Microsoft buying Nokia Devices and Services

Microsoft might as well turn WP into a single device / manufacturer OS like iPhone now.

Not a single device because Lumias really are awesome, but they won't lose anything if they push WP alone, is not like Samsung, HTC and Huawei had really push the OS.

It's still going to be tough for MS to catch up unless they invent something on Nokia platforms that will really be revolutionary enough to make people switch from IOS/Android.

Ballsy.

Probably ill-fated, as it relegates WP to a Nokia-only proposition and I don't think there's room for another single-maker platform, but hey. Ballsy.

All they are need are apps. Windows software is already really great and intuitive. If people actually tried it, they would like it.

again, too bad they make phones on a platform that 93% of the marketplace couldn't possibly care less about.

Yup.

TBH in recent times I've become completely jaded regarding Microsoft's entire user ecosystem. I have no interest in anything they offer from phones to tablets, Windows 8 to Xbox One.

I would say it is more than just a lack of apps. People are forced to use Windows on their PCs. Microsoft has to find some way to make it cool to use Windows on your phone/tablet.

So far they have been unable to do so. Look at Surface. It is a beautiful tablet with a massive marketing budget. That said, the vast majority of the market has shown no interest in owning one.

MS seems to think that people want MS Office on their mobile devices, but I think the number of people who agree are minimal.

Two turkeys do not make an eagle.

Wow. This actually sums it up pretty well.

Honestly, It's probably NOT a game changer but I guess it props Nokia up and helps prevent them from completely drowning so I don't see it as a bad thing.

nokia asha line was great :(

I'd probably heavily consider a nokia device if it were offered in an android variety, there goes that I suppose. I really enjoy their designs, up there with Apple and Sony as the manufacturers who consistently have top notch industrial design for their phones.

As a Lumia 920 user waiting impatiently for the AT&T GDR2 update, I hope this transaction bodes well for the future of both companies. I really love my phone, and if it weren't for Nokia I'd have switched to a Google Nexus phone instead of staying with WP. Tablet-wise I prefer Nexus 7.

I do wonder what the competition will be like for the WP ecosystem. I'm sure other companies like HTC and Samsung are being cautious right now; maybe in the future WP will just be Nokia phones.

And hopefully Microsoft can copy Apple with their all-in-one instant updates, so I won't have to wait for AT&T to "test" those things.

They should just go all in Apple style with vertical OS hardware design. The OS appeals to people who like iOS more than it did Android anyway IMO. I have always said that, but for some reason in the media and everywhere else everyone always positioned WP7/8 as an alternative to Android instead. The OS and how it does things has always been much more iOS than it is Android, by far. And none of the OEM's are even pretending to care about WP anymore, so just go all in.

Very interesting. I just bought a Nokia Lumia 520 last week for about $90. I can't wait to get my hands on this baby and try it out. Hopefully MS will continue to innovate and bring out better products.

Bought the Lumia 521 for T-Mobile just purely for Wi-Fi calling.

Works wonderfully.

Smart idea from T-Mobile to push it on the entry smartphone.

Definitely a budget phone that doesn't compromise the UI experience. The rest of the phone is garbage compared to other smart phones, but the fluid UI makes up for most of the shortcomings.

That's what happens when a Microsoft mole becomes CEO. I'm utterly unsurprised by this.

Can't wait for the Kin 2!

So, when does the EU's investigation start?

1) install CEO who blatantly drives company into the ground
2) wait for company to implode as a result of said CEO's terrible leadership
3) buy assets from de-valued company!

The only argument for MS not buying off the relevant bits of Nokia was "it's too blatant, there's no way they'd follow through, right?"

So is Elop the next Microsoft CEO?
Of course not. He'll be the CEO of the next company they want to buy at a discount.

Cool.

Nokia is within striking distance of every Android manufacturer except Samsung, with 7.4 million Lumias compared to the 2nd place Android manufacturer (LG with 12.1 million)

And the cheap Lumias bolstering Nokia's sales don't suck ever loving shit like the vast majority of inexpensive Android phones.

I just hope MS doesn't get too greedy and price themselves out of the market. Just look at the pricing for the Surface, Surface Pro and even the Xbox One compared to the competition.

I was kind of hoping nokia would realize their mistake and make an android phone at some point, oh well. Have fun with continued irrelevance.

I doubt it. The Lumia 520 has been successful Great little phone for a bit over hundred. A lot of talented people I imagine will be coming over from Nokia. Look forward to what they come up with.
