All the Microsoft/Xbox people that are laughing about this decision.... this going to bite you right back your ass. This just means that other companies like Sony, Nintendo, or whoever will just make more games exclusives that weren't exclusive before. We all know damn well that Phil won't stick to his word and will eventually make those games exclusive to Xbox.

This is awful for the industry.

Lord have mercy, there are dark time ahead of us. Gaming is gonna change significantly the next few years and I think some people will be shocked that they won't like whats coming.

I can't copy paste from the PDF - here's a screen cap 11.59pm on the 18th July.

But… these are reasons to terminate the acquisition deal. It's not automatic, its a choice for either side to take. We could find nothing happens. There could be no judgement on the PI, the 18th rolls past there's no deal extension announcement, and the acquisition is still in progress.

It's up to MS or (more likely) ATVI to choose to terminate the arrangement. If they do, we will see fireworks 🤯 but the way this has become tedious, I can see basically nothing happening until the UK finally kills it next year or something.
If the PI is granted then I think Activision walk, it means that the merger will have to wait through years of FTC shenanigans. If the PI is denied then I think Bobby can persuade the board to extend until the UK situation is resolved. I don't think MS has any plan to close without, at a bare minimum, a favourable CAT judgement and most likely not without CMA approval.
Edit: guess I missed the news

I don't think its a done deal because MS will close over CMA. I think its a done deal because CMA is going to get wrecked at the CAT hearing starting July 28th just like the FTC did.

Man. D4 on GP by next week?

Well that's saved some cash I guess - glad I didn't buy it on <cough> gamepass platforms 😅

I think one huge win in all of this is maybe, just MAYBE I will see less of that awful Jim Ryan laughing gif that gets posted here. No seriously I fucking hate it.

It is pretty funny how this has been the most popular thread on the forum for like.... almost a year, now. If M ManaByte got paid 10 dollars for every post made here, the dude would be living it up by now. Great idea for a thread, props to you

also, what happened today?

Wait... so the CMA is folding now? They mutually agreed with MS and ABK to look for a workaround? You mean, that all powerfull ancient god that is the CMA is negotiating?

Wow. Just wow.

1358 pages to go back to square 0.

If both sides start buying up everything it's going to be fucking dog shit. Anyone who is for this bullshit is just silly.
The only reason to buy a publisher would be if they are in trouble and potentially going under, Activision are not that.
Only one side has money and will buy everything including studios from the other side. Welcome to cloud game with renting :D for $100 per month.

Games aren't going anywhere and neither is gaming

Streaming was an inevitable eventuality of technological investment and its platform as it exists is beholden to current capitalist interests, which are nothing if not mercurial.

Gamers will survive.
Nintendo is the only one whose quality may survive due to thier pride but rest assured streaming will make any high quality title extremely rare in the future and you will never get to own it, you will also be paying more than what we do now.

Seems like CMA wants to settle if Microsoft offers new remedies.
The FTC PI was probably an orchestrated last ditch effort to stop the deal. That's why it was so sudden.
I guess Microsoft will give the CMA something more than what they gave to EU to let the CMA save face and it will be over.

And by the time the next switch comes out, they will be making next gen cods and it will be a gen behind the PS5 and XSX just like the switch was to PS4 and X1.

Hell, bobby himself said that the next switch is on par with the x1. how is it going to run next gen games? Especially when next gen games on PS5 and XSX are running like shit if you look at star wars and ff16. how do you port ff16 to a 1.5 tflops switch?

The matrix demo was dropping significantly below 533p on the 4 tflops xss according to DF. And it actually has a fairly decent CPU and ssd compared to whatever nintendo might be able to stick in the next switch. are we looking at 240p games? Is anyone even going to bother? especially when they didnt last gen?
Xcloud can run it, kinda

Most wont care because gaming is just a means to socially interact or watch a movie, they could give a shit less. The younger generations absolutely dont give a shit trust me, gaming means nothing to them.

Im sure there will be backend ways to play it. But given that Microsoft is quickly about to become too big to fail, there's a small percentile of a chance that any of the games would ever leave the game pass anyway.

How Sony is going to react is what I'm primarily interested in.

This court case has been completely botched by the FTC who weren't ready or prepared and the listening/watching showed that.

The judge herself commended the FTC's lawyers for doing so much with so few resources. The FTC's budget only allows for them to hire rookies which then go against veterans charging $1500/hour.

That's probably why the balance usually gets achieved by the FTC being able to delay the processes until they're untenable.

Nothing will stop Nintendo or Sony buying companies. Even if one of them tried hoarding EA, Ttwo, UBI etc… it'd be allowed.

Once two big giants combine you got to let the rest combine.

In Canada, the past 10 years had massive retailer consolidation. They allowed the biggest grocer and drug store to combine. What followed was the third biggest grocer and second biggest drug to combine. And then the biggest wholesaler bought the third biggest drug chain. And before all this happened, the second and third or fourth grocers combined. So right now the top 3-4 grocery companies and 3-4 drug chains are all owned by the same handful of companies. Crazy.
And that is bad. Because the culture -- including the bad stuff -- bleeds into acquired companies. And if it doesn't, it all becomes the same.

If Sony acquires, say, CDPR, there is a possibility that their games becomes less RPG focused and more action-adventure that Sony prefers. If Sony acquires SquareEnix, there is a possibility we don't get games like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy.

Consolidaton is not good. And a horrible precedent was set today for the industry.

Everybody will start acquiring, and it's not good for gaming or gamers.

Well, guess we can all look forward to the acquisitions of Sega, Capcom, Square-Enix, Take Two, etc. Because they are coming, don't know who will buy them, but they will be bought.
