MGS3 is truly the best game this generation.

MGS3 does more things right in one game than any other title this gen. It just feels "complete". I suppose that's why it still tops my list, even after RE4.

MGS3 is the best game this generation by miles. There is nothing that comes close to touching it. I dont think I have en joyed playing a game more than MGS3.

I dont want to ruin anything for you, but the ending of MGS3 is the greatest ending you will ever see.

Go play RE4......:P MGS3 is great but its the same formula.........RE4 on the other hand transforms its genre into another level......

Well if you didn't like the story component of MGS 1 or 2 then why even bother with the series? You should know that it's story heavy.

Well, I liked MGS1 back in the day, hated MGS2, heard MGS3 was much better with much less crap in it.

Oh well, I just got to play 30 seconds running in the jungle before another cut-scene with a horse and that woman followed up with more codec talk. :lol
There it ended, I`m sure the fun will start now.

That cutscene rocked though. But yeah, around there is when you get to play more than you watch.

The interesting thing about MGS3 and RE4 is how many movie conventions are used...to me, RE4 is more fun to play, but it has an asstastic narrative sense/plot that it didn't get taken to task for the way MGS does at every opportunity. Because it's so much fun. I could definitely see someone picking either game. It's not cool at GAF but I still thing GTA: SA deserves mention because when you can see the things it does well (sandbox play, satire, etc.) you see that it does them better than any other comparable game. I love them all.

I wouldn't even mention Ico and MP in the same breath, they are good but define overrated in my mind. I also don't see any reason to believe Zelda will be ultimately comparable either if WW and the continuing decline/cookie cutter mentality go into that series. I don't care what it looks like.

This generation is not over yet.

You have to wait for Zelda, but right now Resident Evil4 & Metal Gear3 are the best games on market.

Special awards to Metroid Prime-Halo, I hate GTA!! :lol

How this game managed to receive only above average scores is beyond me. I just received the key from the fat drunken soviet scientist;
He is the original creator of the metal gears?
so maybe it gets worse or something down the line? I dunno.

What I'm playing now is by far the greatest achievement any developer has released this generation. I applaud Kojima for finally injecting some real gameplay into the series while not getting all preachy with the story.

It doesn't get better then this.

The game gets a lot better from there on, so you're in for a blast. Out of curiousity, have you played Resident Evil 4 yet?

All this talking about MGS3 has made me want to put my PSP on sleep mode for a few hours play it again, especially since I never found the aligator head or got The End's camo.

Resident Evil 4 is an awesome game but after I beat it, I felt like not playing it again. The Mercenaries is great fun though, I loved that mode in RE3 and I can't get enough of it in RE4.

MSG3 is great but RE4 is better.

And I wouldn't call a game the best of this generation because we still have a lot of great games coming out this year that could top Resident Evil 4.

If MGS3's story is as convoluted and stupid as MGS2 - then it most certainly is NOT the best game this gen.

Also, if it has as much "non-gameplay" as MGS2 (i.e. stupid fucking movies that go on for fucking ever) then it REALLY isn't the best game this gen.

Sorry PS2 fans, but the PS2 is an outdated, outclassed, piece of shit IMO.

Its graphics are jaggy 99% of the time. The textures muddy usually. Load times fucking suck.

I got rid of my PS2 for a reason, there was nothing I wanted that I couldn't wait for a better version of or I could just live without certain titles.

wow :lol

It's probably my favorite game of the generation. Actually, I ended up playing it back to back with RE4.... that was a fun couple of weeks. It's cool that two sequels from franchises that people were starting to get a little wary of ended up being so great and (almost) universally liked.

For MGS3, what I really liked was how different some of the gameplay felt. Stuff like that sniper duel, or the whole experience with the Sorrow.... stuff that I definitely haven't played before. The core gameplay was cool, but the big set-pieces (like the bosses and the entire climax) were what boosted it to 'game of the generation!' level, for me anyway. That and Ocelot's hand gestures. :lol

Before RE4 = I agree.

After RE4 = I disagree.

And to think that I absolutely hated all the prior RE's. Way to go Capcom!!

Two words. Chaos Theory.

I like Splinter Cell, but I'm in two minds whether the sumptuous graphics really make up for MGS's astonishingly varied and often ingenious environmental interactivity. Its a toybox for the inquisitive gamer and often yields hilarious results. A pretty graphics engine is one thing, but a game with this much love lavished on it is quite another.

Yep. But you can have lots of (hours of) fun in those sections you clearly rushed through the first time if you want. And BTW, I'm sick of this MGS3 cut-scene bashing. I've played lots of AAA games with as much if not more cut-scenes that don't get the same hate MGS3/MGS2 ones do/did (and yes, one of those is the acclaimed Shen Mue too). At least MGS cut-scenes are a joy to watch.

I loved the areas before that part, you sound like your rushing, take your time, admire the attention to detail, go hunting, that's what I did.

It's my favorite "single player campaign" of this gen. I don't think the game would win over people who are put off by games that require patience and very deliberate planning (they'd probably give up at "The End"), but it was exactly what I was hoping for after I finished playing MGS on PlayStation back in 1998 and thought of what a "next gen" Metal Gear could be like.

