? I'm asking for a friend."

When green haired millennial cat lady writers try to inject buffy the vampire slayer style dialogue into every single popular franchise they take control of, they're improving it for you. You're welcome.

It was meant to be a joke

Like, exaggerating a little bit for effect

And there it is.

Nintendo has been consumed.

Exactly, I've been seeing that in modern games and it's becoming way more prevalent than it ever should. What's the point of playing a game that gives away all the solutions? How's that even fun beyond pressing buttons and some visual spectacle?

You mean this shit, right? Constant yappin' that brings nothing to the table besides taking you out of the game?

I miss older games man, it's true that less is more.

I've never claimed the game is bad. The most you can ever say about a game you haven't played is what elements of it seem like, i.e. it sounds/looks bad. You're assessing snippets.

I've simply used my personal interpretation of the reviews to guide my purchasing decision at this time. That's very normal.

It doesn't mean I'm having my own opinion supplied for me, it means that I've used feedback on the product to decide if want to purchase it now and all the expense that would entail. Which happens to include a Switch 2 as someone who doesn't own one.

Otherwise I've just passed comment on media from the game, reviews of the game and what I think about them. Bizarre that you can't grasp that this doesn't mean I have decided what my own opinion of the game is - I indeed haven't played and would only offer my considered opinion or review if I had.

I will play the game one day and then I will get to see what I think of it for myself. Obviously I hope that when that day comes I will find myself completely agreeing with the most positive reviews and will find the elements I am currently critical of (and worried about) to be of minor importance to the game as a whole.

But this is all just so blindingly obvious as a position; why does it need to be explained?

I am only capable of judging specific elements of the game that I have seen or read about in media and reviews. I do not intend to spoil the narrative of the game so I can't do more than that unless I play it.

That's not the same as pretending that those isolated takes somehow form a legitimate review of the game - I simply am not in the position of being able to do that and I have not attempted to do so. But you're still shitting your slacks as if I've said "here's my review of the game I haven't played".

Also, I repeat the offer to you - if you think it's so important for me to play this game through to the end before, uh, commenting on reviews and media (???) then please VENMO me the cost of a Switch 2 and a copy of the game and I will do that immediately.

Otherwise I need to decide what I want to spend all my money on and right now I'm sad to say that it isn't this game.

Jesus just return your Switch 2 instead of making it a whole dramatic deal lmao

Again, have no idea what imaginary conversations you've been having, I've not been trying to convince you to do anything, you even said yourself in a previous post that I've not said anything good about the game. I don't have a Switch1/2/don't intend to buy one, just having fun in a great thread!

Probably a Stranger Things related reference. Their first ideas took place in Montauk due to all its conspiracy theory stuff but then they changed it to an imaginary city for more creative freedom or something like that. I actually just learned of this a couple days ago, weird coincidence. S5 Vol 1 rules!

IGN guy who gave it an 8, said the dungeons are 10/10, while open world/chatter is 5/10. He ended scoring it 8. Knowing this I mean I'm not skipping S-tier Metroid dungeons. 🤷‍♂️

Sucks they wasted their time and resources on the open world and I suggest them to make an option to disable the chatter hints asap
Linear level design is S tier dungeon now ?

I agree on their art style though, they're beautiful.

Actually it's to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

The film really struck a chord with me.

"Meet me in Montauk"

The context of that line and how I related to it made it stick with me.

We've all got that person that we wanted to meet in Montauk. Maybe that we still wish we could meet there.

Anyway…

I think eventually game developers (and publishers) have to realize that there is not really such thing as a 'second screen experience' when playing most video games in modern times. It is impossible to interact with both at the same time unless the game has a one-handed control scheme or is turn-based.

I'm saying this because they are falling into the same trap that quite a few TV and Movie producers are falling into, where they feel the need to over-explain because they think the individual isn't fully paying attention.

Can't wait to drive around breaking rocks

I've circled the desert once and must have found most of the rocks on that tour. Took about half an hour.
Sure it's not the most exciting thing to do, but there are other things to unlock in that area.

I've somehow never seen that show and totally missed the boat.

Amazing fucking movie and that makes sense. I used to take that train daily.

To be honest I don't think they wasted much time with that.

