MGS3 is truly the best game this generation.

How this game managed to receive only above average scores is beyond me. I just received the key from the fat drunken soviet scientist;
He is the original creator of the metal gears?
so maybe it gets worse or something down the line? I dunno.

What I'm playing now is by far the greatest achievement any developer has released this generation. I applaud Kojima for finally injecting some real gameplay into the series while not getting all preachy with the story.

It doesn't get better then this.

I can't really disagree with you.

Beyond me, too. Since it, y'know, didn't.

Many people will lead you to believe that OH MY GOD IT GETS SO MUCH BETTER, but they only set me up for a little disappoinment. Or, at least, I wasn't nearly as impressed as I thought I'd be. The game is strong throughout, though, no question. If anything, it will not get any worse.

I have to agree. I've played most of the heavy hitters this gen (RE4, Halo 2, GTA), and MGS3 is by far my favorite.

Actually it does get better than this

You're at the "average" part of the game. :)

I would have to say it was definitely game of 2004. Not this generation though. That's a tie between ICO and Final Fantasy X (ignoring X-2 of course)...for me that is.

And the weird thing about your comment is, I can't really disagree with that either. Maybe I don't know what I like...I know for damn sure I won't come out of this generation being able to pick out one game and say "Now that's what gaming was all about in 200X."

I'll get to 3 one day. ;_;
Many people would say skip straight to 3 and usually I would agree with them but the problem is that 3 is so much better than the previous two that you would be quite dissatisfied if you played them afterwards. I know you didn't ask for opinions but I just wanted to say that I agree with you holding it off.

Metal Gear Solid 3 isn't my favorite for this gen but it's definitely among my favorites. A truly spectacular game thatÂ’s worthy of the praise it receives. Resident Evil 4 is another brilliant title and if you haven't played it you're missing out on easily the best game of 2005 (well so far).

I would say the experience of watching the opening intro, then playing while the credits roll on the original Metal Gear Solid when it came out surpasses anything all the other Metal Gear games did. But you have to be back in 1998 to get that experience.

...but yeah, otherwise, 3 is better than the other two.

I really liked 2 though, and I respect it more than the other 2 for what it did, but Raiden even grated on me eventually. It's the black sheep of the series. (I just had to put my 2 cents in before the 2 bashing started, 3 is still better)

i very much agree with this, and have said so.

MGS3 is a fantastic game though, straight through. i loved it.

that being said: RE4! oh, the goodness is almost too much for me. :D

I disagree with this. I'm definitely of the "OH MY GOD IT GETS SO MUCH BETTER" opinion.

An "IMO" should definitely come first in ur thread title.
That being said.
IMO RE4 is most definitely the best game of this generation, and I would even go so far as to say the best game ever.

Em, there's actually nothing for you to disagree with. Unless you'd contend that I wasn't actually disappointed? Well, it's your word against mine. Who will win!

Listen, I love MGS for the stealth. Infiltrating bases and picking off enemies in the forest is what made the game for me.
But the best of that was, in my mind, during the 20-80% portion, if you get what I'm saying. The first fight against Volgin and everything afterwards did not have the same affect on me, though it was all intense and very well designed -- just not what I consider the bread and butter of the series.

Yeah, really. Otherwise people may get confused. As if it could've been anything else.

can someone clue me in, because i'm very close to trading this in. I'm only at the beginning, in the jungle - got my first interaction with guards, and it went into standard MGS nonsense right away.

First, you walk around slowly, constantly switching viewpoints because you can't see. Then the guard finds you anyway and you run around like an idiot for ages until the timer calms down. Rinse-repeat.

That always annoys me. Thats not stealth, its trial and error. Someone persuade me there is some cool stuff to mitigate

That's literally what happened with me and I was willing to just shelve it because;

a) I hated the no radar system because I hadn't played too much of the more difficult versions of MGS1 and 2.

b) the camera system was fucked up

and c) the waiting time for an intruder alert was insanely long

But once you get through it, I dunno.. it kinda melds together so perfectly. You'll learn to use both the camera system and first-person-view seamlessly as if it weren't so cumbersome when you first started.

