I've done it for 20 years, and i really tried to use paddles on the elite, but i couldnt do it. My pinkie doesn't feel strong enough for them, you cant hold under the pad without pushing paddles, oh and the whole elite pad is really heavy compared to normal pads. It feels like a brick, youre always conscious of holding a heavy thing. The whole concept is flawed.
The added weight is one of my favorite things about the controller to be honest. I wouldn't mind it being a bit heavier, but I spend a lot of time moving around and setting up steel beams at work by hand. I've never had an issue with accidentally pulling a paddle either as I hold controllers a bit higher than most people typically do. It really comes down to personal taste but after using the paddles going to a controller without them sucks. At the very least I use them in place of the RS and LS click-sticks. In FPS gams like Halo or Titanfall mapping the reload/jump/dash/etc means I don't have to remove my thumb from the stick. I can't claw at all either, the base of my finger is higher than the B button on the Xbone controller but my pinky is too low to catch the bottom paddle so I use my middle and ring fingers.
Looking at your claw image, my digits appear to be longer than yours which may help explain the differing opinions. I'm a fucking gorilla so it seems to suit me well, it's a bit on the small side if anything. I wish they make a Duke size Xbox controller but with a better layout.
