The Schmup of the year has landed!- Earthion!

Incredible game. Thanks @ultrazilla for gifting me a copy on Steam! Instantly takes me back to the Genesis and SNES era. Games like Gaiares (ガイアレス, Gaiaresu), UN Squadron, R-Type, Thunderforce, Darius. Man those were good times. The game bleeds detail with outstanding animation. It has responsive controls and great music as well. Music is classic arcade-y style. Great to see (and hear) Koshiro-san at it again making games. I only wish some of the bosses were a bit more..complex. More detail; smoother animations, more moving appendages, multi-layered. Some of the voice audio is pretty rough (the warning! sound) but I get the hommage to the retro era soundboards. The parallax scrolling is amazing. Bring on a sequel let's fking go it's 2025 gotta stay alive!

Had it targeted being a Sega CD like release, it may have been possible to add more complexity, (some mode 7 like effects..) on top of the fact that the game could also have had red-book audio, and not be constrained by the Genesis sound-chip...hopefully they may make a sequel, or a spin off which would add what you've described...

Schump good or bad?

Looks like R-type, I do like the shield mechanic.
It's incredible. I've only gotten to stage 5 so far before I had to leave for a business trip, but everything has been completely top tier so far. The level design, the game mechanics, the soundtrack, the visuals…

Unbelievable to witness on a Genesis and CRT. I'm pretty bummed that I won't get to play it until I get home in two weeks. (I technically have it on my Analogue Pocket, but I feel like this game deserves a CRT playthrough first.)

This game is already up there amongst the greatest shooters of all time...even the Super NES wouldn't have rejected it at the time..!

A reminder that Superdeluxe (Japanese sister company of LRG) are putting out a deluxe physical edition for Switch and PS5:

It's out Oct 30 for ¥7,980 ($54) on Amazon JP.

Shmup of the year is an understatement.

Likely my favorite that isn't a cave game. It's phenomenal!

It's pretty good, I have to say. Lots of fun. And I am so fucking glad that Koshiro did not let himself go into the fucking Danmaku direction.

+Devil Blade Reboot.

All of these are way better than Earthion. I really cooled down on it unfortunately.
What are your concerns with Earthion? I personally love it.

The biggest gripe with the game currently for me is that I don't precisely know where the hitboxes are. This causes some frustrating moments in the higher difficulties.

Currently playing hard mode without using password. Trying for a 1CC, the problem is with the upgrade system where as soon as you lose an extend you becomes so weak there's no getting back up, the run is ruined.
Andro Dunos 2 for example does not have a shield, but at least when you die you can still continue your run.

There's also a bullet visibility issue in some of the stages, but it isn't that bad.

By an extend do you mean taking so many hits you lose your sub weapon?

Yeah lose a life. If you lose your sub and get to low level primary after stage 3 good luck.
I think you can get the levels back up fairly quickly even with a fresh sub weapon pick up. It has a bit of Gradius syndrome but it's not as bad as Gradius.

I usually use the upgrade pods in the shop to the get my main weapon and shields to either maximum or one from maximum, take a third weapon slot and put the rest to leveling up my sub weapons. Mostly even if I die I don't lose my sub weapons.

That's the upgrade path I used in normal too, but now in hard mode I can't get pass stage 4 if I died, you don't have enough firepower to mow through enemies, plus the design of the game assumes you can't dodge everything, that's why the shield is so generous. Anyways I'll try to get farther, but it's less interesting than the other shmups mentioned above in my opinion. Blue Revolver is one of my top games in the last 5 years easily, I still have to try a 1CC parallel mode.

I haven't made it very far in the hard mode yet as 1cc'ing normal burned me out a bit.

I love how the different difficulty modes stack the enemies and elements in the levels on top of each other. So far there has been value in each difficulty level as they compliment and make the levels easier to understand when going forward.

I've only dabbled Blue Revolver and haven't even finished a full run on it yet. Seems like a very well made game though. I will get into it later.

ZeroRanger I did 1cc the first loop and it's great. I have to go back and 1cc the second loop and in the end go for the full run!

Zero Ranger is 7 years old.

Blue is 8 years old.

Gunvein 3 years old (but not this good IMO)

Devil blade reboot is one year old (still prefer this)
Yeah they are not so recent but I'd take into consideration that ZeroRanger got the second campaign update 5 years ago and has a third campaign still coming later.

Blue Revolver received the Double Action full game overhaul for free just late last year.

Really doesn't matter. This is easily the best shmup in a long time. Maybe an argument for Devil blade reboot can be made but this is just so satisfying to run through.

Tried to buy not out on console.
Comes out digitally on Sept 30th, and physically a month later. For now, you can play the rom that's been circulating. (But only do that if you're 100% gonna buy it when it comes out.)

I'm finally home from a long work trip, so I'm back at my CRT tonight and I'm gonna grind through more of this game. I bought a new arcade stick just for this game, and I'm super excited to grind through it.

What stick you get?

I'm likely going to get a lever less for Christmas for fighting games on ps5 since I feel like arcade sticks went out the window once mad catz stopped making TEs.

It's a really thin and portable leverless. I'm a fan of these style controllers for fighting games, and recently started trying it with shmups. I don't know if I like it more than a real stick, but it's definitely way more comfortable. It's called the Haute42 T16 or something. Was pretty cheap, only $70.

Wow, that's so old school it's like it was designed to play Space Invader, Asteroids, or Defender like on the old cabinets. (Ok, defender did have one lever but a ton of buttons. The other ones from the late 70s and earlier 80s were nothing but buttons)

I've looked into this brand before.

I forget if it's going to work for a ps5 out of the box or not.

From what I've been told, you can use it with a PS5, but you need to attach a PS5 controller via usb to the side input on the stick. I don't know exactly how it works, but apparently it does.

For PS5 you need an adapter. Otherwise the controller will disconnect itself every 4 - 8 minutes. It's a Playstation licensing issue.

Edit: I use the Brook Wingman converter myself.

Edit 2: For Switch and PC no adapter is required. I haven't tried Haute on a Switch 2 yet so I don't know about that.