As for me, I believe that this game was the best thing this generation, but we'll have to wait till Zelda and FFXII for me to be so confident.

You're only there and you're proclaiming it as the best game this generation ALREADY? Dude, wait till you get to the ending. It gets MUCH better.

Best game this gen for sure, but I only came to that conclusion after watching the ending.

It's definitely my GOTY so far.

I'll get back to RE4 once I play it later this year. I hope it's that good too.

The opening area near the ruins in the jungle is literally throwing you in at the deep end when it comes to the changes between MGS2 and MGS3 (namely lack of radar, camo and longer alert times). I spent what seemed like ages getting through this one area, but after that breezed through the rest of the game. Once it picks up it so damn compelling you won't stop til you've seen it through to its beautiful and bittersweet ending. One of my favourite games this gen.

MGS3 is the best game this generation by miles. There is nothing that comes close to touching it. I dont think I have en joyed playing a game more than MGS3.

I dont want to ruin anything for you, but the ending of MGS3 is the greatest ending you will ever see.

RE4 or Metroid Prime is my pick for best game this generation. I'll get back to the topic after I've played the new Zelda though.

I got the game yesturday for ÂŁ1 (thanks GAME) and i must say it's a relief to here you all say the ruins were tough, i got totally stuck there yesturday and havent worked out how to get through yet, i've always kinda sucked at stealth so i put it down to that.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with either RE4 or MGS3 being the best games this gen. It's hard for me to decide between the two. I believe RE4 has the better 'fun factor' overall, but MGS3 has probably the best story of any game I've played.

It has slowly become one of my favorites this gen, together with Metroid Prime, Halo and RE4. Funny, since I was really disappointed with the game at first, thanks to the absolutely horrendous camera (which I still think is flawed). Now that I know the game so well, guard locations etc, it is not an issue anymore though and I'm thankful for that. There is just so much to enjoy in this game.

Also one of the best looking games this gen. Downright beautiful.

and the award for sweeping generalizations goes to . . . :)

I'd say it's easily one of the top 10. That's about as far as I'd go. Other games, like God of War, Ico, Metroid Prime, Splinter Cell: (1-3), Ninja Gaiden, Halo 2, RE4, and the upcoming Zelda stand to totally define this generation in ways that MGS cannot. I'll leave it at that.

If you're talking about games that define a generation, then there's no way that atleast one of the GTA's shouldn't be on the list as it is THE series of this gen.

Holy shit do i hate this game. I have now "played" around 4 hours, 95% of the time has been nothing but cut-scenes. I don`t give a flying fuck about this Kojima guy`s lame stories, this is just as bad as MGS2. He should stop making bad games and start making bad movies, as that`s obviusly what he wants to do.

I would hardly even call this a game.

Probably because you've hardly even started the actual game.

If you don't like it, don't buy/play it. The game is just perfect. 90+ ratings bad? Yeah, sure, boy!

I'm amazed you even gave MGS3 a try :lol

The first couple of hours are fucked up but the game definitely gets better after that. They cut down on both cut scenes and radio conversations for the major part of the game.

So I should tolerate a game that is around 4 hours with cut scenes, codec talk, 5 minites of gameplay, and a truly lame James Bond or whatever rip-off opening sequence before the game even "begins"? I have played a little though, it seems I`m in the jungle for the second time. Last time I played anything was when I bandaged myself together after an hour or so of more cut-scenes. Gah.

Well, I guess I should have expected it after MGS2 and all the praise that got too.

Me neither. Altough keep in mind I have not played GoW yet I absolutely feel in love with everything MGS3 has to offer. My only complaint is the first hour or so was a little slow.

We`ll see. This shit better be over with now.

It shouldn't even take you that long to beat that section as it only really about an hour long. But the game doesn't actually begin till you get to
the Snake Eater mission
where the cutscenes and codecs cut down alot. The majority of the codec scenes you'll see from then on will be from you saving the game.

Too much Kojima cock worship going on as usual...;)

It's a good game, but Metroid Prime/Halo2/RE4 all trounce it for me.