Some people have said there is a Hints option you can toggle on and off in the Settings so that might be our best bet of cutting down on unnecessary exposition.

You can catch the boat whenever, not just when it's first out. It's 80s style bliss, like high production value goonies, just binge seasons 1-4 and you may even catch the 5 finale near its release, Vol 2 is on xmas or something and the finale on new year's. And no waiting for the next for you, it's the end!

If i had to the game based on the 8 hours i am on, i would say 85%.

The open world desert is neither good nor really bad, it's mostly just "there".
If i had to pick out two things that annoyed me it's the remote control beam: often i am in scan mode and want to go to battle directly by charging a charge beam, only to end up charging the remote control beam, which you can't really cancel.
Other than that, troopers contacting you isn't really serving any purpose, so i can understand why this would annoy people.

I more meant the cultural Zeitgeist moment. I'm such a shithead contrarian sometimes that I didn't watch it just because all my friends wouldn't stfu about lol

I'm guessing the composition of the studio has changed considerably in the almost two decades (!) since the last Prime game. If there are still oldheads at Retro, they lost the battle for the soul of this franchise. That's assuming they weren't among those pushing this unfortunate raft of 'modernizations.'

Only kids and adults with mental problems watchs Nintendo treehouse.
Literally a massive portion of mental illness fanatics that left here, following behind their "female" Ninty influencer that Pied Piper'ed (probably wearing their unwashed furry suits), and even made the forum the Gamecube colors.

How is this ok for a 2025 game ? So empty and boring, even an indie game dev would be ashamed to release it like that.

OoT on the limited cartridge had more interesting things to do than that.

drive an empty area. No music, break green rocks with a horrible animation, I might add too.

Thankfully, the rest of the game is fine. Just hope there is an update to skip all this. Almost feels like they wanted to add extra hours so people don't call it a short game.

I wonder how the scanning is, I'd hope it's majorly streamlined, it was quite annoying to miss 100% because of some random object you no longer have access to. I get it if you miss scanning an enemy type or boss or whatever before it's gone that's on you but some random door that is like every other but has its own description, on each side on top of that, was a bit extreme. Make every door count the same, every similar object count the same and so on so you don't get in the mindset of just scanning everything again and again and again breaking your own gameplay flow to get 100%. Scanning is cool for cool lore shit or actual hints from scanning things that actually look interesting to the player, not because everything is scannable so you read hey it's another door like every other door but this connects this to that from this side and that to this from the other side, come on.

As someone who is 8 hours in ( i'm jealous) how many times do the troopers contact you? And is Myles constantly annoying you like some reviews suggest.

Exactly the same as prime 1 ( didnt play 2 and 3 so idk ), the difference is the controller, now you open you visor with Y and scan with ZL

That wasn't a controls question but about the scannable objects and how they count to the database and are distributed in the world etc. but if that's also exactly the same ah well, maybe the next one in the new trilogy will streamline it a bit then... Oh you haven't even played 2 or 3, lol, figures :messenger_loudly_crying:

Game scores 9s and 10s. Get's infested with troll posts because, Nintendo exclusive. Never change GAF.

There it is, finally...

It's because of the "trolls" that the game also received 6's and 7's, right ?

Said it before, I'll say it again : You Nintendo fanboys are literally insufferable and the worst fandom in existence compared to MS's, Sony's AND PC combined.
Its always the "trolls" that are - somehow - always at fault, yes sir, 'cause this multi-billion company can apparently do no wrong according to people like you.

His initial introduction and the time you spend with him is very brief. Yes he is cringy, but you yourself decide if you take it with humor or not. After that he becomes much less of an issue as he stays in once place and his language becomes more focused; he then only contacts you rarely if you are close to the area you need to go next, in order to point you in the right direction. I had to return to him once to unlock a new power, and that interaction wasn't anything noteworthy.

I am now in another area where i met a trooper that is pretty cool, focused and the interaction took only a minute or two, he gave me two calls after that which ended after seconds.

Do a barrel roll, Samus!
I like how technology requiring the fucking moph ball specifically is littered everywhere but this elite soldier is mindblown by Samus "doing the morph ball". At least make the corny-ass Gen Z meta drivel make sense if you have to insist on it lol

Edit: can't type on this homoerotic phone
