The Schmup of the year has landed!- Earthion!

Much appreciated everyone who has made recommendations. Can I also ask if there are any Switch Shmup sites/ YT channels you recommend that keep up to date with new Shmup releases? Thx.

That's a hard one because it's so damn niche. I'd love to know too if there are sites around releases/ports.

As far as YouTube, there are 3 or 4 main Shmup channels, but they don't really focus on supplying a comprehensive list of releases or anything.

The Electric Underground is one of the more prominent ones, though he also talks about action games in general.

Through Electric Underground one can find loads of other shmup channels though. He has good recommendations on his page.

Thanks again all.
A brilliant little gem of a shmup I haven't seen anyone mention is Wavecade.
It's only £5 ish on eShop and a great little title.
For more info, and for a free online demo, head to wavecade.net

Legal way to get the rom?
I sent Ancient/Yuzo an email last night asking if they had a PayPal or something. If they get back to me I'll let you know.

This curator covers pretty much every shmup that gets released on Steam. Lots of niche stuff on there I never would've heard of otherwise.

This is why they aren't rushing to get the cartridge out, because once it's gone it's gone, so they have to make sure they capture similar issues like above between now and the (miracle?) 2026 release (apparently)

When you finish a run the game gives you a password which you can use to start a new game plus with the upgrades from your previous run.

The game encourages you to try a harder difficulty so I did just that.

Normal difficult without upgrades is hard. A lot of people finish the easy mode and use the password to start the normal run with more shields etc.

Please guys, BUY this game if you want to play it!

I see a lot of these comments are asking about the ROM, wanting to play on real hardware, etc.

Buy the game, extract the rom yourself and slap it in a flash cart. This way you are directly supporting the devs, cutting the crooks over at LRG out of the loop, and you get to play on real hardware AT LEAST a year before LRG gets around to it.

Please don't just pirate it.

Yeah it kicks your ass. It gets more forgiving though if you upgrade your main + shield with the pods.

I'm glad of the password system as it gives novice players more of a transitionary way to higher difficulties.

I think using password lowers your score, but maybe it should disable the online high score all together or it should have its own separate online high score list.

I made it to the final level with my new game plus run. This game is so much fun!

The thing I love about shmups is that each difficulty level is so much more challenging that it can make the entire campaign new.

Support Yuzo and his crew!

I have supported. And they'll get my money very easy. More than ubisoft or equal shait😂

Because this game is really fresh in today's gaming universe. No online mandatory. I can put it on a real card. And no pay to win.

Just gameplay!

Step back from that GAAS!

You get what you paid for, no half-baked gaming here, which is the norm for the past 4-5 years...and no pay us more money if you want extra ships etc...

This is becoming my fav schmup of all time.....damn it's so good. So hard too. Trying to keep it at normal....

Yes, me too. For a non Schmup Player this ist hard enough on normal mode. But gameplay feels really good and the weapon system, upgrade system and the overall presentation is so good that it feels like a modern game!

If anyone is going to play on Genesis GX for Wii (for the 240p glory), download a recent build here, otherwise the sound will not work.
Not sure why in the oficial Wii homebrew page they keep an old version.

Do you own a PC?

If so, i would recommend ZeroRanger, Void Stranger is also pretty good and from the same developer...though it's a puzzle game about pushing blocks, but about the best in that genre...oddly enough, the game about two ships that transform into robots that defeat armies by itself and the block pushing game are canon to each other and the same setting, one duo just has a wildly more action adventure.

Sadly, despite the games selling well, being reviewed pretty well, and being quite popular, ZeroRanger is typically recommended for anyone wanting a new shmup...the developer just doesn't seem interested in porting the game to consoles, if at this point ZeroRanger isn't on Switch, it likely will never come, but i still think it's worth trying.

I think they'll port Zero Ranger to consoles after they release the third campaign.

Why not 1cc it at easy first? It will help you memorize the patterns and serve as practice for a normal run.
Rather not spoil the levels though for the first time - we'll see.

btw - the downside of always using the second weapon is if your hit while using it you take massive damage to it right? I tried not using it and it still takes a good amount of damage so trying to figure out if the better move is to just always use both.

Also - it's forced me to revisit this genre as I forgot how much I love it. Bought raiden games yesterday and some others. Loving it.

I think we enjoy shmups in a different way as I don't see it as spoiling the levels. I'm glad you are enjoying the game though!

I haven't focused on how the damage works yet. I've just tried to take as small amount of hits as possible. I almost always use both weapons. Only with specific weapons I aim separately.

There are so many cool shmups. It is such a vast genre with a long history.

Personally I've only played them for a couple of years and I think I've just scratched the surface.

1CC'd normal, the game is good. Not much of a fan of upgrades in general because what tends to happen is once you die, it's hard to get back up.
Music is good as expected, visuals I find a bit hard to see bullets sometimes.

Normal is a big step over easy. Pulled out my 8bitdo M30 (Genesis) controller. Was a pain in the ass to have L and R become sub weapon change. Thank goodness for community layouts on Steam.

Incredible game. Thanks ultrazilla ultrazilla for gifting me a copy on Steam! Instantly takes me back to the Genesis and SNES era. Games like Gaiares (ガイアレス, Gaiaresu), UN Squadron, R-Type, Thunderforce, Darius. Man those were good times. The game bleeds detail with outstanding animation. It has responsive controls and great music as well. Music is classic arcade-y style. Great to see (and hear) Koshiro-san at it again making games. I only wish some of the bosses were a bit more..complex. More detail; smoother animations, more moving appendages, multi-layered. Some of the voice audio is pretty rough (the warning! sound) but I get the hommage to the retro era soundboards. The parallax scrolling is amazing. Bring on a sequel let's fking go it's 2025 gotta stay alive!

After playing a while on normal difficulty I tried an easy difficulty run and made it through the whole game without losing a life!
Btw I just realized the ending was different with this second time I finished the game!!

I just got through the normal campaign using continues.
