Microsoft hardware event set for October 6th

I just read an article which said that most of the batteries in the Surface Book are in the base. Which makes sense. It's why the Surface Book display is lighter and thinner than the Surface Pro 4 despite being larger.

But as a result, when being used just as a tablet, the estimate is around 3 hours instead of 12 hours. :-(

Which is why they referred to it as a clipboard and illuatrated use cases like showing something to a colleague, and didn't talk about using it in tablet mode for long periods. Disappointing but logical

Personally, I almost never take the keyboard off my Surface Pro 3 anyway. And when I do, it's just when kicking back on the couch and catching up on the news for an hour or two. So it makes sense, just something to be aware of.

Eagerly awaiting benchmarks of this and the SP4 :-D

Ok question. If all I want from a surface is Internet access, Microsoft silverlight compatibility, no slowness in operations, to be able to play nba 2k and fifa smoothly, and to be able to last 2-4 years between an upgrade needed... which surface is best? Sorry but too many products out there and I am not technically sound enough? Any help will be appreciated.

This will be the sticking point as I have no idea how demanding those games are. But for everything else the Surface (non-Pro) 3 would probably work perfectly for you.

The i5 will probably be ok - there are youtube videos out there with them playing those games on the i5 Surface pro 2. The i7 will have quite a bit better GPU though, so if you can afford it, it will last longer more comfortably. Neither will be playing the latest games on high settings though.

So if I buy Pro 3 I can buy the new pen with new pen tips

Yes. Also the new type cover with fingerprint scanner works

man, ipad pro looks like a rushed reactionary product deemed 'adequate' to launch, it doesn't really even do anything more. It's a bit unusual for Apple, even watch wasn't like this unfinished.

That was clear once you saw their keyboard cover on the iPad Pro.

That's really some disgusting shit and not Apple-like at all.

I don't Ned high setting and the mentioned games are the only ones I care for. What about the throttling issue with pro 3? Is that present in the i7 version?

We don't know yet. They should have improved the cooling, but it is still very thin, and they will still be 15W chips like the pro 3. The iris graphics on the i7 may have a risk of throttling when playing a game that also uses a lot of CPU.

I think you should go w/ the Surface Book for power if you want it all in one device you can carry around. Otherwise trade off and buy a prebuilt desktop and a cheap model since you said you're not tech sound.

Can the Surface... Clipboard (they can't keep calling it that) be recharged on its own? 3 hour battery life is not necessarily a dealbreaker, it's what my laptop gets atm, but I was thinking that the Book would be absolutely perfect for me at school. Leave the heavy bottom at home for gaming, use the top during the day for note taking.

So, not trying to be a pessimist or too cynical... but I'm struggling to understand the point of making the Book a different product than the Pro 4.

Why not have the Pro 4 have two keyboard docks: the keyboard cover, and then the rigid metal keyboard that comes with the Book?

My friend - who is a MASSIVE MS guy and owns all these Lumias, the Band, and had the Surface the day it came out - agrees with me. For a product that "doesn't compromise," the Surface Book somehow has more compromises by being a second product than if it were just the Pro 4 with a metal keyboard dock/cover.

You could have a smaller tablet when in tablet mode, with more battery, and a kickstand. It would also temper consumer confusion.

Massive gpu computing force(if its like a gtx960m) that comes with the keyboard, for the
rest i need to wait for reviews. One of the more important aspect for me is the typing experience.

Yeah, but couldn't they theoretically have the dGPU in the dock even if it were a Surface Pro 4 with slight modifications? Hell, Sony did it... what... half a decade ago?

Have you seen how many surface products are on the market... the average consumer couldn't tell you the difference from one tot he next.

There are only 3. Surface, Surface Pro and Surface Book.
Cheaper, expensive, more expensive
I dont find this confusing at all.

HOLY SHIT! THE EVENT WAS AMAZING! THE SP4, THE SURFACE BOOK, THE NEW BAND, HOLOLENSE, AND THE NEW PHONES!!!! HELL YES, MY BODY IS READY!!!

So you saying there should be 1 surface that starts from 900 and goes all the way to 3k? lol

Surface Pro and Surface Book makes much much more sense.

But is your wallet ready?

Surface 2 pro 2 surface 3 pro 3 pro 4 surface book... if you asked the average consumer what's the difference they would obviously by numbering tell you one is an upgrade. Thought what that upgrade entails the difference in products they wouldn't know.

huh? They dont even sell those. Its all 3 and 4. By Jan, even 3 will be gone with fire sale and stuff.