If MGS3's story is as convoluted and stupid as MGS2

Thankfully it isn't. Even GameSpot gave it recognition for best story of the year, and they gave it the lowest score of all the major review sites/publications.

It doesn't get better then this.

It will, once you get to fight THE END, which is very soon......

Yes, this is truly a landmark game and is my favorite Metal Gear ever...

Best game this gen?

Between Snake Eater and Metroid Prime I would have to say yes...

It ain't my favorite game this gen, but it *is* a damn good title once you get past that first spate of cutscenes and codec chatter. The Cobra Team is my favorite cadre of retardedly cool bosses ever.

MGS3 can't be worth the purchase of a PS2 for it. Fudge that.

It's also not worth the risk of wasting another 50 bucks either.

Sorry, already got bilked out of 50 bucks for that travesty MGS2.

Your contribution thus far have been based entirely off your expeience with MGS2. Ergo, you've never played MGS3, you don't have a PS2 anyway and even if you did you wouldn't risk 50 bucks on buying it. Just out of interest - why the fuck are you in this thread? Its not like you can refute MGS3 being the best game this gen if you've never been near it, right?

MGS3 / Metroid Prime / Halo / RE4

best games of this generation.. different tastes will make people choose one or the other but it must be between these four

I gave up on the game, it`s just annoying to play. The fact that I can`t move in first person just annoys the hell out of me. The normal camera angle is just so limiting and frustrating. The gameplay itself feels outdated, unintuitive and it`s just no fun.

I could care less about stories in games, and the story is what I suspect is the reason why many people seem to like this game.

Shenmue 2 is one of my favourite games though, so I can appreciate games with a story. :D

It's A reason why people like it more. The fact that the game takes an open ended approach stealth is another reason.

MGS3 is, to me, the best game in the series.

However, I did find the story in MGS2 more captivating.

The problem with mgs 2 and early portions of mgs3 is that the story takes priority over gameplay. Thats not what games should be about.

The excessive and horrible dialog should disqualify it from even being considered the best game this generation (that and the terrible camera angles).

OK

PEOPLE...

Do not judge the entire game by the first two hours!!!

There are 2 main parts to the game

There is:

A)Metal Gear Solid 3:Virtuous Mission (The prologue to MGS3)

And then there is:

B)Metal Gear Solid 3:Snake Eater (the actual game)

Until you have actually gotten to the Snake Eater mission YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED METAL GEAR SOLID THREE...as it is quite different from Virtuous Mission in pacing and general feel (and yes that includes the frequency of codec conversations and non-gameplay cinemas)

Again, Virtuous Mission IS THE PROLOGUE...its is not actually MGS3, in my opinion....

Keep in mind, it also takes a while to understand how usable CQC is....once I "got" CQC gameplay, MGS3 took on a totally different feel for me......really awesome flow....

I swear, you troll in every MGS3 thread

Saying no to the original poster is trolling in your book? :lol

Best non-Xbox game this generation though, right?

Not even close. I'd rather play games like GT3, GT4, GTA:SA, Virtua Fighter 4, Sly 1, Sly 2, God of War, Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 3, Super Smash Bros Melee, Metroid Prime, Wind Waker, etc. Many of which I *shock* own and enjoy.

Oh the fans of this game are the most sensative gamers on this board.

RE4 for me as well...but then again I am probably the only person on this Earth who wasn't crazy about MGS, MGS2, and MGS3.

I gave each game in the series a fair shake. I stopped playing MGS1 after the torture scene (I just got bored with it). I stopped playing MGS2 after you switched to Raiden (I think that's where most people stopped). I stopped playing MGS3 after reaching the lab (I got bored again). Ironically I think MGA for PSP is the best Metal Gear game since the originals.

After infiltrating
Groznyj Grad & Volgin's torture scene
, I was convinced that this was the best game I've played this generation.

I loved MGS and MGS2, and found myself playing those games all night, and finding myself late for classes the next day.

MGS3...I can't get into. The story thus far is awesome, the characters are equally awesome. The bosses...incredible.

But I HATE the control and gameplay. I'm playing because of the storyline...but I get frustrated with the poor game design choices made for this game, and can't play for extended periods of time.

Especially when you compare the controls to games like Splinter Cell, the gameplay needs to be upgraded to today's level. The concept of stealth without radar is great, but the camera views and control doesn't lend itself well to that situation. The graphics are incredibly detailed that it could easily control much like SC without it hurting the visuals.

I can't agree that this is the best game this generation...for that reason. Every game has their own weaknesses...but the design flaws were so apparent that it is such a big detractor.

Bought a GC for it.
I wasn't a fan of RE4's "enter a room and shoot shit" gameplay. RE4 just didn't have enough variety to maintain itself. I was desperately looking for it to end halfway through the castle.

MGS3 is the exact opposite of this.

RE4 impressed me more with its stunning environments more so than the actual gameplay.

Many people will lead you to believe that OH MY GOD IT GETS SO MUCH BETTER, but they only set me up for a little disappoinment. Or, at least, I wasn't nearly as impressed as I thought I'd be. The game is strong throughout, though, no question. If anything, it will not get any worse.

no, seriously. The climax of MGS3 is so spectacular it's unbelievable. The visuals, the intense chase... I won't spoil it for Insertia... but it DOES get OH MY GOD SO MUCH BETTER.
