Microsoft has announced job cuts at Xbox Division

The COD tax strikes again, but this time in conjuction with constant strategy shifting(thanks to stupid leadership) and other big investments.
Like I keep saying, that amount of money won't simply appears in the pockets.

Come on, some actual facts please. I guess this response means we don't know yet. That's fine. I hope the folks land on their feet.
It's a shame that people eager to see Studios shut down are so eager to embrace any rumor or speculation as fact.

But Yes, we dont Know yet....in 2 or 3 hours all will be clear.

So a quick run down so far we found out King had 2000 people working on mainly Candy Crush and they lost around 10% of their work force

Rare got Everwild canceled that had been worked on for a decade and we havent seen anything from that game in what years?

Perfect Dark rumored to be dead which game looked like it had some promise but looked rather uninspired to me

Also Blizzard Q&A people were told to work from home today while they await their fate and isn't there a thread here making fun of how horrible a WoW cutscene was

So far is this a huge loss to us the gamers?

Horrible news. Just an anecdote from my experience working at Activision in the early 2000's (and this is in no way trying to defend massive layoffs or anything), sometimes we would go weeks without a new build to test, but we would still come in on our scheduled days and pretty much just play Mario Kart, Soul Calibur 2, pool, go to the El Torito and drink all on the clock etc. And yes this was allowed. Teams weren't nearly as big back then as they are today though, but there is a lot of bloat in this industry and very poor project management. This shouldn't come as surprise to anyone at this point. We had a lot of down time on projects and going even a few days without a new build was pretty typical.

Every situation is different for sure, and again, I'm just speaking from my experience. I don't know what the roles are of the people that got laid off, but there is also a lot of nepotism in this industry as well, so it could have been valuable people but they just weren't connected with the right people.

Also Zenimax Online's unannounced MMO that was in development since 2018

Luckily the acquisition helped them. The opposite of what everyone said. We don't know yet if thats it but those are all fairly logical for a business seeing a big downturn. Imagine if they didn't have the Call of Duty money. The acquisition is funding the restructuring not the other way around.

But yeah, we'll see what else drops. Fingers crossed I guess.

I'd use stronger words than "sloppy" and "chaotic" for treating people like that. Abysmal and inhuman come to mind.
Such a disgusting tweet. Firing 9000 people for no good reason isn't the problem. The real issue is doing it in a sloppy way. Media always trying to sanitize all of the abhorrent actions from MS.

i think gamers will be fine with ot without Xbox as a whole.... the real question is:

Is this a huge loss for Xbox/MS gaming? 🤷🏼‍♂️
Killing a few games that were destined to be complete disasters?

The bigger issue is how much money was invested into games like Everwild, a 10 year project

It sounds like the hardware people are mostly safe which is surprising looking at sales figures

Kojima's OD as well? Wow.

Cool though. Meaning he will be able to start Death Stranding 3 sooner!
Haven't played DS2 yet, but I hope not. He might have a maximum of three major games, counting Physint, left in him -- a third Death Stranding would be a waste.

The hypothetical cancellation of OD should pave the way instead for him to want to satiate his desire to make a horror game through the Silent Hills revival that Sony pitched to him right after the first Death Stranding, with PS Studios taking over publishing duties from Konami, who'd simply license the IP and take their cut. That is what should've happened from the very beginning, if The Man Himself had just been able to swallow his pride for a minute.

With H-1B's. That's how Microsoft works. Fire 5000 people. Replace them with 7500 H-1B hires.

I don't think it's fair to attack H-1B workers at a moment like this.

💀 Phil Spencer a few months ago....

See! This is why Sony doesn't allow their Executives go on podcasts or even speak publicly. They are frightened to death that they will say something is dumb as this guy.

Wait, is this the same Microsoft that just applied for over 6,000 H1B visas?

Not the big reduction in headcount that it seems, more like ethnic cleansing. I know when I worked for big household name industrial giant, once you get certain people into a hiring role, they will do everything in their power to hire their ethnic brethren. If you work in engineering you know exactly who I'm talking about. Basically run Microsoft now.

I agree, but regarding the new hardware, I'm afraid the damage might be worse. I really hope not.