At the end it will be Surface 3, Surface Pro 4, Surface Book.

I watched the video more closely, when he says 2x faster than the MBP, he says "by adding the two extra processors". What could that mean? Is he counting the G5 and just giving a Gflop total? That's lame if it is. I guess that idea makes sense as the CPU alone is certainly not 2x faster.

Amazon, ebay? The average consumer that just heard of a surface and wants to buy one. They could easily be confused by the amount of products out there with a "surface" name attached to it.

lol by thos logic what about 10 iPhone model, countless iPad models, different variants of Galaxy devices?

In the stores and on their site you will find the latest.

Maybe the CPU is a quad core. All the 13" MacBook Pros are only dual core.

In that form factor it's very likely using the U series 15W processors, which are all dual cores. If it's fitting a 35-45W quad in there...Well, I want to see the thermal test results!

Will the base model of the surface book cover the needs? Or is it like get the dgpu?

Spend $1899-2099 for Surface Book or get a nice desktop and tablet that can run NBA and Fifa for the around same price. This way you can run the games well and pick up where you left off when you want to kill some time on the go. That's how I would roll if I were you.

I'm kinda disappointed by the pricing of the i5 surface pro 4s. The price jumps are pretty extreme, particularly between the 4GB ($999) and 8GB ($1299). 8GB to 16GB isn't that much better. I'd like the 8GB model for a bit of future proofing and piece of mind, but as of right now I don't think I could justify an extra 4GB for $300 considering what my wife and I will be mostly using this for.

You're talking about the pro 4. Not on the book, as far as I can see. The product page specifically says 520.

Where are you seeing that?

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store...26660400?icid=en_CA_SurfaceBk_cat_modG_100615

For the i7 model they only say Nvidia GPU, but there has to be on board graphics as well.

Peter Bright from Ars Technica said Iris on the i7 Book.

Anyways, waiting for more light to be shed on the whole specs confusion. This is the worst part about Apple to emulate, Microsoft.

Because they list it on the SP4 but not on the SB, I inferred that it was still the 520. If it has an Iris, I don't see why they wouldn't advertise that as well.

You said "The product page specifically says 520", so I thought I was missing something. But it also doesn't say any integrated graphics at all for the i7 model. They only list the Geforce GPU for the upgraded models. Since unlike the Surface Pro 4, every upgraded i7 model also comes with the dedicated graphics keyboard. I think that's just part of their dubious specs "simplification" thing going on now.

If the SP4 has the Iris it would be using a higher end i7 then the Book, which is dubious.

Not necessarily. In the other thread, someone pointed out that the i7 in the SB could be this, which is 25W and quad core: http://ark.intel.com/products/90615/Intel-Core-i7-6822EQ-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-2_80-GHz

You'd give up faster integrated graphics but gain greater cpu performance.

...Ew.

It also only has a single position stand when everyone else has either adjustable friction stands or at least 3 position stands now.

The iPad Pro really seems rushed and not thought out enough. And where is the PEN STORAGE?

There's a lot of other stuff that's different about the Book that would make this not work as well.

The Book doesn't have a USB port so it lets it be thinner. It also is lighter since there isn't as big of a battery in it. So it only lasts ~3 hours.

There's also no kickstand. I love using the kickstand on my SP3 even without the keyboard attached - just propping it up on the desk, over my knees, its. With the Book you need to use the keyboard for that kind of thing.

They're just two very different devices architected in completely different ways. I think the split makes sense.

Right here:

The whole implementation of this thing honestly looks awful. I'm typing this from a rMPB 15", but the whole iPad Pro presentation just made me think "Where the hell did Apples attention to detail go?".

Then MS comes in and nails it with the SP4/SB...But then actually prices things ABOVE Apple.

I DON'T KNOW WHICH COMPANY IS WHICH ANYMORE!!

This is why competition is great and it's good that Ballmer is gone. Apple have gotten horribly complacent and as a big Mac fan (for want of a better word) I hope this jolts them into action. Making a big iPad and slapping on an optional keyboard cover and a stylus is lazy and unimaginative.

Sadly Apple are making money hand over fist so the incentive isn't there to innovate anymore in hardware and iOS is as limited as ever. Hungry and embattled Apple were great just like hungry and embattled Microsoft are great now.

Probably buried in the unmarked grave where they buried the guy that said no one wanted to use a stylus on a touch screen.
