MGS: Ground Zeroes trailer in "ENGLISH" UP!

The way they talked up the voice acting and motion capture I was expecting something the Last of Us quality. That wasn't very good, Skullface sounded terrible.

I'm a Metal Gear fan boy and it hurts to say this, but Kiefer sounds really terrible. This has to be a ruse. The star of the trailer is Miller with his smooth pipes, can't get enough of him.

although the delivery of the "kept you waiting, huh" line was sorta terrible, i actually liked his voice, when he was talking with Kaz. Now... Skullface was horrible. Didn't match his face at all.
Honestly, i think this specific scene was terribly directed, because Kiefer's delivery on the "Kaz, i'm here to get you out" and "Kaz, i'm already a demon", on the E3 trailer, was great, IMO.

It's the Ground Zeroes mission of The Phantom Pain, the successor to Ground Zeroes and a separate product from The Phantom Pain but also part of it.

Wha?

I didn't even have to play the next MGS to be totally confused.

So let me get this straight, for some of you the only problem is Sutherland, not the actual context and flow of dialog? Voice acting isn't just one take and that's a rap, Kojima or whomever gave Sutherland info on what they want out of him. He complied and the director/Kojima liked what he gave.

Do some of you think Sutherland did whatever he wanted and then left? Skull Face sounds like a villain from a terrible late 80's anime dub. It was a creative decision for Sutherland and others to give the performances they give. It's not like Kojima Productions is enslaved by the Sutherland family.
Skull Face just sounded different than expected, especially coming off the Japanese voice. But I can get used to it.

I don't know if I can get used to Kiefer though... Hopefully Hayter is involved, and Kojima has an explanation for the change in voice during the game.

Sutherland isn't bad but... it all just feels off.

I got a little depressed when all the cast members started coming up and THEY'RE ALL THE SAME FROM BEFORE EXCEPT FOR BIG BOSS.

Feels like a case of the "No Hayter's Club".

The fact that Big Boss's Japanese VA is the same probably means that for whatever reason they wanted to get rid of Hayter.

I reckon they probably voice acted over the trailer rather than actually pulling from lines in the games, which is why it sounds kind of awkward

That would be like putting a band aid on Skull Face.

This. Keifer's performance aside, why do you pay all this money to score a Hollywood actor as your lead and yet, judging by Skull Face's VA, the rest of the VA is going to sound horrible. Keifer's VA, at best, sounds phoned in, but Skull Face's VA sounds like an actor from some straight-to-DVD Cinemax softcore porn movie from 1997 or, worse, the voice cast from Resident Evil 1 on the PS1.

I just don't get it. Every game that comes out from Japan in the U.S. still sounds like this. It's not 1997 anymore. Why does Troy Baker sound great in Bioshock Infinite, but sounds like he's acting in a Saturday morning cartoon in this?

Nothing takes me out of a game more than atrocious voice acting. The Metal Gear series isn't the worst offender by far, but if you want me to take your super serious story seriously hire a decent voice director.

I can only assume they just have them read their lines once and run with it or something. I can't take your game seriously in 2013 if your voice actors sound awful.

Hayter should have never been Big Boss in the first place imo, Kojima just fixing past errors. He's Solid Snake and that's it for me.

Can someone show Kojima The Last of Us so he can hear what professional video game voice acting sounds like?

This is just embarrassing.

I can understand that maybe they didn't want Skullface to have the "typical" evil villain voice but...MGS is a series known for its interesting, well written, and well acted antagonists. Skullface's voice LITERALLY could have been coming out of one of the generic soldiers and you never be able to tell.

Who said Skull Face was Big Boss' only antagonist? He may not be THE antagonist.

True... It's a downgrade for sure. We're all used to Hayter as Snake, and Kojima should've kept him as the lead for the sake of continuity if nothing else.

All of you that hated on Hayter should feel bad.

The graphics keep improving, but the voice acting/directing/writing is still in that awkward PS1 1998 "hey we're attempting to tell a complex story" kind of phase, where even voice actors who give great performances in other games have to sound like cartoon characters, "Let the legend come back to life!"

