Micro has landed...

Tried playing Fire Emblem on the Micro on the bus ride back last night.

Not cool at all.
What's the issue? I'm playing it right now and I don't see any immediate problems. Field is clear, text is totally readable.

We need more Micro food.

Hey, Wario Ware Twisted is really good on this. The cart sticks out a mile but the way it fits together, you can rest your fingers on the rumble pack. Sorted!

Or lord, I could see a web site being started showing nothing but pictures of a Micro in someone's mouth, much like that site that had all of those N Gage pictures of people holding different things to the side of their head.

shit thats tiny. thats genius marketing for the kiddy sector. (the huge kiddy sector)

I really want to see exactly how sharp and bright it is. Apparently IGN says its brighter than the DS screen.

I noticed it was bright but i don't remember if it was brighter than the DS. One thing is for sure, it is a lot sharper. The pixels are so much smaller so it makes sense.

KOTAKU REVIEW:
http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/micro/micro-micro-review-122516.php

Interesting quotes:

"Finally, I checked out Fire Emblem. This game gave me a good chance to check out how lots of tiny text, visuals and maps handle on the Micro’s minuscule screen. I didn’t have any problems at all playing the game, and I’m not really concerned about tiring out my eyes with lots of play. The screen is so bright and images so sharp that it didn’t seem to be an issue."

"Holding the Micro in my hand and playing games with it, you really get a sense that you could take it anywhere and play discretely on a device that won’t garner a lot of attention unless you want it to."

Yeah, I totally suck at taking those close up shots of screens. They always seem to get blurry. Maybe it's my camera.

I havent' had any problems with the size of the screen, but I'm planning on playing a lot more Fire Emblem over the next week to test that theory out. I spent a lot of today out and about, with the Micro hanging around my neck, and it was quite comfortable.

I was playing Dynasty Warriors Advanced and it didn't bother me at all.

I'm planning on posting a more in-depth field test of the Micro over on Kotaku Monday morning.

Thanks for the reply mate.
Maybe it is obvious but have you checked if your camera has a "MICRO" button? Usually it is used in order to take very close pictures. I have an old and a new cameras and both of them have this button! :)

We need more pictures! :O
Lol!

Thanks again.

I have no problem with the SP's size. In fact, I think it's perfect. I'll pass on this thing. It's just not worth losing my eyesight over.

Flash Carts? Yes or no?

If the screen is 2" wide, by my calculations it should be 1.33" tall. Can anybody verify the actual active display size?

For comparison, GBA games on the DS play in a 2.25x1.5" window. If the Micro plays 2x1.33", that is 78% of the display area of GBA games on the DS.

I dunno, maybe it's my old man's eyes... but not only is there text, but there are a lot of character icons on the map in FE that end up all blurring into the same damn blue and white animated mess if I don't hold my focus.

I dunno, plus, the bus was shaking and bumping and shit. Made it a pain to play on such a small screen. <shrug> Some people get sick playing first-person shooters. My eyes get tired playing FE on Micro.

And for whoever said to buy a car -- try living in a real city sometime.

Sexy looking thing indeed.

My most important question is how the d-pad feels. I hope Nintendo gets demo units to stores soon. My launch purchase of this will depend on whether or not the thing feels comfortable.

Amen. I did the public transportation for years when I was in school in Atlanta. Game Boy was a godsend back then. Games of Tetris DX that lasted for days and days due to the save midgame feature.

The US seems to have lucked out on the choice of Micro.

The EU has Green, Blue, Silver and Pink (All solid colours, the casing the same as the faceplate). Japan has Purple, Silver, Blue, Black and Famicom (again, all matching casing and faceplate). But the US has Silver casing with 3 faceplates (Ammonite, Ladybug and Black) then the other option is the Black casing with 3 faceplates (Camouflage, Flame and Silver). All of which I think look pretty damn ugly in combination.

Here's the EU options:

Here's the Japan options:

And here's the US options:

Anyone else agree? I think if I'm gonna pick one up it'll be either the Black or Famicom models from Japan.

I've got a question, is it possible to stick the Micro on a keychain in any way?

Bcause I might totally consider getting one if this is so...

Seems like the micro requires its own charger so I can't use existing GBA/DS chargers. Does anyone know if the charger that comes with the Japanese/US Micro can handle European voltages?

On the other hand, instead of a Link Port, there is just an EXT port up top for plugging in the power adapter -- it's a different plug from that of the SP as well, so you'll need both plugged into your power strip for charging.

I guess this means it doesn't use the same charger as the DS.

Yes, I'm very curious about this as well. Kobun, what's the voltage tolerance on the charger?

Well, I ordered a stepdown (220/240v -> 110v, UK spec plug) at the same time I ordered the Famicom Micro from Play-Asia. It was like £6 or something, then just use the charger in the Micro box. When the Micro hits UK shores pick up a UK Micro charger.

Forget keychain, what about a belt buckle?
Dude totally!! How sweet would that be? I've been meaning to buy one of those old school NES controller belt buckles at Gamestop, but an actual playable handheld? I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

The Micro uses a unique charger, completely different from the GBA SP and DS. Mine says OXY-002 (JPN/USA) on it.

In one box on the back of the charger it says:
Input: AC100V 50/60Hz 7VA
Output: DC5.2V 320 mA

Then outside the box and beneath it it says:
Input: AC120V 60 Hz 4W
Output:: DC5.2V 320 mA

CLass 2 Power Supply

Hope that helps. Oh, and it's a two prong affair that folds down like with the DS and GBASP chargers.

Thanks, so I need a stepdown converter for now, or wait till the EUR version comes out so I can buy the charger separately. Or eh... resist being a slave to marketing and buy something else.

I think the D-Pad feels great.

On a side note, I just posted my follow-up field test of the Micro. I talk about how it performs in the sunlight and how no one seemed to notice it dangling around my neck while I was walking around for a day.

Hi Crescente!
Nice review!!
I've seen you posted new MACRO pictures!!
So even you camera has this feature! :D
Nice!

What about a pair of pictures in MACRO vision of Advance Wars 1/2 in order me to fall in love with this new tiny system? ;)
Thanks!

Anyone remember those adds of people wearing PSP's around their neck like a chain? Anybody actually do that with their PSP's?

Will link-cable mulitplayer work on Micro? What about GBA-to-GC cable? It'd be a real shame if the Micro didn't support those, it's already a streamlined GBA since it doesn't play GBC and GB games, at least give it link cable support pretty please.

Both those will work, but you need a converter since the Micro uses a proprietary smaller EXT port.
