MGS: Ground Zeroes trailer in "ENGLISH" UP!

I was more than willing to give Kiefer a chance, I like him as an actor. But his performance as demonstrated here is so phoned in that it's difficult to take it seriously. Is this really what he'll be like throughout the game? Completely emotionless, and literally sounding as if he's reading the lines from the script for the first time? Oh, no...

Also, I wasn't impressed with Skull Face's voice. It seemed to be lacking something.

However, Atkin Downes is, as always, great.

Ok Kiefers voice just doesnt match, its too strange, i was willing to give it a chance but god, is it freaking awkward to listen to that voice in snakes BBs face
It's like he's is the only one of the voice crew not realizing that he's supposed to sound at least a bit campy here. Who am I kidding, he just doesn't give a rat's ass about this.

fuuuuuuuuuuuu....

i really miss Hayters voice now. Im still willing to give Keiffer a chance but man....that "kept u waiting, huh" line sucked. Balls.

Yup, this is MGSV's Tanker/Virtuous Mission. Look how the the video is labeled. "MGSV THE PHANTOM PAIN MISSION : GROUND ZEROES - OPENING"

Post dub? Isn't the whole game planned on being dubbed in English as the main form of dubbing? Sutherland is doing all of the capture work for Big Boss, complete with lips.

What I meant was that they took the recorded Japanese footage and then just added the English voices on top of the video rather than play them natively through the game's engine. They sound very weird and out of place as it is right now.

We had some really amazing voicework in video games this year (Bioshock Infinite, Last Of Us comes to mind) and this is really painful for me to hear. It's even worse because this has pretty great editing and camerawork, so the gap in quality between the visual and audio is a little bit jarring.

Agreed. The burnt guy is awful and perhaps miscast, and Kiefer is just reading off sheets of paper. The dialogue doesn't help mind, but not very impressive.

It's the Ground Zeroes mission of The Phantom Pain, the successor to Ground Zeroes and a separate product from The Phantom Pain but also part of it.

This will easily be the best looking current gen if the final product actually ends looking like that, which I highly doubt.

I was open to having another VA for Snake/Big Boss but this is terrible. It sounded like Big Boss is an amateur.

Kiefer just reading the script and getting that paycheck, zero fucks given

KEPTYOUWAITINGHUH
Which is why Hollywood actors need to be kept the fuck away from games.

Big names are almost always a waste of money and a waste of time.

They should have just gone with Richard Doyle.... or even Hayter (despite the fact that I didn't want him to voice BB).

Kiefer sleepwalking his way through this one as expected. I'll take David Hayter's cheesy performances over this any day.

That delivery on "Kept you waiting huh" is terrible

why do Kojima games have such awful voice direction

The cynical side of me believes that the only reason Keifer was cast was because of the Metal Gear movie that they announced at the 25th anniversary of Metal Gear event. I remember some video Konami put out recently about how they cast him and it was something like Gore Verbinksi recommended him or something. I'm sure that Kojima is ecstatic that he's finally got the attention of Hollywood and it would be an easier sell for the motion picture company if they can promote Keifer as starring as Snake in MGSV during press film junkets before the movie comes out.

The problem is that, like most announced videogame movies, it will probably never come out or make it through pre-production. Even if it makes it through pre-production, I suspect the studio will just either shelve it, have multiple re-writes of the script or it will come out be absolutely fucking horrible and nothing even remotely resembling Metal Gear.

But at least they got Sutherland right?

Edit: Even besides, Sutherland, the voice acting in that trailer is meh to horrible. It sounds like a bad American anime dub.

Kept You Waiting Huh

I am Kiefer, Insert Girder

The only bad thing about this game is that it looks too good

The funny thing to me is that this is almost the actual problem. The realism in the graphics and the handheld camera work (aside from that too-close move over the the soldier's shoulder) feels at odds with the early 2000's anime/video game voice cast and the visual representation of Kojima's cloying idealism. This FOX/XOF thing...

