Microsoft has announced job cuts at Xbox Division

Btw the mods over at the Xbox reddit are removing this news whenever it's posted. Absolute clown shit of the highest level.

Yeah, but the success of the game isn't the point. The question is why does a mobile developer have 2,000 employees? If you look at the list of games made by King, most of them are discontinued. They have 11 active games, most of which are older titles.
Content pipeline is different for live service games and require much more people (as content turnaround is much faster) and infrastructure team is big, very big for these games - on a scale of King it probably ten thousand or more servers. Also lots of people works on R&D and future games prototypes (90% of those never see the light).
It's 1000-2000 people for bigger games, like Mihoyo (5000+ for 3.5 games) and Riot (4000+ for 2 games), so having 2000 for 11 smaller games seems reasonable.

Isn't the Xbox subreddit run by actual Microsoft people? I think they closed down the SeriesX subreddit and tried to move everyone to the Xbox one but most people just…didn't.

They moved everyone over into one sub and the excuse was that it made things 'easier'. Their was a ton of backlash over it at the time and yet they ignored everyone did it anyway. It feels like they did it so they could control narratives.

I think the Xbox strategy was executed pretty well. Sometimes the market decides, not someone's competence. I think the Series hardware is fantastic, but if no one is going to buy it, they can't sustain the hardware staff.

When you are getting clear and obvious signals (to add, over long periods of time) from the market that it doesn't want something to the degree that you need them to want it in order to ensure the sustainability and success of your business model, but you decide to continue (and continue to do the same things) regardless then yes, it does come down to your incompetence as a business owner when it fails.

But this is what happens when you envelop yourself in hubris, surround yourself with yes-men and manipulate your remaining fanbase in to being nothing more than an obedient cult. If you get rid of any avenues for negative feedback to enter your sphere of consciousness then it doesn't exist right?

But King had 2000 employees? Doing... what?
The fact that they only cut 200 means important work that's keeping one of the biggest games around going.

You have to be a massive asshole to even mention how amazing you are doing in an email where you're announcing layoffs. And it's not even actual useful metrics either, just bullshit about player hours etc.
Part of these emails is to convince everyone not laid off that things are fine and not to panic.

"The room's on fire, but don't worry. We had a fire extinguisher rep in here last week"

They announced 6k job cuts at the end of 2024 right? So this makes 15k? That's crazy even for a company as large as Microsoft. All while profits are up around 13%, doesn't seem right.

What's mental is that

- in June 2020 MS had around 163k employees

- by December 2024 that was up to 228k employees.

-Since December to now it went up to around 237k.

-And now they are letting go of 9k.

In short, the tech industry is a dynamic where both a lot of hiring is done, and a lot of sudden dismissal is also happening. The latter, of course, is more shocking and draws more attention due to its human drama nature and immediacy.

Gamepass was a success for them and probably one of the only things that kept them in this gen as long as they were. Series S is another. PC is another. That's what they're moving towards. What they're doing today is not ignoring the market.

Hardware has never looked stronger? Huh?

Also, "we will end or decrease work in certain areas of the business" does that unfortunately mean studio closures?

Actually seems like a big layoff. Wonder how long it will take to get the complete picture

Very likely does mean studio closures. If I were to take a guess, it'll be Compulsion and inXile. The former spent 8 years to put out a mid game which performed poorly in sales and got little engagement. The latter's been stalled out for years on a game last seen in 2020, and by all accounts is likely cancelled. Neither studio really offers any technical strengths that could benefit other studios, so easy to cut them.

Ones who could be cut but I'm willing to venture will just be "moderately or heavily" gutted are: Turn 10, Halo Studios, Ninja Theory. Forza Motorsport's a redundant franchise for MS now but team members there can still contribute to Playground for the Horizon games. Halo Studios has already cut back some but I'm sure there are some other redundancies who can be let go. And Ninja Theory, quite frankly they just don't seem capable of making much of a genuine game; they're great at tech demos tho and have some strong technical skills that can be helpful with other studios, so I can't see them getting shut down. We just might not see a new actual game from them for a long time (if ever), and if we do, it'll be partnered with some 3P studio with a stronger track record.

Studio closures/layoffs-wise those would be my guesses. Although King already laid off 10% of their people, and that wasn't on my bingo card. So, we could certainly see some light layoffs from iD, Bethesda, Rare, Coalition etc. But probably nothing significant from those studios.

More curious about the hardware-related layoffs as that will tell a pretty telling picture as to how MS handle hardware manufacturing & distribution going forward.

Let's respectully agree to disagree, because of all the words that come to my mind, 'pretty' and 'well' are absolutely not the ones Id choose to describe MS gaming strategy :-D

The 2020 version of Phil Spencer wouldn't believe what his 2025 alternate ego is planning to do.

Well I don't say that expecting to have a ton of fans on here, because all people see is the negatives. But the hardware is good, the games are good and they grew their portfolio of studios massively, the services are better, the gaming shows are better. The market just isn't there. I think the management they have is still critical for positioning them on PC. If anyone is going to be nerdy enough to even slightly see what Valve does well and broadly steer the store in the right direction, it would be Phil, not some new MBA that doesn't know anything about gaming.

For Jim Ryan, I saw horrible decisions but market success. I hated Jim Ryan.
For Phil Spencer, I saw great decisions but market failure. I liked Phil Spencer.

Agree to disagree.

Phil Spencer has two balls. You don't have to fight with anyone to suck his balls. You and adamsapple adamsapple can have one each.

This has been up for an hour, you don't need to make stuff up, lol.

Why do fans do this? What's the point of acting like reality doesn't exist?

It's there, Sebastian1295 Sebastian1295 needs glasses.

NOBODY'S safe over there now. Nobody!

Also RIP Everwild; had a feeling that'd be gutted. Waiting to hear State of Decay 3's cancellation next.

I don't think it'll be InXile. They JUST dropped that cool Clockwork trailer like two weeks ago. Ninja Theory is a more likely one I think

Oh I didn't know that was their game. They might be safe then, but I'm still expecting SOD3 to get cancelled at this rate (if it hasn't already).

It'd be a bit sad to see Ninja Theory get axed, as they have a lot of technical proficiency with character animations and whatnot. But I am expecting heavy layoffs there and the studio probably being reformed into a support studio.

I will admit I do hate how all the media ONLY talks about the tech industry firing people, but never when they hire a bunch of folks. It feels like we are being manipulated.

They just showed State of decay so I think they are safe. Everwild I don't remember seeing anything after the announcement.

It says the post is deleted man.
It's up for me.

You just can't believe whatever Phil Spencer says.

Speaking in a new interview with the Xbox Era podcast, Spencer claimed that the historic British studio was making progress on the game, and named it among his most anticipated projects currently being worked on at Xbox.

Asked to name the in-development games he's most looking forward to, Spencer answered: "I'll go back to what I said earlier. Yeah, State of Decay is just one of the franchises I love back from the original one, so that one stays on the board.

"I do think the work that Double Fine's doing and how Tim kind of solicits feedback from the team. And the other one, I'll say because I was recently out at Rare. It's nice to see the team with Everwild and the progress that they're making."

He continued in the Xbox Era interview: "It has been [a while]. And we've been able to give those teams time in what they're doing which is good and still have a portfolio like we have. It's like a dream that Matt (Booty) and I have had for a long time, so it's finally good to be there. We can give those teams time"

---------

"We can give those teams time" .... in the case of the Rare devs working on Everwild that was four and a half months.