It's pretty obvious that Kojima wanted to ditch Hayter and Hayter alone given that we now know all the previous voice actors are reprising their roles. I know a lot of people on here don't like Hayter's performances and think he's arrogant and whiny or whatever but after watching this trailer I'm really going to miss him. :(

I didnt like the voice acting in this trailer. Weird because I actually thought the E3 trailer had decent voicework for what little there was.
Maybe its a good thing that Kojima is going to use less text this time and try to convey things through animation.

Literally, the first thing I did was fast forward to "kept you waiting, huh" because thats such an iconic Metal Gear line. I didnt like it. This upsets me greatly :(

Maybe theyll allow us to use the JP track.

Kojima must find this type of English voice acting charming or endearing. I just don't get it.

I'm trying to stay positive here because MGS is my favorite franchise of all time but man, the voice acting feels so forced. Maybe it gets better with time but keifer sounds stale and monotone. Kojima had a vision of going hollywood to draw mass appeal but this is terrible. It sounds lifeless.

I'm not hating on it because of the voice change, im upset because of the lack of soul. Just thinking of hayter delivering the lines gives it 10x the heart. This is disheartning, but, im still on board.

Good post.

Troy Baker similarly sounds awful in FFXIII, it's not a coincidence.

I'm glad this thread exists, as it shows I'm not crazy for thinking that voice acting by skull face was pretty damn atrocious. No idea who is to blame for this, but it does not fit the tone of this at all.

Not liking Sutherlands voice so far but I'll remain open to the idea that I might grow to like his voice if the story for MGS 5 can come anywhere close to MGS3's...

We'll see... :/

I continue to believe that Kojima is on a long con here. I believe that the protagonists in Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are somehow different from each other, either due to being 1) different people entirely, 2) GZ is a VR simulation that didn't manage to simulate Snake/BB's voice correctly, 3) something happened to change the voice between segments.

I think Kojima is too nice to treat Hayter like this, especially in such a public fashion. We already know that Kojima goes to great lengths to fool people. I think there is something in the narrative that is the reason Kiefer is being used in GZ. I continue to believe that Hayter is playing a role, pretending to be publicly dumped and shunned by Kojima, but he will actually show up in Phantom Pain to reprise his role.

Why is everyone talking about the voice when the gameplay looks like Splinter Cell Conviction: GTA?

The gameplay is almost a week old which is ancient in internet time

The Japanese version has Snake's classic voice. If some con was going on here than that would have been switched aswell

By signing up an expensive, super well known actor with a very distinguishing tone that will, most likely, confuse the shit out people? am I listening to Snake or Jack Bauer?

It doesn't make sense in any way. If they wanted to get rid of hayter they should have picked some other actor, preferably someone with an even lower tone, like Doyle. Sutherland is a terrible option: he's too well known, he has a higher pitched tone (which is weird since big boss is older and as you get older your voice doesn't get higher pitched), he will probably be asking more money, a lot more than hayter, he will probably be harder to get a hold to record, will probably ask for more if a sequel comes, and to top it off, the guy is phoning in his lines.

You could say Hayter is corny and hammy but that's all snake has ever been and the fans were happy. Why change it? Why pay more for someone who probably never even heard of the franchise or cares for it? I'd rather have Hayter trying his best to sound like he did in MGS1 than Sutherland reading a script, half a sleep, just for the paycheck.

If it was Doyle, I wouldn't mind as much. At least made more sense, canonically. So I don't think Kojima is correcting any errors, he's just adding more into the mix. Sutherland is a good actor, but this goes to show that Hayter wasn't so bad either. It's not just the quality of the VA that matters, the script and flow matter a lot too. And kojima writes some funky shit sometimes, not even Keifer can make it sound right.

/second, and final rant (sorry)

I'm hoping this is true soooo bad. The voice acting is atrocious. Totally takes away from the heart and soul of snake

Don't do this to yourself..

I want to believe too.

Just think about how much money Kojima paid Kiefer to do this...couldn't wait to get his hands on a "Hollywood celebrity."

Oh shit. Sutherland sucks :S

That was terrible, I'm sorry. People said this guy is meant to be better than Hayter? I'm not seeing it right now.

is it true that kojima pratically fired the script translator from MGS1 for trying to make the lines sound better in english that just a straight up translation?

this is what i heard from the Yovideogames MGS1 lets play from Maximillian and Matt, dont know if actually true