That's aside from Kiefer, though. I just hear Jack Bauer the whole time, though I could get acclimated to that idea, I guess.

At least we'll have a recurring and integral aspect from the two examples you mentioned; Troy Baker. Hopefully Ocelot will be a bit of a saving grace in terms of having "new" voice actors.

I missed it live, but seeing it now there's a lot I like about it. I watched it without sound [I'm in class] but the game looks good. The gunplay and stealth looks good. Much more solid than past games. The extent of health regen is a little worrying, but I'm sure it's balanced out by the game design. One thing that looks atrocious to me, is the amount of camera shaking when Snake runs. It's ridiculous.

I'm almost glad I watched this without sound though, going by some of the impressions of Keifer and Skullface.

Honestly if he wanted Sutherland so fucking much, why didn't he just make him Big Boss's voice after the coma? That'd give a reason for it to change a bunch (hey you didn't use your voice or smoke at all for 9 years, now you sound different), without the contradiction of Peace Walker being less than a year before Ground Zeroes.

Oh my god, Skull Face's horrible burned off lips have fucked up his voice so that he sounds like an unpaid intern
Yeah, he sounds original RE levels of bad, but it's at least a campy voice for a campy character. He mumbles because of burned lips. He at least gave some thought and effort to be the character he's supposed to be, even if he's not very good at it. Kiefer on the other hand is like Krusty the Clown from that episode where he just gets in and out of the booth.

Wow... Jack Bauer totally took over as the main character of Metal Gear Solid. He does sound like he is phoning it in. Bad, bad. Doesn't sound good. Hayter, I know, would at least put some emotion behind those lines.

And people were bitching about Hayter sucking? Woooow.

I'm actually digging Sutherland's voice work other than the fact that he sounds a lot like Miller. >_>

The problem is that the English script is still clearly written for Hayter's tact and punchy delivery in mind.

Hopefully as they get used to his work and inevitably returns to voice Snake a few more times they'll understand what to write that works for Keifer.

"Keptyouwaitingha!" That line reading was about as bad as I was fearing though.

Other than that, thought Kiefer sounded fine; Skull Face's voice was pretty bad though.

I'm in agreement with a lot of y'all in this thread. I'm just not digging Keifer in this role. "Phoning it in" definitely sprung into my mind while watching. Japanese w/subs?

I haven't played any MGS games, but I'm thinking of picking up a PS3 this fall. I was already considering getting the MGS collection... but for sake of knowledge, do I need to play everything to get the full backstory of MGS5 and whatnot?

Wow that's some truly atrocious voice acting... :(

Maybe not the voice acting, but the pairing... Kiefer's voice fits him well, but not snake, imo. The deformed-face guy's actor sounds really off too.

MGS3 and Peace Walker would probably just suffice for this game.

Play MGS3. One of the greatest video games ever created. This goes after that so you will go in with better knowledge.

YES..by the way did older games had options had options for Japanese with subs? Or did Japanese imports offer English subs?

I'll eat crow or whatever bird applies, Sutherland isn't paying off. If Hayter was in his place though the actual voice direction and everything else would still be incredibly shoddy. Sutherland isn't the biggest weak link, it's the general directing of the voice acting.

"KeptyouwatingHUH" isn't natural, at all. Sutherland isn't in a position either to question the direction he's given. Thinking back I'm surprised Hayter didn't question or try asserting himself on voice direction more in the past.

This "Hollywood people need to stay away from my games" is total bullshit. Rockstar employs plenty of lesser known actors and it usually pays off in spades. There have also been projects that included incredibly actors/actresses/artists but the project itself is complete shit, this happens in all mediums.

Kojima needs more/better English speaking dudes or something when writing/directing dialog.

Can we do a Kickstarter for better voice actors?

We need Kojima to mature and grow when it comes to dialog sounding natural and not awkward.
