MGS: Ground Zeroes trailer in "ENGLISH" UP!

You guys are just not used to Kiefer's voice yet. Give it time. You're watching the trailer and comparing David's voice to Kiefer's voice. You should stop doing that and move on.

MGS3 and Peace Walker would probably just suffice for this game.

Play MGS3. One of the greatest video games ever created. This goes after that so you will go in with better knowledge.

Thanks guys.

YES..by the way did older games had options had options for Japanese with subs? Or did Japanese imports offer English subs?

I'd like to know this as well. I'm the "subs over dubs" kind of guy with anime, and this definitely is the same way.

I'm not even talking about Kiefer, Skull Face has some of the worst voice acting I've ever heard in a big budget video game.

It's that bad.

I'm not comparing it to David at all. Kiefer really sounds bored and stiff.

I haven't played any MGS games, but I'm thinking of picking up a PS3 this fall. I was already considering getting the MGS collection... but for sake of knowledge, do I need to play everything to get the full backstory of MGS5 and whatnot

Just get the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection. It includes MGS, MGS2HD, MGS3HD, MGS4, MGS Peace Walker HD, as well as the original Metal Gear + Metal Gear 2 if you want to go old-school. Make sure you play the games in order because there's a lot of references you may otherwise miss.

On-topic: Hype levels are dropping considerably and I was so hyped for this after the E3 trailer too.

I was solidly in the "Hey! Give the new guy a chance!" "He sounds pretty decent in the E3 trailer!" camps and was excited to hear what Big Boss' new voice was gonna sound like.

But man, after that, I don't know... I think I'd rather have Hayter in, hamming and graveling it up than have someone who sounds like he's doing a cold read off a script he's not interested in. I'm sad to say this, but it really did kind of sound like a "phone-in" to me...

I think he sounded alright in the E3 videos. Sounds off point here.

Its not that, I was extremely excited for Sutherland playing Big Boss. It just isn't him, it's the entire voice acting/direction in general. There isn't a good flow or pacing with dialog, it feels spun out at whim.

Wow, I was ready to welcome Kiefer because I was getting tired of how Hayter's Snake voice had become a parody of himself and I thought he delivered that "Kaz, immolreddy a demun" line pretty damn well but this whole thing is just some freaky friday shit. I don't think I like it at all. Skull face sounded weird as hell too. Kiefer needed a bit more gruff, the voice was too mellow.

Kaz was the only thing keeping it together if you ask me.

Wow that's some truly atrocious voice acting... :(

They should just hire Quinton Flynn and have him do his horrible Jack the Ripper/Bela Leguosi impersonation from Metal Gear Rising the whole game. Also, is anyone else having a really hard time distinguishing Miller's voice form Sutherland's? Christ that VA is terrible. It's 2013 and Konami still can't afford to hire a decent voice director.

Skull Face I didn't like at all, sounded too normal for that character.
Kiefer as Snake I have no comment; I think I can live with it, especially assuming that Hayter comes back later as Solid Snake to take out BB in future games.

Idk, Troy Baker sounds awesome as Ocelot and we've heard less of him.

Are we really going to say the voice acting sucks based on one line? a cheesy as all hell one at that?
Sutherland has ten or so lines in this trailer. All equally terribad.

This is next-gen right? That looks way too good for current gen
Gameplay didn't look so great I thought, especially the daytime. I think they are demoing this on a PC with unknown specs, that's supposed to be a close match to current consoles.

That line delivery was simply awful. I can't say that I'm hyped for this. Some people like to downplay the VA, but for me hayter is snake. It's like revisiting old friends. Now, everyone's on board except him. I could understand if it was a major cast overhaul but it ain't. And Sutherland seems to phone in his lines.

The new gameplay video left me a little confused, but i'll wait for more footage to judge the game mechanically.

Seems like kojima really had some beef with hayter, but the joke's on him, since many people will be put off by this move and won't buy the game. And even if the game is a smash hit, and he ever wants to return to Big Boss, he's gonna have to pay Kiefer even more $$$, a lot more than we would have to pay hayter. What if the guy doesn't even want to do a sequel? This VA change was the dumbest of moves in so many ways.

I still believe that David is somehow involved. The tweets and interviews have been too 'in your face'. He tries to really push the "I'm not involved :(" statement.

BELIEVE!!

Hayter continuing to the same ole gravelly voice, along with awkward grunts wouldn't change a thing. Hayter phoning in Big Boss is an issue, Sutherland and plenty of other people not getting decent voice direction is another.

Both of these problems fall on the same people.

As Solid Snake probably but Big Boss is Kiefer now. Accept it.

Can we do a Kickstarter for better voice actors?

I made this joke in a previous thread. Kickstarter to get Hayter in a studio, then find a way to take those audio files and replace the Kiefer ones on the PC version. I believe this would be technically legal too lol.

Keifer's voice sounds better than Hayter's grumbling. On that note I'm not watching or reading anything MGSV related until the game releases.

Yep sounds like they definitely fucked up with Keifer. I'm not even wild about Hayter but good fucking god is Keifer phoning it in.

I would rather had Troy Baker take a god damn shot at it.

Keifer is mumbling through half the damn trailer. It's not exactly a step up.

That would be like putting a band aid on Skull Face.

The voice acting at the beginning talking to the kid in the cage was so poor I could barely believe this is real. I don't know if it's the voice actor's fault, the voice director's fault or what, but this is just not matching the tone/detail of the visuals. Sounds so incredibly silly and immediately brought me out of it.

Even if MGS was always super silly voice acting, now that the visuals and sound are hyper-real stuff it makes it stand out like a sore thumb.

it wasnt just the kept you waiting line, even the convo between kaz and BB just sounded offputting, i guess its one of those cases of the voice just doesnt match the character

It's the Ground Zeroes mission of The Phantom Pain, the successor to Ground Zeroes and a separate product from The Phantom Pain but also part of it.

I was ready to at least give Sutherland a chance.... but that voice, it doesn't work, it's just... wrong. It's not even just that it doesn't fit, it's the fact it's just not very well performed at all. "Kept you waiting, huh?" is a bit of an inconic line and it's just.... ugh here.

The funny thing to me is that this is almost the actual problem. The realism in the graphics and the handheld camera work (aside from that too-close move over the the soldier's shoulder) feels at odds with the early 2000's anime/video game voice cast and the visual representation of Kojima's cloying idealism. This FOX/XOF thing...

That's aside from Kiefer, though. I just hear Jack Bauer the whole time, though I could get acclimated to that idea, I guess.
Good points and I agree, plus Kiefer looks like he is just reading the script, no emotion or acting whatsoever, I never opposed the change of voice work but after this, I am not liking it so far.

So let me get this straight, for some of you the only problem is Sutherland, not the actual context and flow of dialog? Voice acting isn't just one take and that's a rap, Kojima or whomever gave Sutherland info on what they want out of him. He complied and the director/Kojima liked what he gave.

Do some of you think Sutherland did whatever he wanted and then left? Skull Face sounds like a villain from a terrible late 80's anime dub. It was a creative decision for Sutherland and others to give the performances they give. It's not like Kojima Productions is enslaved by the Sutherland family.

If he genuinely did that, it's the voice directors's fault and anyone else involved that they didn't badger him to do better.

Voice acting is brutal when we've been enjoying stuff like Uncharted and Last of Us. The bar has been raised and it really shows.

I can understand that maybe they didn't want Skullface to have the "typical" evil villain voice but...MGS is a series known for its interesting, well written, and well acted antagonists. Skullface's voice LITERALLY could have been coming out of one of the generic soldiers and you never be able to tell.
